Decision Trees for the Recognition of Metal-Centered Chirality in Coordination Complexes.

While established guidelines exist for chirality in tetrahedral molecules, there is a notable absence of clear rules for recognizing metal-centered chirality in higher-coordination complexes. We develop decision trees to assess the likelihood of chirality-at-metal in coordination complexes with coordination numbers 4-9 with mono and bidentate ligands. Using binary decision rules based on shape, ligand type, and quantity, the trees classify complexes as chiral or achiral. The theoretical formalism employs stereoisomer enumeration via Pólya's theorem, assuming ideal geometries and cis coordinati

[Comparison of Discriminant Analysis and Decision Trees for the Detection of Subclinical Keratoconus].

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic keratectasia is one of the most dreaded complications of refractive surgery. In most cases, keratectasia develops after refractive surgery of eyes suffering from subclinical stages of keratoconus with few or no signs. Unfortunately, there has been no reliable procedure for the early detection of keratoconus. In this study, we used binary decision trees (recursive partitioning) to assess their suitability for discrimination between normal eyes and eyes with subclinical keratoconus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The method of decision tree analysis was compared with discriminant

Integrating functional knowledge during sample clustering for microarray data using unsupervised decision trees.

Clustering of microarray gene expression data is performed routinely, for genes as well as for samples. Clustering of genes can exhibit functional relationships between genes; clustering of samples on the other hand is important for finding e.g. disease subtypes, relevant patient groups for stratification or related treatments. Usually this is done by first filtering the genes for high-variance under the assumption that they carry most of the information needed for separating different sample groups. If this assumption is violated, important groupings in the data might be lost. Furthermore, cl

Escitalopram treatment for patients with major depressive disorder: decision trees for treatment algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Current treatment algorithms for major depressive disorder (MDD) lack dynamic prediction capabilities, leading to delayed therapeutic adjustments. This study sought to develop escitalopram-specific decision tree models to identify critical treatment adjustment time points and optimize personalized treatment strategies for MDD. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from two multicenter studies in China (2015-2020), we analyzed 800 patients with MDD receiving escitalopram monotherapy. Decision tree models incorporated baseline characteristics (age, BMI, disease duration, depressive sympt

Medical management or surgery for acute cholecystitis: Enhancing treatment selection with decision trees.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to create an algorithm using the decision tree method to classify patients with suspected acute cholecystitis into those who may improve with medical treatment, those who should undergo surgery for acute cholecystitis, and those with complicated cholecystitis, using laboratory parameters alone. METHODS: A total of 1,352 patients treated for acute cholecystitis at our hospital over four years were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into groups based on whether they received medical treatment or surgery. Various demographic and laboratory parameters wer

Forecasting Postoperative Delirium in Older Adult Patients with Fast-and-Frugal Decision Trees.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is associated with increased complication and mortality rates, particularly among older adult patients. However, guideline recommendations for POD detection and management are poorly implemented. Fast-and-frugal trees (FFTrees), which are simple prediction algorithms, may be useful in this context. We compared the capacity of simple FFTrees with two more complex models-namely, unconstrained classification trees (UDTs) and logistic regression (LogReg)-for the prediction of POD among older surgical patients in the perioperative setting. Models were trained and tested

Binary Decision Trees for Preoperative Periapical Cyst Screening Using Cone-beam Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) analysis allows for 3-dimensional assessment of periradicular lesions and may facilitate preoperative periapical cyst screening. The purpose of this study was to develop and assess the predictive validity of a cyst screening method based on CBCT volumetric analysis alone or combined with designated radiologic criteria. METHODS: Three independent examiners evaluated 118 presurgical CBCT scans from cases that underwent apicoectomies and had an accompanying gold standard histopathological diagnosis of either a cyst or granuloma. Lesion volume,

Decision Tree for Reconstructive Treatment of Peri-implantitis Defects.

