BACKGROUND: Advanced and continuing education is essential for maintaining competence. Graduate students have shown an increase in online course enrollment, and similar trends are anticipated among nurses with limited access to on-site education due to the current COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. Faculty must utilize preferred teaching/learning strategies to provide high-quality online education courses that engage learners and improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed preferred teaching/learning strategies for graduate students enrolled in at least 1 asynchronous nursing

BACKGROUND: Nursing graduate education in Pakistan is increasingly recognized as pivotal for producing competent clinical leaders, educators, and researchers. However, the rigorous academic and clinical demands place immense psychological pressure on students, potentially compromising their academic performance and overall well-being. While emotional intelligence and perceived support have been independently linked to academic success in international contexts, their collective influence on nursing students in Pakistan remains underexplored.
METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional, des

The success of the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) programs have exceeded everyone's expectations and resulted in increased interest in doctoral education in nursing. A shortage of doctorally prepared nurse educators continues to plague the profession and has a severe impact on the ability of schools of nursing to educate future generations of nurses. As a terminal degree in nursing practice, there is little focus on DNP graduates who are prepared as educators. To remedy this deficit, this article will therefore discuss and highlight (a) the significant potential of the DNP to mitigate the cu

Distance education is becoming ever more important in providing continuing post basic, and especially postgraduate, education to practising professional persons, including nurses. As more and more institutions in the Republic of South Africa offer distance education courses to nurses, it is essential to take note of the positive and negative experiences of successful graduates of these programmes, in order to enhance the learning opportunities, and the success rate of nurses pursuing such distance education courses. A brief historical overview is provided about the University of South Africa (

AIM: New graduate nurses experience transition shock during the first year of their professional lives. Limited prior studies have shown how transition shock affects freshly graduated nurses' ability to provide care, but further evidence related to missed care is required. This study is a report that evaluates the relationship between transition shock experienced and missed nursing care among new graduate nurses.
DESIGN: This descriptive and correlational study involved 277 new graduate nurses working in four hospitals.
METHODS: Data were collected using two standardised scales: the MISSCARE

Schools of nursing are encouraged to provide a course of study offering unique educational models that support the learning needs of adult students who attained a non-nursing Bachelor's Degree prior to enrolling in nursing school, Also known as nontraditional students, graduates of these programs often go on to seek graduate degrees in nursing (McKenna and Brooks, 2018). Non-traditional students may be older and desire to complete graduate education in a timely manner. The study focus was to determine if pre-licensure BSN students can successfully complete graduate course work during their pre

Background and Purpose: An education program to improve the delirium care competency of nurses is important as they play an integral role in caring for patients with delirium. This study aimed to examine the effects of a standardized patient (SP)-based delirium care education program on new graduate nurses' performance and self-confidence. Methods: A waitlist control group with a crossover design was adopted. The SP-based delirium care education program was designed, implemented, and evaluated. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze differences in performance and self-confidence

Lifelong learning is key to excellent nursing. Ensuring nurses have a strong foundation for lifelong learning requires a connection between pre-licensure nursing education and ongoing workplace learning. Currently, however, a line deeply divides nurses' learning during post-secondary education and their learning in the workplace. Expanding on the findings from a previously published grounded theory study exploring workplace learning in experienced nurses, I explore aspects of the theory relevant to nursing education in more depth. I describe the concept of Getting Grounded, a process of develo

Do graduate record examination (GRE) scores serve as strong predictors of student success in graduate school in nursing, and if so, is the extent to which they may indicate success outweighed by their perceived role as a barrier to application to graduate school in nursing? Academic ability, defined as cumulative grade point average (GPA), was used as the outcome indicator for success in graduate school and was compared with admission GRE scores for 217 students admitted to graduate programs at the University of Washington School of Nursing over a 1-year period. The GRE presented a large barri

BACKGROUND: There is growing concern around inappropriate behaviour being perpetrated by under-graduate nursing students towards nursing academics. Coined contra-power harassment, is defined as the harassment of individuals in formal positions of power and authority by those that are not. The type of harassment behaviours reported include: verbal and physical violence, character assassination through social media, stalking and sexually motivated behaviours. As neonatal intensive care nurses face downsizing and/or cross-training, new opportunities are emerging for advanced practice nurses in follow-up care of neonatal intensive care unit graduates, case management, quality improvement, and community hospital care. This article identifies current issues in neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) education as the model has shifted from hospital-based, certificate programs to graduate degree programs offered by colleges/universities of nursing. Opportunities for increasing NNP role flexibility and recommendations for bridging the transition to a 21st centu

The nursing faculty shortage necessitates approaches to increase and retain faculty. The grant-funded Cohen Scholars program in Maryland provides graduate tuition in exchange for nurse educator employment. Programmatic revisions in 2020 incorporated mentorship, role socialization, pedagogy, and employment assistance to improve graduate preparedness. This study aimed to evaluate the revisions' impact on graduates' perceived preparedness and role transition via a survey of the 2020 to 2023 cohorts. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences between cohorts, though there was a trend t

A PhD starts with a passion in a subject area, which may occur through reading literature, or professional or personal experience. This journey is one that is taken over years, with multiple steps to support the person to grow and develop their own knowledge within research. The intention for any PhD is to produce original research. This should add to the existing evidence base through the production of a thesis, and subsequent article publications. The experience can be beneficial and rewarding but needs planning to ensure there are supportive strategies, funding, time, resources, and motivat
