BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the early clinical results of the reconstruction of problematic elbow joints due to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using a PROSNAP linked elbow prosthesis (Kyocera Medical, Osaka, Japan) for total elbow arthroplasty.
METHODS: Seventeen elbows in 14 RA patients were replaced with a PROSNAP elbow with cement fixation. The patients comprised 1 man and 13 women, with a mean age of 63.9 years (range, 52-83 years) at the time of surgery. The preoperative conditions of the elbows were arthritis mutilans (n = 10), an ankylosed or stiff elbow with a preoperative range of mo

BACKGROUND: Internal fixation for severe open articular bone defects is sometimes ineffective or dangerous. In the emergency stage, radical debridement and infection prevention are demanded to provide a good tissue base and the space-occupying effect to provide enough necessary space to avoid soft-tissue contraction for the reconstruction. In addition, the 3D printing technology makes individual limb reconstruction a reality.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a 31-year-old patient with an open fracture and severe bone defect of his left elbow caused by traffic accident, classified as Gustil

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Fracture of the radial head associated with elbow instability is infrequent. We report a retrospective series of floating Judet prostheses implanted for comminutive fractures of the radial head associated with elbow laxity caused either by dislocation or rupture of the medial collateral ligaments.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The series included ten patients who underwent surgery from October 1996 to September 2002 at the Amiens University Hospital. The indication for radial head prosthesis was established in the emergency setting for fracture unamendable by osteosyntheis and e

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: In recent traumatology (complex radial head fractures with severe sprain of the medial collateral ligament), as well as in sequellae (extensive release for severe elbow stiffness), the implantation of a radial head prosthesis may be necessary to stabilize the humero-ulnar joint and the radial shaft. Its major advantage consists of allowing immediate postoperative mobilization. Swanson first proposed a silastic replacement of the radial head which turned out to have serious mechanical and biological disadvantages.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We propose a new Titanium implant, w

BACKGROUND: The optimal design of an elbow prosthesis for badly damaged elbows is unkown. We evaluated 23 GSB III semi-constrained (sloppy-hinged) total elbow arthroplasties in 16 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: After a mean follow-up period of 5 (2-9) years, we assessed quality of the cementing technique, signs of aseptic loosening, patient satisfaction, range of movement, and determined the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) elbow score. 3 patients had died before follow-up; thus, 20 replacements in 16 patients were available for clinical and radiograph

We report the results of a series of 59 unconstrained total arthroplasties of the elbow after a mean follow-up of 6.5 years (4 to 10). All the patients had rheumatoid arthritis. The indication for surgery was pain in all but one. Outcome was assessed by the Mayo Elbow Performance Index (MEPI). Of the 59 arthroplasties, two were lost to follow-up. Ten patients died, but as two of their arthroplasties were failures we included them in the results. The outcome in the remaining 49 was excellent in 26 (53%), good in 15 (31%), fair in one (2%) and poor or a failure in seven (14%). There was an impro

We assessed the long-term results of 58 Souter-Strathclyde total elbow replacements in 49 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The mean length of follow-up was 9.5 years (0.7 to 16.7). The mean pre-operative Mayo Elbow Performance Score was 30 (15 to 80) and at final follow-up was 82 (60 to 95). A total of 13 elbows (22.4%) were revised, ten (17.2%) for aseptic loosening, one (1.7%) for instability, one (1.7%) for secondary loosening after fracture, and one elbow (1.7%) was removed because of deep infection. The Kaplan-Meier survival rate was 70% and 53% at ten and 16 years, respectively. Failu

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: We analyzed retrospectively 30 Kudo non-constrained elbow prostheses to determine: 1) functional outcome and mobility, 2) frequency of loosening and any complications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1992 to 1998, 30 Kudo total elbow arthroplasties were performed in 29 patients, mean age 55 years. Mean follow-up was 36 months. These patients had severe joint disease: rheumatoid arthritis for 24, psoriatic arthritis for 2, and hemophilic arthritis for 3. The 29 patients experienced severe pain before surgery.
RESULTS: At review, 21 elbows were pain free and the 9 others had o

The development of upper-limb prostheses is often hindered by limited dexterity, a restricted workspace, and bulky designs, primarily due to performance limitations in proximal joints like the shoulder and elbow, which contribute to high user abandonment rates. To overcome these challenges, this paper presents a novel, bioinspired, and integrated prosthetic system as an advancement in bionic technology. The design incorporates a shoulder joint based on an asymmetric 3-RRR spherical parallel mechanism (SPM) with actuators embedded within the moving platform, and an elbow joint actuated by low-v

» This review synthesizes current evidence and techniques for optimal spherical radial head arthroplasty, focusing on the importance of accurate prosthesis sizing to ensure a successful outcome. » Replication of the native radial head's diameter and height is important. Mismatch can lead to pain, stiffness, capitellar wear, altered joint kinematics, and accelerated arthritis. » For diameter, the minimal outer diameter of the reconstructed native head is the most reliable guide. If comminution prevents this, the capitellar width on computed tomography scans provides a strong correlative measure

A 76-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and multiple comorbidities presented with septic left elbow prosthesis. Treatment included combination antibiotic therapy and removal of the prosthesis. Weeks later she was started on teriparatide. Her elbow symptoms resolved. In our experience, this is the first case in the literature reporting teriparatide efficacy in the treatment of septic arthritis.

Intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus are complex injuries that often require surgery with the goal of restoring elbow range-of-motion and function. Open reduction and internal fixation has been the preferred surgical modality; however, restoration of the medial and/or lateral columns can be complicated in fractures involving a major loss of the articular surface and bony structure. Over the past decade, 3-dimensional (3D) printing has made significant advances in the field of orthopedic surgery, specifically in guiding surgeon preoperative planning. Recently, the incorporation of 3D

INTRODUCTION: The distal humerus is a rare site for primary and metastatic bone tumors. Due to the scarcity of cases and lack of standardized surgical strategies, it is often difficult for surgeons to choose the right choice. The application of a 3D-printed prosthesis with hemiarthroplasty for the treatment of the distal humerus after tumor resection can be a very effective option.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a clinical case of a 3D-printed distal humeral prosthesis for the treatment of bone defects caused by metastatic bone tumors. The preoperative evaluation was aggressively performed, an

BACKGROUND: Current myoelectric prostheses lack proprioceptive information and rely on vision for their control. Sensory substitution is increasingly developed with non-invasive vibrotactile or electrotactile feedback, but most systems are designed for grasping or object discriminations, and few were tested for online control in amputees. The objective of this work was evaluate the effect of a novel vibrotactile feedback on the accuracy of myoelectric control of a virtual elbow by healthy subjects and participants with an upper-limb amputation at humeral level.

OBJECTIVE: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is a commonly performed surgical technique for the management of elbow disorders. The Coonrad-Morrey (CM) prosthesis is the most commonly used prosthesis in TEA. The study from Chinese cohorts remains limited, particularly regarding differences between patients with and without RA. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the medium- to long-term clinical outcomes using the CM prosthesis in a Chinese cohort, and to compare clinical outcomes between patients with and without RA.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving

OBJECTIVES: Radial head fractures often require prosthetic replacement, but post-surgical complications like radial neck osteolysis, capitellum osteopenia, and ulnohumeral osteoarthritis can arise due to altered elbow biomechanics. This study used the finite element method to evaluate how radial head prostheses (RHPs) shape and material affect elbow joint biomechanics.
METHODS: A 3D elbow model was developed, including bones, ligaments, and cartilage. Implants featuring two geometries (anatomical vs. axisymmetric) and three materials (polymethylmethacrylate [PMMA], polyether ether ketone [PEE
