Deportation along the U.S.-Mexico border: its relation to drug use patterns and accessing care.

Since migration has been linked to new drug trends and risky behaviors, and deported individuals face unique economic and social stressors, we investigated behaviors of injection drug users (IDUs) from Tijuana, Mexico in relation to deportation history. In 2005, IDUs > or =18 years old who injected within the prior month were recruited by respondent-driven sampling, administered a questionnaire, and underwent antibody testing for HIV, HCV, and syphilis. Logistic regression compared IDUs who reported coming to Tijuana due to deportation from the U.S. versus others in the study. Of 219 participa

A novel method for a fast diagnosis of septic arthritis using mid infrared and deported spectroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of mid infrared deported spectroscopy to discriminate synovial fluids samples of septic arthritis patients from other causes of joint effusion. METHODS: Synovial fluids obtained from patients with clinically suspected arthritis were collected, analysed and classified according to standard diagnostic procedures as septic or non-septic. A spectroscopic analysis on synovial fluid samples was then performed using a coiled optical fiber made with chalcogenide glass. After a factorial analysis of the normalized spectra and the computation of a Fisher test used to se

Fear of Deportation and Hispanic Early Adolescent Substance Use: a Moderated Mediation Model of Stress and Hope.

Reports of deportation can create a state of chronic fear in children living in mixed-status immigrant families over their own or a loved one's potential deportation. One indicator of health disparities among youth is elevated rates of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use (ATOD). Yet little is known about the effects of fear of deportation (FOD) on ATOD or what might promote resilience. We explore the associations between FOD and ATOD use, how stress mediates this relationship, and whether hope moderates the mediated pathway from FOD to ATOD. Participants were 200 first- and second-generation

Drug prohibition and the criminalization of immigrants: The compounding of drug war disparities in the United States deportation regime.

BACKGROUND: While recent years have seen moderate progress toward more humanistic drug policy in the United States, the well-documented disproportionate incarceration of Black and Latino Americans continues largely unabated, and non-citizens are still frequently detained and deported based on drug-related crimes and violations. These processes draw from a long history of targeted drug enforcement that has served to scapegoat, punish, and exclude immigrants and native-born racial minorities, culminating in a modern War on Drugs intimately intertwined with processes of immigration and deportatio

Psychological homelessness and enculturative stress among US-deported Salvadorans: a preliminary study with a novel approach.

The purpose of this study was to examine the construct psychological homelessness-feelings of not belonging in one's home country-within the context of deported Salvadorans' enculturation to El Salvador. Participants (n = 66) who had been deported from the United States completed a set of questionnaires related to their deportation experience. Results indicated that deportees, in various degrees, experienced the phenomenon of psychological homelessness and enculturative stress related to living in El Salvador. As hypothesized, enculturative stress related to re-adapting to life in El Salvador

Well-being and contexts of development of U.S. citizen children in Mexico following parental deportation or voluntary relocation.

When undocumented immigrant parents are deported from the United States, they must decide whether or not to take their U.S.-born and undocumented immigrant children with them, often to countries the children have never visited or know little about. Other parents do not wait to be deported by the government and decide to relocate to their home countries with or without their children. Both sets of families experience relocation but under different circumstances. These differences deserve exploration to understand the psychological and emotional effects on children's well-being. In this cross-se

Household fear of deportation in Mexican-origin families: Relation to body mass index percentiles and salivary uric acid.

OBJECTIVE: Fear of deportation (FOD) is a prevalent concern among mixed-status families. Yet, our understanding of how FOD shapes human health and development is in its infancy. To begin to address this knowledge gap, we examined the relationship between household FOD, body mass index (BMI) percentiles and salivary uric acid (sUA), a biomarker related to oxidative stress/hypertension/metabolic syndrome, among 111 individuals living in Mexican-origin families. METHODS: Participants were 65 children (2 months-17 years, 49% female) and 46 adults (20-58 years, 71% female) living in 30 Mexican-ori

"Everyone collaborated and came together": The civic promise (and pitfalls) of yPAR for immigrant-origin students in an era of deportation.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, increased anti-immigrant hostility has trickled into school settings creating toxic climates for immigrant-origin (I-O) students (Rogers, School and society in the age of trump, 2019, UCLA's Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access). Through youth participatory action research (yPAR), this study qualitatively examined how a class of Emerging Bilingual (EB) students aimed to promote more inclusive learning environments by designing, implementing, and evaluating a school-wide program. Here, we consider how the students experienced growth in their civic developm

Dental evidence of human remains of a Slavic soldier population deported in concentration camps during World War II.

Aims: The aim of this paper was to analyse post-mortem dental records of a collection of 93 skeletal remains exhumed from the ossuary of Bari Municipal Cemetery, Apulia, Italy. These skeletal remains belonged to Slavic soldiers deported in 1941 during World War II in two Italian concentration camps and who died in 1946-1947. Methods: A total number of 1949 teeth were analysed according to the American Board of Forensic Odontology and the WHO methods. The majority of the victims were men (95%) between the age of 18 and 62. Results: The results showed the dental health situation of a population

Narratives About Deported Migrants Who Served in the U.S. Military Reduce Animosity Toward Migrants in the United States.

