Nanomaterials responding to microwaves: an emerging field for imaging and therapy.

In recent years, new microwave-based imaging, sensing and hyperthermia applications have emerged in the field of diagnostics and therapy. For diagnosis, this technology involves the application of low power microwaves, utilising contrast between the relative permittivity of tissues to identify pathologies. This contrast can be further enhanced through the implementation of nanomaterials. For therapy, this technology can be applied in tissues either through hyperthermia, which can help anti-cancer drug tumour penetration or as ablation to destroy malignant tissues. Nanomaterials can absorb elec

Psychological consequences of terrorist attacks: prevalence and predictors of mental health problems in Pakistani emergency responders.

Earlier research showing moderate to high prevalence rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems in emergency personnel has mostly been carried out in Western countries. Data from non-Western countries are largely lacking. The current study aimed to gather evidence on the prevalence of PTSD, anxiety, and depression in N=125 Pakistani emergency workers, most of whom (n=100; 80%) had been exposed to terrorist attacks. Fifteen percent of participants showed clinically relevant levels of PTSD, and 11-16% of participants reported heightened levels of anxiety or d

Vaccination strategies for responding to public health emergencies of infectious diseases.

The outbreak of infectious diseases remains a serious public health problem in today's society, and emergency vaccination stands as a pivotal public health intervention for responding to the tricky situation and reducing the impact of public health emergencies. This review systematically examines vaccine emergency vaccination policies and expert recommendations from both domestic and international sources, revealing a current lack of standardized reference criteria and evidence-based implementation guidelines regarding optimal timing and specific intervention measures. It is imperative to devel

Partnering with disabilityled organizations to prepare and respond to public health emergencies.

Over a quarter of adults in the United States live with a disability, increasing their risk for severe outcomes from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Additionally, people with disabilities face continuous barriers in accessing COVID-19 vaccinations. Disabilityled organizations are catalytic partners for public health departments to reach and provide services to and build partnerships with people with disabilities. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation funded three disabilityled organizations, two nationally focused and one locally focused, to partner wi

Responding to an Emerging Need: Implementing Telehealth in Acute Hospital Rehabilitation.

This article outlines a multidisciplinary approach to implementing a telehealth program in the acute care hospital setting during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Telehealth has been used in many practice areas, although it can be a particular challenge to establish in an acute care hospital given the fast-paced environment. However, the COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique situation. In-person treatment interactions became increasingly high risk for both patient and provider, and there was an emerging need to conserve personal protective equipment and limit exposure. In respo

The willingness of U.S. Emergency Medical Technicians to respond to terrorist incidents.

A nationally representative sample of basic and paramedic emergency medical service providers in the United States was surveyed to assess their willingness to respond to terrorist incidents. EMT's were appreciably (9-13%) less willing than able to respond to such potential terrorist-related incidents as smallpox outbreaks, chemical attacks, or radioactive dirty bombs (p<0.0001). EMTs who had received terrorism-related continuing medical education within the previous 2 years were twice as likely (OR=1.9, 95% CI 1.9, 2.0) to be willing to respond to a potential smallpox dissemination incident as

Tumor-restraining fibroblasts emerge after chemotherapy specifically in responders.

In this issue of Cancer Cell, Ma et al. identify a neoadjuvant chemotherapy-induced population of PTGER3+ cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in patients with bladder cancer.1 These CAFs undergo lipid oxidation reprogramming and enhance CD8+ T cell function, facilitating tumor microenvironment remodeling and restraining tumor progression.

Is It Personal? The Effect of Personal vs. Occupational Trauma on PTSD Symptom Severity in Emergency Responders.

Emergency responders are exposed to potentially traumatic events in their line of work and as such, are at increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Little is known about the characteristics of trauma associated with PTSD symptoms in this population. This study analyzed the self-reported worst traumatic event on the PTSD checklist for DSM-5 for a sample of N = 610 emergency responders, working as police officers, paramedics, firefighters or search and rescue personnel. Sufficient information was available to code 98% (N = 603) participants' trauma; 84% (N = 509) met D

Exposure to aggression in three contexts of emergency response: A longitudinal examination of the relationship with psychological characteristics of the emergency responder.

Some emergency responders are more often exposed to workplace aggression than others. Victimological theories and previous studies suggest that characteristics of the target may predict exposure to workplace aggression. This paper examines the relationship between negative affect, hostile attribution, dominance, empathy, self-evaluations, and exposure to workplace aggression among emergency responders. Emergency medical workers, firefighters and police officers in the Netherlands filled in a survey during three measurement occasions (6 months apart). Results from the three occupational groups

Exploring Metrics of Biological Diversity to Better Predict and Respond to Emerging Diseases.

The emergence of infectious diseases is largely driven by spillover events from animal communities into human populations, with zoonotic pathogens accounting for 75% of novel infectious agents. In recent years, the incidence and prevalence of these pathogens have been on the rise, and efforts to understand the underlying ecological principles responsible for the reported increases have highlighted the role of biodiversity loss as a major contributing factor. Despite its role in pathogen emergence, how biodiversity is measured can differ drastically and may underlie variability in study results

Recognising occupational PTSD as a statutory occupational disease: a step forward for emergency responders' mental health in China.

ABSTRACTThis commentary discusses China's recognition of occupational post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a statutory occupational disease, a landmark advancement in mental health support for emergency responders. The policy mandates legal protections, including access to diagnosis, treatment, and compensation, for workers affected by occupational trauma. However, the framework is currently limited to specific professions, such as police officers, healthcare workers, firefighters, and rescue personnel. Additionally, it requires documented trauma exposure during duty, which may exclude wor

Creation of a Systems-Level Checklist to Address Stress and Violence in Fire-Based Emergency Medical Services Responders.

Between 57 and 93% of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responders reported having experienced verbal or physical violence at least once in their career. Therefore, the primary goal of this study was to develop a systems-level checklist for violence against fire-based EMS responders using findings from a systematic literature review and outcomes from a national stakeholder meeting. First, a literature review of violence against EMS responders resulted in an extensive list of 162 academic and industrial publications. Second, from these sources, 318 potential candidate items were developed. Third
