BACKGROUND: Motor neurone disease (MND) practice guidelines suggest developing interventions that will promote hope, meaning, and dignity to alleviate psychological distress, but very little research has been done. This study begins to address this need by exploring the use of dignity therapy with people with MND. Dignity therapy is a brief psychotherapy that promotes hope, meaning and dignity, and enhances the end of life for people with advanced cancer. The aims of this study are to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and potential effectiveness of dignity therapy for people with MND.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care focuses not only on physical symptoms, but also addresses the psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the individual. Spiritual care-understood as the search for meaning, purpose, and peace-is often neglected in clinical practice. Dignity therapy is a brief, individualised psychotherapeutic intervention designed to preserve dignity and respond to existential and spiritual needs at the end of life.
AIM: To narratively examine the reported outcomes and feasibility of dignity therapy as a nursing intervention to address spiritual needs in patients receiving

OBJECTIVE: To examine Dignity Therapy (DT) narratives in patients with severe mental illness (SMI) and a control group of cancer patients.
METHODS: 12 patients with SMI (schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, sever personality disorders) and 12 patients with non-advanced cancer individually participated to DT interviews. DT was tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim and shaped into a narrative through a preliminary editing process. A session was dedicated to the final editing process along with the participant, with a final written legacy (generativity document) provided to the participant. Interpret

BACKGROUND: Dignity therapy (DT) has been developed to help reduce distress experienced by people nearing the end of life; however, evaluations of this novel intervention have largely involved non-distressed samples.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore in detail the impact of DT on distressed patients with advanced cancer.
METHODS: We used a case study approach. Three patients with the highest levels of dignity-related distress who received DT were explored in depth. We collected quantitative and qualitative outcomes from patients in face-to-face interviews at baseline and

BACKGROUND: Confronting terminal illness and the prospect of death and dying can severely undermine an individual's sense of identity, meaning and purpose in life, leading to existential suffering, increasing hopelessness, depressive symptoms, and death anxieties.
OBJECTIVES: This study explored how narrative approaches can alleviate existential suffering, promote emotional healing, and consolidate identity for individuals confronted with death and dying. Specifically, the study aimed to (1) analyze dimensions of identity reflected in Dignity Therapy (DT) legacy documents from a randomized co

Decisions regarding health care of the severely mentally retarded can be difficult. We present 2 cases of patients with severe mental retardation who lived in long-term care facilities. Both patients had progressive loss of renal function and eventually reached end-stage renal disease. In each case, the decision was made not to initiate dialysis. We discuss issues of dialysis and medical care of the severely mentally retarded and advocate using the principles of "best respect" and "best interest" in making medical decisions in this population.

OBJECTIVES: Brain tumors are associated with negative changes in sense of self and increased distress early in the illness trajectory. Dignity Therapy (DT) is a brief 2-session therapeutic intervention for patients at end-of-life (EOL) that helps conserve a patient's sense of dignity or self. DT has shown positive results for patients at EOL including increased meaning, improved quality of life (QOL), and reduced distress, with limited research to date on patients early in their illness trajectory (non-EOL). This pre-post design pilot study investigated the benefits and feasibility of DT for 2

With changes in lifestyle and an increase in bad health habits, cancer has become a noncommunicable and frequently occurring disease that poses a serious threat to human life. Cancer is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As a major negative life event, advanced malignancies lead to strong mood swings in most patients. Furthermore, various internal and external factors can have a huge impact on patients' physical and mental health and put them in a stressful situation, causing a series of psychological stress responses. To explore the degree of fear of disease prog

AIM: To report the findings of a study exploring the views and experiences of care home resident's family on Dignity Therapy.
BACKGROUND: As the proportion of older people dying in care homes increases, it is important to enhance their dignity, reduce distress at the end-of-life, and provide bereavement support to their families. Pilot studies show that hospice patients and care home residents feel Dignity Therapy had or would help their families; however, there are no qualitative studies of their views.
DESIGN: Qualitative exploration.
METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted between

PURPOSE: This study assessed the cultural acceptability and clinical effectiveness of dignity therapy (DT) among terminal cancer patients in Taiwan, addressing a significant gap in evidence regarding its applicability in East Asian contexts.
METHODS: A quasiexperimental, nonrandomized controlled design with integrated qualitative feedback analysis was employed. Twenty-four terminal cancer patients were assigned to either an intervention group (DT plus comfort care, n = 12) or a control group (comfort care only, n = 12). Dignity-related distress was measured using the Patient Dignity Inventory

PURPOSE: To explore and summarize the published literature on the most common causes of dropout and the challenges in implementing Dignity Therapy (DT) in terminally ill patients, as well as the training of the professionals involved.
METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted following the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for scoping reviews, using the PAGER framework. The databases consulted included PUBMED, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and SCOPUS. Two independent reviewers applied the established criteria. The PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed for reporting.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced cancer experience significant existential distress, necessitating culturally sensitive interventions to enhance psychological well-being. This study explored a modified form of dignity therapy (mDT) that incorporates a photo-collage intervention to address these needs considering the Korean cultural context, where family relationships fundamentally shape individual identity and coping processes.
METHODS: Thirteen Korean patients with advanced cancer participated in this qualitative study, which involved integrated reflexive thematic analysis of interview tra

BACKGROUND: Dignity therapy has been shown to enhance well-being and preserve a sense of dignity in palliative care. Patients with end-stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis also experience persistent threats to dignity related to treatment dependence and disease burden. Evaluating dignity therapy within a chronic illness context may help clarify its potential applicability beyond terminal care settings.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether dignity therapy improves dignity-related distress, treatment adherence, hope, depressive symptoms, and quality of life among patients with end-stage renal d

BACKGROUND: Dignity therapy is a brief, structured psychotherapeutic intervention originally designed to help last-stage cancer patients maintain their dignity. It consists of a semi-structured interview encouraging patients to talk about their lives. The recorded session are transcribed and edited, after which the patient has the opportunity to make further changes to the final document. It can be shared with whom the patient likes. We cross-culturally translated dignity therapy into Dutch and explored its feasibility of applying it to Dutch cognitively capable nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND: Although most older people living in nursing homes die there, there is a dearth of robust evaluations of interventions to improve their end-of-life care. Residents usually have multiple health problems making them heavily reliant on staff for their care, which can erode their sense of dignity. Dignity Therapy has been developed to help promote dignity and reduce distress. It comprises a recorded interview, which is transcribed, edited then returned to the patient, who can bequeath it to people of their choosing. Piloting has suggested that Dignity Therapy is beneficial to people dy