Animosity toward immigrants, especially those who are undocumented, has reached high levels in many parts of the United States. What can be done to counteract anti-immigrant hostility? One solution is to implement media interventions, which are uniquely positioned to reduce animosity. We thus conducted two studies to assess the efficacy of three media interventions to reduce anti-immigrant attitudes. In Study 1 (N = 2,050), we conducted an intervention tournament and found that one video was particularly effective at reducing anti-immigrant hostility and support for anti-immigrant policies, es

A qualitative view of drug use behaviors of Mexican male injection drug users deported from the United States.

Deportees are a hidden yet highly vulnerable and numerous population. Significantly, little data exists about the substance use and deportation experiences of Mexicans deported from the United States. This pilot qualitative study describes illicit drug use behaviors among 24 Mexico-born male injection drug users (IDUs), ≥ 18 years old, residing in Tijuana, Mexico who self-identified as deportees from the United States. In-person interviews were conducted in Tijuana, Mexico in 2008. Content analysis of interview transcripts identified major themes in participants' experiences. Few participants

Asylum seekers working in Quebec (Canada) during the COVID-19 pandemic: Risk of deportation, and threats to physical and mental health.

• Asylum seekers experienced childhood adversity, domestic violence, extreme poverty and precariousness, armed violence, rape, and detention. • In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Quebec (Canada), asylum seekers are on the frontlines, risking their lives to save the lives of others. • In addition to the anxiety associated with COVID-19, these asylum seekers are also concerned about being deported. • Regulation measures should be taken to prevent long-term mental health problems related to anxieties and worries generated by both COVID-19 and asylum status, particularly the fear of deportat

Prevalence of mental disorders among detained asylum seekers in deportation arrest in Switzerland and validation of the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen BJMHS.

BACKGROUND: Though slowly growing, knowledge about prisoners detained for having violated an Alien Act is still marginal and most studies involve detained asylum seekers in the USA and Australia. Little is known about prevalence rates of mental health disorders in such a population. The Brief Jail Mental Health Screening BJMHS has been demonstrated in other prison populations as a valid screening for serious mental illness. AIM: The aims of this study were to describe prevalence rates for mental disorders according to ICD-10 and to validate the BJMHS for this population. METHODS: 80 inmates

Concerns about the deportation of friends or family members shape U.S.-born Latines' feelings about U.S. immigration policy with implications for collective action for immigrants' rights.

OBJECTIVES: As citizens by birth, U.S.-born Latines are not subject to deportation. However, many have undocumented friends or family members who are. We examined whether concerns about the deportation of friends or family members shape U.S.-born Latines' feelings of anger and fear about U.S. immigration policy as well as identity conflict, variables associated with collective action for immigrants' rights. METHOD: After establishing the effectiveness of our experimental manipulation in a pilot study (N = 378), we randomly assigned a national sample of U.S.-born Mexican and Central Americans

IFPA Meeting 2012 Workshop Report III: trophoblast deportation, gestational trophoblastic disease, placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction, trophoblast over-invasion and accreta-related pathologies, placental thrombosis and fibrinolysis.

Workshops are an important part of the IFPA annual meeting as they allow for discussion of specialized topics. At IFPA meeting 2012 there were twelve themed workshops, five of which are summarized in this report. These workshops related to various aspects of placental biology but collectively covered areas of clinical research and pregnancy disorders: 1) trophoblast deportation; 2) gestational trophoblastic disease; 3) placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction; 4) trophoblast overinvasion and accreta-related pathologies; 5) placental thrombosis and fibrinolysis.

A Courageous Journey of a Foreign-Born Intensive Care Unit Nurse in Finland: A Narrative Case Study.

Finland is facing a severe shortage of nurses. While uncommon, the deportation of a foreign-born nurse could exacerbate this already critical situation. However, research on the deportation experiences of migrants, particularly healthcare workers such as nurses, remains scarce. This study aimed to provide a descriptive analysis of a deportation case involving a foreign-born intensive care nurse in Finland and examined the implications of this case for nursing education, the healthcare workforce, and government policies. Using a narrative case study approach, publicly available data from variou

Immigration Enforcement and Children's Living Arrangements.

Tougher immigration enforcement was responsible for 1.8 million deportations between 2009 and 2013 alone--many of them were fathers of American children. We exploit the geographic and temporal variation in the escalation of interior immigration enforcement to assess its impact on the structure of families to which many of the deported fathers of U.S.-born children belonged. We find that the average increase in immigration enforcement during the 2005 to 2015 period has raised by 19 percent the likelihood that Hispanic U.S.-born children might live without their parents in households headed by n

Impact of September 11 on refugees and those seeking asylum.

September 11, 2001 profoundly affected the American public. We share the views of a cohort of refugees and those seeking asylum from the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights. Of the 63 individuals from 18 countries interviewed, many had concerns about their personal safety following September 11, as well as fears related to deportation, arrest, detention, imprisonment, discrimination, physical violence and the destruction of property, and war. Asylum seekers were more likely than refugees to have concerns about their safety before their departure and during flight, as well as fear
