The feedsideward of cephalo-adrenal immune interactions.

The feedsideward phenomenon is the interaction of three or more rhythmic physiological entities by a diversified spectrum of rhythms that constitute a rhythmic network. These rhythmic units are: a) the modulator, b) the actor, c) the reactor and d) the integrative unity. Rhythmic interactions are characterized by an alternating sequence of algorithmically predictable effects of attenuation, no effect, and stimulation occurring in different frequencies. The basis of this phenomenon was determined from experimental evidence derived from cephalo-adrenal ex vivo studies. Internal phase-shift studi

Apneic seizures in the newborn.

Electroclinical features of convulsive apnea and its relation to the behavioral state were described on the basis of polygraphic recordings from 21 newborns with various underlying disorders, including perinatal anoxia, purulent meningitis, and intracranial bleeding. The most frequent ictal discharges were rhythmic alpha waves, but other types of discharges, such as repeated sharp waves, rhythmic theta waves, delta waves, and repeated paroxysmal wave complexes, were also frequently seen. The area where the ictal discharges initially occurred or were most prominent was the temporal area, sugges

Antiretroviral therapy effects on sources of cortical rhythms in HIV subjects: responders vs. mild responders.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that 5months of combined anti-retroviral therapy (cART) affect cortical sources of resting state cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms in naïve HIV subjects. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting state EEG data were recorded at baseline (i.e. pre-treatment; T0), T1 (after 4weeks of cART), T2 (after 8weeks of cART), and T5 (after 5months of cART) in 38 naïve HIV subjects. EEG data were also recorded in 40 age-matched cognitively normal subjects for control purposes. EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2-4Hz), theta (4-8Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5Hz), alpha 2 (10.5-

Peak oxygen uptake during exercise in mitral stenosis with sinus rhythm or atrial fibrillation: lack of correlation with valve area. A study in 70 patients.

Although the haemodynamic response during submaximal supine exercise in mitral stenosis has been well described, the determinants of peak oxygen uptake during maximal upright exercise are poorly characterized and may differ in sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation. Seventy patients with isolated mitral stenosis underwent Doppler-echocardiography and bicycle exercise with respiratory gas analysis. Forty-two patients were in sinus rhythm (Group I) and 28 in atrial fibrillation (Group II). Peak oxygen uptake was 21.3 +/- 5.6 ml.min-1.kg-1 in group I and 18.1 +/- 5.1 ml.min-1.kg-1 in group II (P <

[Quantitative analysis of EEG basic rhythms in epileptics (author's transl)].

Basic rhythms of EEG were quantitatively analyzed in 92 adult idiopathic epileptic patients and in 57 age-matched control subjects. Epileptic patients have been administered one or both of anticonvulsants, phenobarbital (PB) and diphenyl-hydantoin (DPH). Before the EEG study, blood samples were taken from patients and serum concentration of PB and DPH was examined with UV method. Dose and serum level correlation was statistically significant in both drugs but fairly inferior in DPH. Dominant posterior rhythms in awake subjects were restored in a medical computer. These data were transformed wi

Breach rhythm-induced asymmetric post-arousal hypersynchrony mimicking ictal EEG in coma.

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the risk of misinterpreting stimulation-related EEG patterns as seizures in the ICU, and to illustrate how awakening hypersynchrony and breach rhythm can mimic a focal seizure, leading to an erroneous diagnosis of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). METHOD: A single patient case observation of a 17-year-old male with a severe traumatic brain injury, resulting in a left depressed skull fracture and coma. A continuous EEG was analyzed during repeated auditory/somatosensory stimulations. Pharmacologic reactivity was assessed with IV clonazepam. RESULTS: Several epis

Abnormal electroencephalographic rhythms from quiet wakefulness to light sleep in Alzheimer's disease patients with mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease patients with mild cognitive impairment (ADMCI) show abnormal resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms (8-12 Hz) and may suffer from daytime sleepiness. Our exploratory study tested the hypothesis that they may present characteristic EEG rhythms from quiet wakefulness to light sleep during diurnal recordings. METHODS: Datasets of 34 ADMCI and 22 matched healthy elderly (Nold) subjects were obtained from international archives. EEG recordings lasted approximately 30 min. Transitions of EEG activity from quiet wakefulness (alpha-dom

Does atrial fibrillation in elderly patients with chronic heart failure limit the efficacy of carvedilol? Suggestions from an observational study.

BACKGROUND: No clinical investigation provided any information about a possible influence of atrial fibrillation on the response to beta-blocker therapy in elderly patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The aim of this study was to observe carvedilol effects in a cohort of patients > 70 years of age with CHF due to left ventricular dysfunction and with chronic atrial fibrillation. METHODS: An observational, 12-month prospective clinical and echocardiographic study was carried out on 240 patients > 70 years of age with heart failure due to systolic dysfunction, 64 of whom with atrial fibri

Turner's syndrome: a qualitative and quantitative analysis of EEG background activity.

A qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed on the EEG background activity in 62 Danish girls and women with Turner's syndrome (30 with karyotype 45,X and 32 with other karyotypes) whose ages ranged from 6 to 47 years (87% were aged 15 years or more) and age-matched controls. The pooled data and a case-control study showed characteristic features in Turner subjects, including: (1) more rapid frequency, larger amplitude and lower amount of alpha waves, (2) higher amount of theta waves, (3) larger amplitude and higher amount of delta waves and (4) larger amplitude and higher amount of

Directional information flows between brain hemispheres during presleep wake and early sleep stages.

Neuroscientists' efforts to better understand the underlying processes of human consciousness are growing in a variety of multidisciplinary approaches. Relevant within these are the studies aimed at exploring the physiological substratum of the propagation and reduction of cerebral-namely, corticocortical-communication flows. However, the preferential direction of the information flow between brain hemispheres is as yet largely unknown. It is the aim of the present research to study the communication flows between brain hemispheres, their directionality, and their regional variations across wa

Consciousness among delta waves: a paradox?

A common observation in EEG research is that consciousness vanishes with the appearance of delta (1-4 Hz) waves, particularly when those waves are high amplitude. High amplitude delta oscillations are frequently observed in states of diminished consciousness, including slow wave sleep, anaesthesia, generalized epileptic seizures, and disorders of consciousness, such as coma and the vegetative state. This strong correlation between loss of consciousness and high amplitude delta oscillations is thought to stem from the widespread cortical deactivation that occurs during the 'down states' or trou

Temporal evolution of electroencephalographic abnormalities in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Frequent serial EEG investigations of three patients with neuropathologically confirmed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease lasting 13, 24 and 68 weeks revealed typical periodic activity of short duration with stereotyped bilateral sharp waves at the 7th, 8th, and 12th week, respectively, after the onset of symptoms. During the later stages, there were several deviations from this typical pattern. However, periodic activity was preceded between the 3rd and 9th week by intermittent localized or lateralized delta rhythms, which gradually changed into periodic activity. This early temporal evolution of EEG

Altered brain rhythms and functional network disruptions involved in patients with generalized fixation-off epilepsy.

Generalized Fixation-off Sensitivity (CGE-FoS) patients present abnormal EEG patterns when losing fixation. In the present work, we studied two CGE-FoS epileptic patients with simultaneous EEG-fMRI. We aim to identify brain areas that are specifically related to the pathology by identifying the brain networks that are related to the EEG brain altered rhythms. Three main analyses were performed: EEG standalone, where the voltage fluctuations in delta, alpha, and beta EEG bands were obtained; fMRI standalone, where resting-state fMRI ICA analyses for opened and closed eyes conditions were comput

Separation of circadian and wake duration-dependent modulation of EEG activation during wakefulness.

The separate contribution of circadian rhythmicity and elapsed time awake on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during wakefulness was assessed. Seven men lived in an environmental scheduling facility for 4 weeks and completed fourteen 42.85-h 'days', each consisting of an extended (28.57-h) wake episode and a 14.28-h sleep opportunity. The circadian rhythm of plasma melatonin desynchronized from the 42.85-h day. This allowed quantification of the separate contribution of circadian phase and elapsed time awake to variation in EEG power spectra (1-32 Hz). EEG activity during standardized be

Electroencephalographic quantification by time domain analysis in normal 7--15-year-old children.

Automatic EEG analysis was performed on 239 apparently healthy school age children. The children were classed in 3 age groups: (1) average age of 7; (2) average age of 11; (3) average age of 15. A time analysis method, comparable to classical visual analysis, permitted quantification of the records. The mean amplitude, frequency and percentage time for alpha and theta rhythms were determined for each subject for fronto-central and centro-occipital derivations bilaterally. Records were performed during periods of rest with eyes open and eyes closed. During hyperventilation, records were taken w

Changes in heart rate during obstructive sleep apnoea.

The mechanisms behind the decrease in heart rate during apnoeas in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are little known. Recent findings in animal experiments indicate that stimulation of the upper airway activates postinspiratory and cardiac vagal neurones in the medullary respiratory centre, causing alterations in heart rate and respiratory rhythm. Since OSA leads to a collapse of the airway and consequent stimulation of upper airway receptors, we studied the interrelations between heart rate and respiratory rhythm during apnoea and during negative intrathoracic pressure generated b

Changes in cross-frequency coupling following closed-loop auditory stimulation in non-rapid eye movement sleep.

Regional changes of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep delta and sigma activity, and their temporal coupling have been related to experience-dependent plastic changes during previous wakefulness. These sleep-specific rhythms seem to be important for brain recovery and memory consolidation. Recently, it was demonstrated that by targeting slow waves in a particular region at a specific phase with closed-loop auditory stimulation, it is possible to locally manipulate slow-wave activity and interact with training-induced neuroplastic changes. In our study, we tested whether closed-loop auditory s