Peri-implantitis is a common complication among patients receiving implant-supported restorative therapy, and it often requires surgical intervention for effective treatment. Understanding the specific configuration of the peri-implant bony defect and adjacent bone peaks is crucial for tailoring treatment strategies and improving outcomes. A decision tree for reconstructive peri-implantitis therapy has been developed based on the new classification of defect configurations (Classes I to V), guiding clinicians in selecting treatment options, including biomaterials, techniques, and healing appro

Cholecystectomy for asymptomatic gallstones: Markov decision tree analysis.

Gallstones are a common public health problem, especially in developed countries. There are an increasing number of patients who are diagnosed with gallstones due to increasing awareness and liberal use of imaging, with 22.6%-80% of gallstone patients being asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Despite being asymptomatic, this group of patients are still at life-long risk of developing symptoms and complications such as acute cholangitis and acute biliary pancreatitis. Hence, while early prophylactic cholecystectomy may have some benefits in selected groups of patients, the current standard p

Cervical tuberculosis: a decision tree for protecting healthcare workers.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The clinical presentation of cervical tuberculosis (TB) is a unique challenge to the otolaryngologist. To minimize the risk of nosocomial transmission, otolaryngologists must suspect the diagnosis and be familiar with recommendations for TB prevention. STUDY DESIGN: Scientific review. METHODS: We review current literature and recent changes in TB prevention strategies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "Guidelines for Preventing the Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Health-Care Settings, 2005." RESULTS: Nosocomial transmission may occ

[Construction of a decision tree for preoperative diagnosis in urinary incontinence].

In order to analyse the decisions used in non-urodynamic preoperative diagnosis of female urinary incontinence we constructed a decision tree, consisting of decision nodes and probability nodes. Each branch of the decision tree leads to an end point (terminal node), to which an utility must be assigned. We describe the different steps in the construction of the decision tree: 1. listing of all possible decisions (questionnaire, clinical stress test, both, no preoperative tests), 2. assignment of probabilities to the different events (e.g. cure, failure, operation in the absence of genuine stre

[A decision tree for treatment of patients with gingival Stillman's cleft].

Gingival Stillman's cleft is a mucogingival triangular- shaped defect which influence on health and appearance of gingiva. Due to a lack of clinical reports, five cases of gingival Stillman's cleft were recruited in the present study. The treatment methods were selected according to the etiological factors of the defect in each patient. Satisfactory treatment responses were achieved in all cases during a 6 to 20 month follow up after the treatments. In this study, we summarized the treatment strategies in various types of gingival Stillman's cleft, so as to provide the reference for clinicians

Tuberculosis transmission in nontraditional settings: a decision-tree approach.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) transmission in nontraditional settings and relationships (non-TSR) often eludes detection by conventional contact investigation and is increasingly common. The U.S.-based National Tuberculosis Genotyping and Surveillance Network collected epidemiologic data and genotyping results of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from 1996 to 2000. METHODS: In 2003-2004, we determined the number and characteristics of TB patients in non-TSR that were involved in recent transmission, generated a decision tree to profile those patients, and performed a case-control study to i

Using decision tree induction to model oculomotor data.

Decision tree induction is a machine learning method used to generate classification models from data sets. Numerous decision trees were constructed to examine relationships between oculomotor test parameters and lesion sites in a data set containing cases with operated cerebello-pontine angle tumour, operated hemangioblastoma, infarction of cerebello-brainstem and Ménière's disease, and control subjects. The aim was to find useful parameter combinations with discriminatory power. Decision trees constructed using both pursuit eye movements and saccadic eye movements yielded the best classifica

Evaluating training data suitability for decision tree induction.

Decision tree induction, as well as other inductive learning methods, requires training data of high quality to be able to generate accurate and reliable classification models. Example cases should form a representative sample from the application area, and the attributes used to describe example cases should be relevant and adequate for the classification task to be solved. In this paper, measures of the strength of association and an entropy-based approach have been used to assess the quality of the training data. Studied classification tasks related to three otological data sets: a conscrip
