Indirect electrical injuries from capacitive coupling: a rarely mentioned electrosurgical complication in monopolar laparoscopy.

Electrothermal injuries in monopolar laparoscopy may derive indirectly, but rarely, from capacitive coupling releasing stray currents into neighboring non-targeted tissues, with intact instrument insulation. Since 2007, seven episodes of indirect electrosurgical damage to non-targeted tissues have been observed in our gynecological practice, including incidental coagulative necrosis of appendix, Fallopian tube, cystic pedicle, and broad ligament stump. Such an electrical response becomes greater where there is increased contact with the cystic wall (cysts <3 cm in diameter). Appropriate measur

Amelioration of oxygen-induced osteoporosis in the in vitro fetal rat tibia with a capacitively coupled electrical field.

Near-term fetal rat tibiae were grown in M.E.M. Eagle/NCTC 135/15% newborn calf serum in 5% carbon dioxide and 5, 10, 21, 35, 60, and 90% oxygen for 3, 7, 10, and 14 days. Linear growth of the explants, as measured from macrophotographs of the explants at day zero and each of the days above, was greatest in the lower oxygen concentrations and least in the higher oxygen concentrations. Breaking strengths of the tibial diaphyses were significantly reduced in those explants grown in 60 and 90% oxygen. When the fetal rat tibiae were grown in 60% oxygen for 7 days and were subjected to a capacitive

Up-regulation of expression of selected genes in human bone cells with specific capacitively coupled electric fields.

The objective of the described experiments was to determine the electrical parameters that lead to optimal expression of a number of bone-related genes in cultured human bone cells exposed to a capacitively coupled electric field. Human calvarial osteoblasts were grown in modified plastic Cooper dishes in which the cells could be exposed to various capacitively coupled electric fields. The optimal duration of stimulation and optimal duration of response to the electrical field, and the optimal amplitude, frequency and duty cycle were all determined for each of the genes analyzed. Results indic

Label-free all-electrical tracking of individual and collective cell migration on a megapixel CMOS capacitance sensor.

Label-free tracking of adherent cell migration could enable important insights into biological processes such as tissue repair, inflammatory response, or cancer progression. Nevertheless, visualizing unlabeled animal cells using optical microscopy remains challenging due to low contrast as well as frequent changes in cell shape and number. A promising alternative uses electrical capacitance measurements, which are sensitive to cell adhesion to electrode surfaces. However, prior examples often utilized electrodes with areas larger than single cells, resulting in averaged readouts over multiple

Assessing thermal changes in the equine thoracolumbar region following different capacitive-resistive electrical transfer protocols.

INTRODUCTION: Capacitive-resistive electrical transfer (CRET) is an endogenous non-invasive technique, used as deep diathermy. We pursue to analyze the temperature changes by applying different CRET protocols in the thoracolumbar spine of horses, between thoracic vertebrae 15 and lumbar 2. METHODS: Ten clinically sound horses without thoracolumbar pain underwent various CRET protocols applied to a standardized thoracolumbar region (T15-L2). The protocols included sham (device off), low intensity (LIP, 5%), medium intensity (MIP, 30%), and high intensity (HIP, 40%). The HIP protocol was furthe

Failure of the rabbit tibial growth plate to respond to the long-term application of a capacitively-coupled electrical field.

A continuous 5-V peak-to-peak, 60 kHz capacitively-coupled sine wave signal was applied to the proximal tibial growth plate in fifteen 9-week-old male New Zealand white rabbits for 6 weeks. A pair of flexible stainless steel "injectrodes" was held in place medially and laterally on the surface of the proximal hindlimb in each rabbit by means of tape wrappings. The electrodes were connected to a 9-V battery-operated power unit carried in a dorsal pouch in a body vest worn by each rabbit. Control animals wore the identical apparatus, only the power unit was inactive. Small Tantalum markers were

Critical role of quantum and electrical double layer capacitance in 2D electrode/ionic-liquid electrolyte based supercapacitors.

This work examines graphene and MXene electrodes integrated with three imidazolium-based ionic liquid electrolytes for supercapacitor applications. Quantum capacitance and electric double-layer capacitance were systematically analyzed to evaluate electrode-electrolyte performance. MXenes exhibited nearly an order of magnitude higher quantum capacitance than multilayer graphene, highlighting their superior suitability. Among the electrolytes, EMIM-TCB showed limited applicability with peak capacitance confined to zero potential. In contrast, BMIM-PFand BMIM-BFdisplayed strong compatibility, par

Step capacitive array sensor to trigger stimulation on Functional Electrical Stimulators devices for Drop Foot: Preliminary results.

