Defecography is a radiographic study that demonstrates the physiological process involved when the rectum evacuates. Fluoroscopy, video recording and spot films are used to record the sequence of events that occur during defecation. Proper radiographic techniques and procedures must be used to demonstrate pathological conditions such as rectoceles, rectal intussusception and prolapse of the rectum.

Defecography is a useful paraclinical examination to explore disturbances of continence or defecation. The purpose of this study was to present a simplified defecography technique and assess its validity in subjects without defecation problems (n = 10) and in patients complaining of idiopathic chronic constipation (n = 35). The anorectal angle at rest (RAA) and when straining at stool was not significantly different in constipated patients and in controls. Defecography often gave abnormal results. Anterior rectocele was found in almost 50 percent (17/35) of constipated patients and in 20 perce

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Conventional defecography and MRI defecography can be requested as an additional test for diagnosing and differentiating the type of posterior compartment prolapse and/or obstructive defecation disorders. The objective of this study was to determine the added value of conventional defecography, conventional defecography and MRI defecography for clinical decision-making on treatment for patients with posterior compartment prolapse.
METHODS: Four gynecologists were asked to fill in their treatment plan per patient for 32 cases for three different steps. Step 1 consi

INTRODUCTION: Proctalgia is a chronic anal pain in the absence of any organic conditions of the anorectum and excluding such morphofunctional disorders as rectal prolapse, intussusception and solitary rectal ulcer, which are easily shown with defecography but not with other imaging techniques. Proctalgia patients undergo a long workup and many instrumental and radiologic examinations and are finally referred to the proctologist with a condition which is difficult to diagnose and treat. We investigated the defecographic findings and anorectal abnormalities of essential proctalgia, as well as th

Video defecography is a dynamic investigation which can influence surgical decision making in constipated patients. A study was therefore undertaken to assess the inter and intraobserver variability in video defecography. Specifically, we sought to assess the interpretation of video defecographies by a group of observers with the same training, guidelines and standards. To determine interobserver variation, four independent observers, two blinded to the patient's history, reviewed 100 randomly sequenced video defecographies performed in constipated patients. The presence or absence of sigmoido

The puborectalis syndrome is a defecation disorder supported by the nonrelaxation of puborectalis sling with consequent dyschezia. We report on a series of 98 patients submitted to clinical examination, defecography, anorectal manometry, electromyography and intestinal transit time studies. Puborectalis anatomy and physiology are briefly reviewed. The main symptoms of puborectalis syndrome in our patients were incomplete defecation (89%) and intermittent evacuation (63%); 28% of patients turned to finger defecation. In all patients, defecography showed an abnormal increase in puborectalis impr

PURPOSE: This study was designed to analyze the frequency of different findings at defecography in patients with defecation disorders and see in what way the evaluation could be improved.
METHODS: The reports of investigations in 2,816 patients were analyzed.
RESULTS: Twenty-three percent of the investigations were considered normal. Thirty-one percent of the patients had rectal intussusception, 13 percent had rectal prolapse, 27 percent had rectocele, and 19 percent had enterocele. Twenty-one percent of the patients had a combination of two or three of these diagnoses. The combination of re

Forty seven healthy young volunteers underwent defecographic examination to determine the range of normal findings. Normality was shown to encompass radiological features often considered pathological. These features included broad ranges of anorectal angle and pelvic floor descent which overlap with reported pathological states. Furthermore, the formation of rectocoeles during defecation was a very common finding in women. Finally, a subgroup of the volunteers had marginal anorectal function. The marginal anorectal function and certain radiological findings such as rectocoeles or intussuscept

OBJECTIVE: To determine the interest of defecography for the initial evaluation of genital prolapses.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 125 patients who had undergone systematically a defecography for the initial evaluation of a genital prolapse.
RESULTS: 10% of defecogaphies were normal. On clinical examination a rectocele was found in 94% of patients and an enterocele in 33%. At defecography, these abnormalities were seen only in 39% and 15% respectively. 39% of patients with radiological rectocele had an intussusception at defecography.
CONCLUSION: Defecography is appropriat

BACKGROUND: Defecography is considered to be an essential investigation in the evaluation of functional anorectal disorders, but the agreement between observers from different clinical centers has never been evaluated.
METHODS: 14 defecographic studies were selected aimed to cover the most relevant defecographic findings responsible for disordered defecation. Eight studies were considered unequivocal, but six were thought to be controversial. All were sent to the ten participants in Europe and the US (five proctosurgeons, three radiologists, two gastroenterologists). They evaluated the studie

PURPOSE: Radiographic imaging of dynamic changes within the pelvic cavity and rectum during evacuation has been recognized as a valuable method of assessment. This study was designed to assess the incidence and clinical significance of defecographic findings in patients with possible evacuation disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All defecographic studies were reviewed by a single colorectal surgeon familiar with patients' histories and physical findings.
RESULTS: Between July 1988 and July 1995, 744 patients (566 females and 178 males) with a mean age of 63.5 (range, 12-95) years had defecogr

UNLABELLED: A number of physiologic and radiologic investigations are used in investigating defecation disorders. Defecography is one important part of these investigations. However, a correct diagnosis of an enterocele is sometimes difficult despite use of contrast media in the rectum, vagina, and small bowel.
PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to ascertain if it was technically possible to perform simultaneous defecography and peritoneography in an effort to improve the diagnostic possibilities in patients with defecation disorders.
METHODS: Twelve patients with defecation disorders and an

Dyssynergic defecation (DD) is defined as paradoxical contraction or inadequate relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles during defecation, which causes functional constipation. Along with the anal manometry and balloon expulsion tests, magnetic resonance (MR) defecography is widely used to diagnose or rule out pelvic dyssynergia. Besides the functional abnormality, structural pathologies like rectocele, rectal intussusception, or rectal prolapse accompanying DD can also be well demonstrated by MR defecography. This examination can be an uncomfortable experience for the patient, so the imaging m

IMPORTANCE: There is a lack of consensus regarding the clinical applicability of fluoroscopic defecography in evaluation of pelvic organ prolapse.
OBJECTIVES: The aim was to evaluate the association between rectocele on defecography and posterior vaginal wall prolapse (PVWP) on physical examination. The secondary objective was to describe radiologic and clinical predictors of surgical intervention and outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective review of patients enrolled in a large health maintenance organization who underwent defecography and were examined by a urogynecologist within

The contribution of evacuation proctography (EP) to the evaluation of pelvic prolapse was assessed in 74 consecutive patients. A rectocele was demonstrated in 73 patients (99%); large rectoceles frequently showed barium trapping, but there was no correlation between these findings and rectal symptoms. An enterocele was detected at evacuation proctography in 13 patients (18%) (including two enteroceles seen only retrospectively), and a sigmoidocele was shown in four patients (5%). Physical examination resulted in detection of only seven enteroceles and of none of the sigmoidoceles. In 48 patien
