Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Biomarkers for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

There has been an increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases with the rapid increase in aging societies worldwide. Biomarkers that can be used to detect pathological changes before the development of severe neuronal loss and consequently facilitate early intervention with disease-modifying therapeutic modalities are therefore urgently needed. Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising tool that can be used to infer microstructural characteristics of the brain, such as microstructural integrity and complexity, as well as axonal density, order, and myelination, through th

Diffusion Tensor Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Clinical Perspective.

Imaging the heart is central to cardiac phenotyping, but in clinical practice, this has been restricted to macroscopic interrogation. Diffusion tensor cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) is a novel, noninvasive technique that is beginning to unlock details of this microstructure in humans in vivo. DT-CMR demonstrates the helical cardiomyocyte arrangement that drives rotation and torsion. Sheetlets (functional units of cardiomyocytes, separated by shear layers) have been shown to reorientate between diastole and systole, revealing how microstructural function facilitates cardiac thickeni

Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Acute Retinal Pathology.

The authors describe diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) as an accessible way to screen for acute retinal pathology in emergency setting. They describe three proof-of-principle patients who had abrupt onset of vision loss from acute retinal pathology where DWI was diagnostic. The deficits included central retinal artery occlusion and acute retinitis with retinal necrosis. DWI can be non-specific for aetiology, but it can rapidly localise the retinal pathology and initiate early therapeutic interventions in the emergency room.

Etiology of perfusion-diffusion magnetic resonance imaging mismatch patterns.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion-and perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI and PWI) are useful tools for the assessment of brain ischemia. Discrepancies between the extent of DWI and PWI abnormalities are thought to depend pre dominantly on time from symptom onset to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. However, underlying ischemic stroke etiology can also be important. A mismatch may indicate the presence of tissue at risk for infarction, whereas the relevance of other DWI/PWI patterns is uncertain. The authors therefore investigated the etiology of brain ischemia in pa

[Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of neuro-Behçet's disease].

We report 2 patients (35-year-old and 38-year-old men) with neuro-Behçet's disease and characterize their diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) findings of brain. T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images obtained during the acute phase of neurological manifestations demonstrated multiple hyperintense lesions with a characteristic distribution in the brain including brainstem, thalamus, basal ganglia, and cerebral hemisphere. Most of these lesions did not exhibit increased signal intensity on DWI. This MRI profile, especially the combination of isointensity on DWI and hyperintensity on

Diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging in childhood stroke.

Two magnetic resonance imaging techniques, diffusion and perfusion imaging, are being used increasingly for evaluation of pathophysiology of stroke. This article introduces these techniques and reports some initial studies using these approaches, together with conventional T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, for investigation of childhood stroke. It is shown that the combination of T2-weighted and diffusion images can provide information about the timing of stroke events in childhood, and perfusion imaging can detect abnormalities not visible by other magnetic resonance imaging techniques.

Imaging focal reperfusion injury following global ischemia with diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) could identify focal lesions that develop in ischemia-sensitive cerebral tissues during reperfusion following global brain ischemia. Localized 1H-Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) measurements were also obtained to determine whether abnormal spectroscopic markers were associated with focal lesions and to define time correlations between DWI and metabolic changes. Brain diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging measurements were made in a cat model of repetitive global cerebral ische

Maple syrup urine disease: diffusion-weighted and diffusion-tensor magnetic resonance imaging findings.

We present conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with diffusion-weighted and diffusion-tensor imaging findings in a 10-day-old neonate with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). On conventional MR imaging, signal abnormalities were noted in the affected white matter of cerebellum, dorsal brainstem, thalami, posterior limbs of internal capsules, and the corona radiata. These regions showed marked hyperintensity on diffusion-weighted images with decreased apparent diffusion coefficient values (average 68% reduction). Diffusion-tensor imaging showed decreased anisotropy (average 57% reduction)

[Magnetic resonance imaging in diffuse brain injury].

Forty cases diagnosed as diffuse brain injury (DBI) were studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed within 3 days after injury. These cases were divided into two groups, which were the concussion group and diffuse axonal injury (DAI) group established by Gennarelli. There were no findings on computerized tomography (CT) in the concussion group except for two cases which had a brain edema or subarachnoid hemorrhage. But on MRI, high intensity areas on T2 weighted imaging were demonstrated in the cerebral white matter in this group. Many lesions in this group were thought to be edemas

Imaging of Ulcerative Colitis: The Role of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a promising and appealing alternative to endoscopy in the objective assessment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a specialized imaging technique that enables the mapping of water molecule diffusion within biological tissues, eliminating the need for intravenous gadolinium contrast injection. It is expanding the capability of traditional MRI sequences in Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Recently, there has been growing interest in the application of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging in the fie

Diffusion-weighted imaging of biliopancreatic disorders: correlation with conventional magnetic resonance imaging.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is a well established method for the evaluation of intracranial diseases, such as acute stroke. DWI for extracranial application is more difficult due to physiological motion artifacts and the heterogeneous composition of the organs. However, thanks to the newer technical development of DWI, DWI has become increasingly used over the past few years in extracranial organs including the abdomen and pelvis. Most previous studies of DWI have been limited to the evaluation of diffuse parenchymal abnormalities and focal lesions in abdominal organs,

Wake-Up Thrombolysis With Negative Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

This case underscores the importance of treating neurological deficits of an acute stroke presentation despite initial negative diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), especially in the acute phase when there is high clinical suspicion of stroke. Additionally, it highlights the appropriate use of a WAKE-UP protocol for patients that present with stroke symptoms without a well-defined inception time. A 71-year-old female presented to the emergency department with symptoms of dizziness and double vision upon wake-up. While clinical exam findings revealed left intranuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) and ina