In this work, a new custom wireless capacitive step sensor and a real-time algorithm are proposed to detect the start and end of the swing phase of the gait to trigger the stimulation in Functional Electrical Stimulator devices (FES) for Drop Foot. For this, an array of capacitive pressure sensors was designed to detect patterns of the gait swing phase through the Heel Center of Pressure (HCOP). The proposed system recognized all the events with an average error of 20.86±0.02[ms] for the heel strike (initial contact) and 27.60±0.03[ms] for the heel-off (final contact) compared with lower-back

Treatment of denervation/disuse osteoporosis in the rat with a capacitively coupled electrical signal: effects on bone formation and bone resorption.

Utilizing a sciatic neurectomy model of disuse osteoporosis, the effects on rates of bone formation and bone resorption were examined when a capacitively coupled electrical signal was applied to the denervated tibia in the rat. It was found that a low-voltage, symmetrical sine wave, 60-kHz, capacitively coupled signal had no significant effect on the amount of bone resorption occurring in denervated right tibiae in rats previously labeled with [3H]tetracycline. This was true whether the signal was applied while osteoporosis was developing (prevention of osteoporosis) or after it had been estab

Biomechanical assessment of dressage Spanish horses through accelerometry and the immediate effects of a single capacitive resistive electrical transfer session.

BACKGROUND: Capacitive resistive electrical transfer (CRET) is a non-invasive electromagnetic diathermic technique. The effect of its application 24 h prior to exercise, compared to a sham application performed with the device off, was evaluated in 8 Spanish Purebred dressage stallions. CRET was applied bilaterally on the neck, back, and croup. The horses wore an accelerometer fixed on the sternal area during a dressage test, and spatiotemporal stride parameters, total and dorsoventral (DVAA), longitudinal (LAA), and mediolateral accelerometric activities, as well as dorsoventral displacement,

Accelerometric Changes before and after Capacitive Resistive Electric Transfer Therapy in Horses with Thoracolumbar Pain Compared to a SHAM Procedure.

Capacitive resistive electric transfer (CRET), a radiofrequency at 448 kHz, increases flexibility in quadricep muscles of human athletes. To assess whether CRET would result in clinical and biomechanical improvements in horses with thoracolumbar pain, 18 sport horses were divided into two groups: CRET (n = 9), subjected to four CRET sessions, during two consecutive weeks, and SHAM (n = 9), subjected to the same procedure with the device off. Clinical examination and accelerometry were performed before and after the four sessions. During the study, horses were in training and in active competit

Sensitivity of bulk electrical impedance spectroscopy (bio-capacitance) probes to cell and culture properties: Study on CHO cell cultures.

Bulk electrical impedance spectroscopy (bio-capacitance) probes, hold significant promise for real-time cell monitoring in bioprocesses. Focusing on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, we present a sensitivity analysis framework to assess the impact of cell and culture properties on the complex permittivity spectrum, εmix, and its associated parameters, permittivity increment, Δε, critical frequency, fc, and Cole-Cole parameter, α, measured by bio-capacitance probes. Our sensitivity analysis showed that Δε is highly sensitive to cell size and concentration, making it suitable for estimating bio

Short-Term Effects of Capacitive and Resistive Electric Transfer Therapy and Static Splinting in the Management of Trigger Finger: A Non-Randomized Clinical Study.

Trigger finger (TF) is a common debilitating hand disorder that often results in pain and functional limitations. Currently accepted conservative treatments include splinting, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and corticosteroid injections. Recently, transfer energy capacitive and resistive (TECAR) therapy is emerging as a promising intervention for its potential to enhance microcirculation, reduce pain and inflammation, and stimulate tissue regeneration in various musculoskeletal conditions. However, its effectiveness for TF remains unclear. This study aims to compare the outcomes between

Efficacy of Capacitive and Resistive Electric Transfer (CRET) in the management of primary chronic pelvic pain syndrome in women: a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic primary pelvic pain syndrome (CPPPS) in women is common and often highly disabling. It is associated with ongoing pelvic pain and a marked impact on physical, psychological, sexual, and social wellbeing. In many women, pelvic floor muscle (PFM) overactivity goes unrecognized and may contribute to symptom persistence. Capacitive and Resistive Electric Transfer (CRet) diathermy is used in musculoskeletal care, but its usefulness in CPPPS is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To compare CRet diathermy with placebo in women with CPPPS and pelvic floor hypertonia, focusing on pain, qual

Thermal and non-thermal effects off capacitive-resistive electric transfer application on the Achilles tendon and musculotendinous junction of the gastrocnemius muscle: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Calf muscle strain and Achilles tendon injuries are common in many sports. For the treatment of muscular and tendinous injuries, one of the newer approaches in sports medicine is capacitive-resistive electric transfer therapy. Our objective was to analyze this in vitro, using invasive temperature measurements in cadaveric specimens. METHODS: A cross-sectional study designed with five fresh frozen cadavers (10 legs) were included in this study. Four interventions (capacitive and resistive modes; low- and high-power) was performed for 5 min each by a diathermy "T-Plus" device. Achil
