During the past decade, the major fears of transfusion medicine were blood-transmitted viral diseases (hepatitis, AIDS). By applying strict rules at each step of blood donation, it can now be considered that this risk is reduced to a minimal level. Furthermore, new technologies (leukocyte removal filters, cytapheresis devices) and strict immuno-hematological procedures (detection of preformed antibodies, use of blood with well-defined phenotype) will reduce morbidity due to immunological incompatibility. These techniques should provide a safe transfusion service in the near future.

Babesiosis is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia that are transmitted most commonly by Ixodes ticks, and rarely from blood transfusion or congenitally. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 83 patients (84.34 % male, mean age 49.66 years (16.23 years)) who underwent a total of 104 erythrocytapheresis sessions between September 2021 and April 2025. 191 combined collections of granulocytes (PMN) and platelets (PLT) obtained by discontinuous cytapheresis were given to 23 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). The circulation in recipients of the concomitantly transfused cells was compared by measuring the % recovery of PMN at 1 h, and of PLT at 1 and 20 h.
