The availability and cost of antibiotics for treating PID in the Central Region of Ghana and implications for compliance with national treatment guidelines.

The availability and cost of antibiotics for treating pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) were assessed in 17 drug-dispensing outlets in 5 districts of the Central Region, Ghana. The outlets included the dispensaries of 2 regional and 4 district hospitals, 4 privately-owned pharmacies and 7 chemical seller shops. The most common antibiotics available, including co-trimoxazole, metronidazole, benzylpenicillin, amoxycillin, chloramphenicol and gentamicin, were also the lowest-priced drugs. Conversely, the most expensive antibiotics including ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, cefuroxime and spectinomycin

Over-diagnosis of malaria by microscopy in the Kilombero Valley, Southern Tanzania: an evaluation of the utility and cost-effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests.

BACKGROUND: Early and accurate diagnosis of febrile patients is essential to treat uncomplicated malaria cases properly, prevent severe malaria, and avert unnecessary anti-malarial treatments. Improper use of anti-malarials increases the risk of adverse drug reaction and the evolution of drug/parasite resistance. While microscopy is the most common form of malaria diagnosis, concerns over its accuracy have prompted the incorporation of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) into many national malaria control programmes. METHODS: Over a three-month period, a direct comparison between microscopy

A Study on the Operation and Institutional Character of the Chemulpo Women's Dispensary.

This study examines the establishment and operation of the Chemulpo Women's Dispensary to clarify the patterns and historical character of women's medical work in Incheon during the Japanese colonial period. Previous studies have made only fragmentary references to the fact that the dispensary was founded in 1921 by Rosetta S. Hall, without sufficiently addressing its practical operations or its relationship with the local community. The findings reveal that the Chemulpo Women's Dispensary functioned not merely as an outcome of missionary expansion, but as a regional medical hub that filled a

[Remote results of the surgical treatment of patients with pulmonary aspergillosis].

On the basis of an analysis of long-term results of the operative treatment of 17 patients (from 1 to 10 years) the development of possible complications associated with the aspergillous infection was established: aspergillous mycetoma with a bronchial fistula (in 3 patients), chronic aspergillous bronchopneumonia (in 10 patients), polycystosis of the lungs (in 3 patients). A conclusion is made of a necessary continuous dispensary follow-up of the patients operated upon and their treatment by antifungal drugs.

Treatment of visceral leishmaniasis with sodium stibogluconate in Sudan: management of those who do not respond.

Almost all (98%) of 1593 visceral leishmaniasis (VL) patients treated with sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam; Wellcome) in Sudan between 1989 and 1995 and follow-up responded well to treatment. However, the other 33 patients, all of whom were seronegative for HIV, showed partial or no response. The two main causes of unresponsiveness were primary drug resistance (39.3%) and low drug dosages given at peripheral dispensaries (30.3%). All of those who had been sub-optimal doses were cured when adequate doses of the drug were given. A third cause was concurrent disease, particularly pulmonary tuber

[The influence of the vaccine prophylaxis and chemo-prophylaxis on the incidence of tuberculosis among children during the epidemic outbreak].

The activities of a mass tuberculin diagnosis team improved with a phthisiopediatrician being included as its member. Team members' work quality standards have been developed: age-specific tuberculin sensitivity, the rates of infection with Mycobacteria tuberculosis in children aged 12-14 years were 29.3 +/- 2.9%; the annual risk of primary infection was 2.5 +/- 0.21%; the rate of hyperergy to tuberculin with qualitative drug prevention was 0.09%. This enhances the efficiency of BCG revaccination and drug treatment in Dispensary Registration Group 6 and stabilizes the incidence of tuberculosis

The growing dilemma of legalized cannabis and heart transplantation.

This in-depth review discusses cannabis as it relates to heart transplantation and the growing dilemma of legalization around the world creating disparities in transplant candidacy. One will learn about two of the most common cannabinoids: Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These cannabinoids are metabolized by cytochrome P-450 and P glycoprotein, which are essential for the metabolism of drugs for transplantation, such as calcineurin inhibitors. Addiction, withdrawal, and cannabis use disorder will be reviewed as well as hyperemesis syndrome. Maintaining adequate immunosuppr

[Status of bacteriological services in tuberculosis institutions of the RSFSR and prospects of their improvement].

Organization of the work of bacteriological laboratories in tuberculosis institutions of the RSFSR is discussed in regard to the aspects of their lawful status, functions and activity results. It was shown with extensive materials (from more than 30 administrative territories) that systemic bacteriological examination of the groups of high tuberculosis risk markedly lowered the number of the sources of tubercle bacilli isolation not registered in tuberculosis dispensaries. Patients with urogenital pathology were found to be frequent sources of tubercle bacilli isolation. It was recommended to

Older Nonmedical and Medical Cannabis Users: Health Characteristics, Cannabis Use Patterns, and Cannabis Sources

Abstract Despite rapidly growing number of older medical cannabis users, research on them is scant. In this study, we examined medical and nonmedical cannabis users aged 50+ on health-related characteristics and cannabis use patterns and sources. Hypotheses were that compared to nonmedical users, medical users are more likely to have physical and mental health problems, use healthcare services, discuss their drug use with a healthcare professional, use cannabis more frequently, and purchase cannabis from a medical dispensary and other sources rather than obtain it as a gift, share someone else

Increasing detection of individuals with tuberculosis through engagement of informal health care providers in Northeastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) and traditional healers (THs) are informal healthcare providers with a significant presence in Nigeria and many parts of Africa. They have established partnerships and trust with community stakeholders and are often the first point of contact for health-seeking, especially in rural communities. Disease programs like malaria have engaged PPMVs, but documentation on efforts to engage these informal providers for tuberculosis (TB) care in Africa is limited. METHODS: We evaluated the impact of an intervention engaging informal health prov
