Assessing same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities: a status report.

This report summarizes state-of-the-art approaches for assessing visual stimulus same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities. Methods are described that permit one to conduct assessments on a population-wide basis, excluding few if any participants due to failure to acquire necessary baseline performances. Methodological investigations summarized here indicate that one can obtain reliable same/different judgments with a variety of stimuli in virtually anyone for whom a basal score on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test can be obtained. This approach includes j

Status of children in blind schools in the northern areas of Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of blindness in Pakistan is estimated to be 0.9%, which comes to about 1.25 million persons. A significant number of these are persons under 20 years of age. To make these children useful citizens in future, special facilities are to be provided to these children for their education and training. A study was done to find out the visual status of the students studying in a blind school in Abbottabad, Pakistan, the only such facility in the region. METHOD: A total of 50 patients were examined during our visit to the blind school in Abbottabad. Age of the patients ranged f

What types of jobs do people with disabilities want?

INTRODUCTION: Do non-employed people with disabilities want to work, and if so, what types of jobs do they want? Researchers seeking to explain the low employment rate among people with disabilities have focused primarily on skill gaps, employment disincentives from disability income, accommodation mandates, and (to a lesser extent) employer attitudes and unwelcoming corporate cultures. There has been little attention paid to the attitudes of non-employed people with disabilities. METHODS: This paper uses the 2006 General Social Survey, a representative national survey of US adults that has d

Cross-sectional study on childhood cerebral visual impairment in New Zealand.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence, etiology, and avoidable causes of childhood cerebral visual impairment (CVI) in New Zealand. METHODS: The clinical and educational records of blind and low vision children enrolled in the Blind and Low Vision Education Network, New Zealand (BLENNZ), a national referral center, were retrospectively analyzed. The WHO Program for Prevention of Blindness (WHO/PBL) Eye Examination Record for Children with Blindness and Low Vision was used to record data from children ≤16 years of age diagnosed with CVI and visual acuity ≤6/18 enrolled with BLENNZ. Data analyze

Effect of specially designed oral health preventive programme on oral health of visually impaired children: use of audio and tactile aids.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary methods of teaching oral hygiene for the removal of dental plaque are not beneficial for visually impaired children, who depend on tactile sensations and hearing for learning. The present study was conducted to educate and motivate visually impaired children to maintain their oral health using specially designed methods that are easy for these children to understand. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of these methods over a 6-month period. METHODOLOGY: The investigation was done on 148 visually impaired children who were residents of two institutes

"You Can Learn Merely by Listening to the Way a Patient Walks through the Door": The Transmission of Sensory Medical Knowledge.

Examining the mechanisms of medical knowledge transfer, this article addresses the ways nonvisual senses are employed within medical training, asking about the role of sound, touch, and movement in transmitting knowledge of the body. Based on a 10-month ethnography in a medical massage training course for blind students, the article examines the ways sensory medical knowledge is transferred in this setting. I discuss the multisensory characteristics of medical knowledge transfer, and the dual process inherent in this sensory pedagogy, in which senses such as touch and hearing undergo medicaliz

The Learning of Difficult Visual Discriminations by the Moderately and Severely Retarded.

A procedure to effectively and efficiently train moderately and severely retarded individuals to make fine visual discriminations is described. Results suggest that expectancies for such individuals are in need of examination. Implications for sheltered workshops, work activity centers and classrooms are discussed.

Effects of multisensory tactile‑auditory integration teaching on systematic anatomy learning in visually impaired medical students.

PURPOSE: Medical education for visually impaired students faces persistent barriers due to the inherent visual dependency of anatomy and the prevalence of unimodal instructional paradigms. This study aimed to design and evaluate a novel tactile-auditory integrated teaching strategy for systematic anatomy, comparing its effectiveness against traditional Braille-based instruction in enhancing academic performance and learning attitudes among visually impaired medical students. METHODS: A 16-week cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted with 60 visually impaired undergraduate students s

An update on progress and the changing epidemiology of causes of childhood blindness worldwide.

PURPOSE: To summarize the available data on pediatric blinding disease worldwide and to present current information on childhood blindness in the United States. METHODS: A systematic search of world literature published since 1999 was conducted. Data also were solicited from each state school for the blind in the United States. RESULTS: In developing countries, 7% to 31% of childhood blindness and visual impairment is avoidable, 10% to 58% is treatable, and 3% to 28% is preventable. Corneal opacification is the leading cause of blindness in Africa, but the rate has decreased significantly fr

Newer disability certification guidelines for persons with visual disabilities in India: A review.

Visual disability leads to functional impairment and limits an individual's activities of daily living, causing emotional, social, and economic hardship. The visual disability certificate issued by the Government of India is an important document through which social security services for persons with disability (PwDs) can be provided seamlessly. It ensures equal opportunities for PwDs and their full participation in nation building. New guidelines were formulated via "The Gazette of India," dated January 4, 2018 for disability certification. The purpose of the current review is to highlight t

Generalized identity matching of two-dimensional forms by individuals with moderate to profound mental retardation.

The classic literature suggests that individuals with MAs of less than 5 years may fail tasks that require same/different judgments. In Study 1 we used an assessment procedure that provided minimal instructional programming to determine whether 17 adults with MAs ranging from 2 years, 5 months to 4 years, 11 months would show accurate identity matching-to-sample. Stimuli were letter-like nonsense forms. Eight participants showed highly accurate matching. Eight of the 9 who failed were available for further study. Of these, 5 ultimately demonstrated highly accurate matching after training with

"My Eyes Have Nothing to Do With How My Legs Move": Individuals With Visual Impairments' Experiences With Learning to Run.

The purpose of this study was to describe the reflections of adults with visual impairments about learning to run during K-12 physical education. An interpretative phenomenological analysis research approach was used, and eight adults (age 22-35 years) with visual impairments served as participants. Primary data sources were semistructured, audiotaped telephone interviews and reflective interview notes. Based on a thematic data analysis process, two themes were developed: (a) "I wouldn't expect anything better from you": running instruction in physical education and (b) "You look like the guy

Effects of different stimulus manipulations of the acquisition of word recognition in trainable mentally retarded children.

The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of different procedures for establishing transfer of stimulus control from pictorial representations to printed words in trainable mentally retarded school children. The study consisted of two experiments. In experiment 1, four training conditions were used, i.e. two conditions (stimulus shaping and stimulus connected prompt fading) in which the subjects' attention was guided to the training stimuli, and two conditions (stimulus disconnected prompt fading and no fading) in which the subjects were allowed to respond only to the prompts.
