The doctor of nursing practice and nursing education: highlights, potential, and promise.

The success of the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) programs have exceeded everyone's expectations and resulted in increased interest in doctoral education in nursing. A shortage of doctorally prepared nurse educators continues to plague the profession and has a severe impact on the ability of schools of nursing to educate future generations of nurses. As a terminal degree in nursing practice, there is little focus on DNP graduates who are prepared as educators. To remedy this deficit, this article will therefore discuss and highlight (a) the significant potential of the DNP to mitigate the cu

Context of assessment in competency-based nursing education: Semi-structured interviews in nursing education institutions in a low-income country.

Organisational considerations are essential when proposing the implementation of an educational innovation like programmatic assessment. Currently, most recommendations by regulatory bodies to adopt curriculum reforms do not take into consideration the characteristics and context of low-income countries. This paper explores the contexts of four nursing education institutions in a low-income country that recently adopted the programmatic assessment approach in their programmes. The study was underpinned by the environment phase of the Design Science Research framework and used semi-structured i

An Opioid Education Program for Baccalaureate Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Previous research identified training health caregivers in the rescue medication naloxone as a strategy to prevent death from opioid overdose. Existing research on naloxone training with nursing students is limited. This educational research project investigated whether training on opioids, opioid toxicity, and overdose response could impact student knowledge, skills, and confidence responding to overdoses. METHOD: Data were collected from baccalaureate nursing students using three sources:

Tobacco dependence treatment education for baccalaureate nursing students.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. Nurses are effective interventionists for tobacco dependence treatment but lack the related education. This quasi-experimental study evaluated the impact of the Rx for Change: Clinician-Assisted Tobacco Cessation curriculum on baccalaureate nursing students' perceived knowledge, confidence, skills, and opinions related to tobacco dependence treatment. Cohort 1 completed a process evaluation to assess acceptability of the pretraining survey and intervention. Cohort 2 completed pretraining and posttraining su

Virtual simulation in nursing education: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Virtual simulation has become an increasingly used pedagogical approach in nursing education, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite rapid uptake across diverse modalities, a comprehensive map of the evidence covering the post-pandemic surge is lacking. This scoping review systematically maps evidence on virtual simulation in nursing education, identifying technology types, educational applications, research designs, outcome measures, and knowledge gaps to inform future practice and research. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs I

Developing nursing education in a low-income country.

BACKGROUND: Nursing schools in low-income countries face challenges to effectively educate and retain future nurses in rural settings where healthcare needs are more prominent. It is important to understand the experiences of nursing students in rural settings to better prepare them to meet the complex needs of the community. Little is known about nursing students' experiences in rural Uganda. The purpose of this paper is to explore nursing students' experiences of attending school in a rural setting in Uganda. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used to conduct this study. Twelve n

Nursing students' experiences with incivility in clinical education.

This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of nursing students as targets of incivility in clinical settings, to describe their perceptions of specific uncivil and favorable behaviors by nurses, and to examine how nursing students think schools of nursing should address incivility in clinical settings. Four focus groups were conducted comprising 21 prelicensure nursing students. Data were collected with semi-structured interviews. Uncivil behaviors fell into three themes: exclusionary, hostile or rude, and dismissive. Positive experiences occurred when students felt included by th

Incivility in the hospital environment: the nurse educator-staff nurse relationship.

Occurrences of incivility in nurse educator-staff nurse relationship studies are limited. A qualitative methodology (n = 6) was used to investigate nurse educators' perceptions of the main stressors for nurses during educational experiences. Identification of uncivil traits as seen by nurse educators and perceived role of nursing leaders in addressing incivility in the workplace were also identified.

[Overhauling nursing education: clinical autonomy, leadership, and educational transformation].

The reform of nursing education marks a turning point for the profession by defining nursing practice around five areas of competence centered on clinical autonomy, reasoning, and nursing consultation. It establishes a curriculum based on real-world scenarios, integrating scientific knowledge, reflective practice, and evidence-based nursing to inform decision-making at the patient's bedside. At the heart of the new framework, nurses become clinical decision-makers and care pathway leaders, working in interprofessional collaboration, within the context of the healthcare system's strategic trans

Educating Future Nurses to Address Nursing's Image-Prestige Gap.

BACKGROUND: Public perceptions of nursing may shape students' understanding of the profession and nurse educators' approaches to professional identity formation. Although nurses are often viewed as caring and socially valuable, this image may not translate into recognition of nursing as autonomous, knowledge-based, and prestigious. PURPOSE: This study examined public perceptions of nursing by distinguishing professional image from comparative prestige and identifying implications for nursing education. METHODS: A convenience sample of 280 adults completed an anonymous questionnaire assessing

Simulation in Nursing Education: iPod As a Teaching Tool for Undergraduate Nurses.

Most people with psychosis and schizophrenia experience auditory hallucinations, particularly the hearing of voices. A common cause of frustration and alienation for consumers is the lack of understanding by therapists, family members and caregivers, who find it difficult to relate to the consumers' experiences. The purpose of this study is to examine and evaluate whether students' participation in a simulated auditory hallucination will increase their understanding and knowledge about psychosis and auditory hallucinations. The design method consisted of a lecture on psychosis and schizophreni

Nursing faculty's experiences with managing academic integrity in prelicensure nursing education: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Academic integrity is foundational to higher education and essential in nursing, where it aligns with professional integrity and ethical practice. Although nursing is known for honesty, research shows nursing students engage in academic misconduct at rates similar to other disciplines. Faculty play a critical role in promoting integrity; however, limited research has explored their experiences managing misconduct. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore how nursing faculty describe their experiences managing academic integrity in prelicensure nursing programs. METHODS:

The double policy squeeze on nursing faculties: A critical policy analysis of higher education reform, nursing workforce expansion and nurse educator sustainability.

Nursing workforce policy now asks education systems to expand domestic nurse supply while preparing graduates for older populations, community and primary care, digital health and more complex care pathways. At the same time, universities are expected to demonstrate curriculum innovation, student-centred teaching, quality assurance and institutional performance. The educator capacity required to carry this combined agenda is often assumed rather than planned. This critical policy analysis develops the concept of the double policy squeeze. Using China as an illustrative policy context and linki
