We describe two patients with cerebrovascular complications of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV. A 16-year-old girl with spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection and a 46-year-old woman with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and multiple aortic dissections were both deficient in collagen type III, analyzed in cultured skin fibroblasts. To our knowledge, spontaneous carotid artery dissection associated with collagen type III deficiency has not been reported previously. Early clinical recognition of this syndrome is of great importance in view of the hazards of angiography and surgery. Coll

Ehlers Danlos syndrome type IV is an often lethal disease caused by various mutations of type III collagen genes. It presents in infancy and childhood in several ways, and the symptoms and signs include low birth weight, prematurity, congenital dislocation of the hips, easy inappropriate bruising (sometimes suspected as child battering), and a diagnostic facial phenotype. These features predict a lethal adult disease often complicated by fatal arterial rupture in early or middle adult life. Most affected patients can be diagnosed from radiolabelled collagen protein profiles by polyacrylamide g

Type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDSIV), unlike other forms of EDS, appears to be associated with a high incidence of pregnancy complications. In a group of fourteen families 20 women with EDS IV were identified. The diagnosis was confirmed in at least 1 member of each family by in-vitro measurement of type III collagen production by dermal fibroblasts, and all affected subjects produced lower levels of the protein than controls. Of the 20 women identified, 10 had been pregnant, and 5 had died from pregnancy-related complications. The overall risk of death in each pregnancy in this group was 25

We describe a case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) type IV in a male in early half in his twenties, who experienced recurrent and eventually fatal pulmonary hemorrhage. EDS type IV is a rare disorder of type III collagen synthesis that is characterized by unusual facies, thin translucent skin with a venous vascular pattern, easy bruising, and hypermobility of the small joints. Autopsy findings showed hypermobility of the joints and distensibility of the skin. Microscopically, the abdominal skin showed substantially decreased dermal thickness. Moreover, the reticular dermis showed fine collagen

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome denotes a group of inherited connective tissue diseases comprising nine types. Type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is the most life-threatening form. It is characterized by a type III collagen deficiency resulting in arterial fragility and death from vascular rupture or bowel perforation. This disease involves a col 3A1 gene mutation. We report the case of a 44 year-old woman with type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The medical history of our patient included bowel necrosis and two vascular ruptures. We indicate data required to establish Ehlers-Danlos syndrome diagnosis and guid

Pulmonary complications are described in a case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, established by studies of collagen biosynthesis. At age 20.5 years the patient, who had previously suffered a spontaneous colonic perforation, developed intermittent recurrent hemoptysis and had a spontaneous hemopneumothorax. At presentation, imaging studies revealed multiple scattered cavitary lesions in both lungs. On separate occasions large parenchymal cysts ensued and subsequently regressed. Reviews of other reported patients indicate that pulmonary complications do occur in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syn

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) type IV is an autosomal dominant disorder that results from mutations in the COL3A1 gene, which encodes chains of type III procollagen. Individuals with this disorder are predisposed to rupture of arteries, the bowel, and the gravid uterus. To assess the frequency of central nervous system complications, we reviewed clinical data concerning 202 individuals with EDS type IV from 121 families in which the diagnosis was confirmed by biochemical or molecular studies. We identified 19 individuals with cerebrovascular complications, which included intracranial aneurysms

This report describes the anesthetic management of a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV. This is one of the rare genetic disorder which can present both in emergency and as a scheduled surgical case.

We describe a 19-year-old male, with a family history of both systemic lupus erythematosus and Marfan syndrome, who had a history of bruisin … issue phenotype, histology, and angiographic features combined to establish a diagnosis of vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, type IV; the body habitus resembled the phenotypically-related condition of Marfan syndrome. The coincidental finding of transient aPL elevations combined to make this a difficult diagnostic and clinical management problem.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of spontaneous retrobulbar hemorrhage in type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a disorder characterized by vascular fragility and associated severe bleeding problems.
METHODS: Observational case report. Spontaneous unilateral retrobulbar hemorrhage in a 22-year-old man with type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome was documented by clinical and radiographic examination.
RESULTS: The retrobulbar hemorrhage was self-limited and resolved without visual sequelae.
CONCLUSION: Spontaneous retrobulbar hemorrhage should be recognized as part of the spectrum of type IV Ehlers-Danlos synd

The association of Ehlers-Danlos type IV syndrome and acrogeria with renovascular hypertension is reported. Ultrastructural abnormalities observed in our case were different of those associated with acrogeria. We propose that acrogeria associated with Ehlers-Danlos type IV syndrome be a different disease of acrogeria of Gottron. The occurrence of renovascular hypertension in Ehlers-Danlos is unusual.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a connective tissue disorder characterized by skin hyperelasticity and friability, hyperextensible small articulations, vascular fragility, and ocular and visceral symptoms. Ten types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have been described to date. Type IV is characterized by isolated arterial involvement with the risk of rupture, making diagnosis difficult. A 25-year-old man was operated on for a ruptured left and then right iliac artery and once again for a hepatic artery aneurysm within a nine month period. The diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome was based on clinical and hi

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type IV is an illness that often leads to premature death due to arterial rupture or dissection and is characterized by very fragile connective tissue. This report documents the death of a 30-year-old man with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type IV from myocardial rupture and cardiac tamponade following a myocardial infarction. We believe that Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type IV contributed to the coronary atherosclerosis and myocardial rupture in this young man and that this disease led indirectly to his death by myocardial infarction, an unusual cause of death in this syndrome.
