BACKGROUND: People with dementia and their carers often fail to receive the right care and can be delayed receiving the right diagnosis. A disconnect between health and social care systems and professionals is one of the main reasons. However, it remains unclear how health and social care services fail to connect, and what examples of good practice may support improved care service connectivity more widely.
METHODS: This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with health and social care professionals, unpaid carers, and people with dementia from eight European countries (Czech

Background/Objectives: People with intellectual disabilities (IDs), representing approximately 200 million individuals globally (3% of the world's population), face significant disparities in cancer prevention and care. While cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, the intersection of cancer care and intellectual disability presents unique challenges that demand specialized attention within healthcare systems. This study evaluates the current status and effectiveness of National Cancer Control Programs (NCCPs) for individuals with intellectual disabilities across the E

Although mexiletine effectively treats myotonia, supply disruptions affected Europe between 2008-2018. MyoPath was a mixed-methods, cross-sectional, market research survey conducted January-June 2018 to evaluate consequences of limited access to/awareness of mexiletine in people with myotonia. Part A: qualitative structured interviews (clinicians; advocates for adult patients); Part B: quantitative online questionnaire completed by people with self-reported history of myotonia. Part A: Interviews (clinicians, n=12; patient advocates, n=5; 12 countries) indicated poor mexiletine awareness among

BACKGROUND: The effect of hearing and vision difficulties on the risk of developing dementia and worsening outcomes in people already living with dementia is well established. We evaluated the clinical impact of a hearing and vision rehabilitation and support programme on quality of life in people with mild-to-moderate dementia and concurrent sensory difficulties.
METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group, multicentre, observer-blind, superiority randomised controlled trial in seven older adult clinics in five European countries (Cyprus, France, Greece, Ireland, and the UK). People with mild-to-

Cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) deficiency disorder (CDD) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy caused by variants in the CDKL5 gene. The disorder is characterized by intractable early-onset seizures, severe neurodevelopmental delay, hypotonia, motor disabilities, cerebral (cortical) visual impairment and microcephaly. With no disease-modifying therapies available for CDD, treatment is symptomatic with an initial focus on seizure control. Another unmet need in the management of people with CDD is the lack of evidence to aid standardized care and guideline development. To addre

BACKGROUND: The European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) Guidelines cover key aspects of HIV management with major updates every two years.
GUIDELINE HIGHLIGHTS: The 2019 Guidelines were extended with a new section focusing on drug-drug interactions and other prescribing issues in people living with HIV (PLWH). The recommendations for treatment-naïve PLWH were updated with four preferred regimens favouring unboosted integrase inhibitors. A two-drug regimen with dolutegravir and lamivudine, and a three-drug regimen including doravirine were also added to the recommended initial regimens. Lower th

The main aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of people in severe social isolation as a proxy for high risk of hikikomori using data from 29 European countries. The relationship between the presence/absence of severe social isolation and demographic and psychosocial variables was also investigated. Publicly available data from the European Social Survey (ESS) round 9 collected between August 2018 and January 2020 were used. Data from the ESS round 1 (September 2002 -December 2003) and round 10 (September 2020 -May 2022) were also examined to investigate changes in the preval

People with bleeding disorders (PWBD) have been exposed to the risk of developing chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis after replacement therapy. Today, the advent of new pharmacologic strategies for the control of hemostasis and the efficacious antiviral therapies against hepatitis C virus and hepatitis B virus have significantly reduced this risk. However, the definitive success for liver health in this clinical setting is also influenced by other factors, such as the severity of liver disease at the time of hepatitis B virus/hepatitis C virus antiviral therapy and the exposure to highly pr

BACKGROUND: International adaptation of healthcare interventions requires sensitivity to local contexts, especially in palliative care, where healthcare systems and cultural expectations about end of life differ widely. Pal-Cycles is an intervention that aims to improve transitions in care for patients with advanced cancer. This intervention was adapted for implementation in a stepped wedge trial across seven European countries (Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania and the UK). This paper aims to illustrate the process of adapting a palliative care intervention (Pal-Cyc

The impacts of hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) Salmonella infection on public health and on animal welfare and conservation are unknown. We isolated Salmonella Enteritidis multi-locus sequence-type (ST)183 from 46/170 (27%) hedgehog carcasses (27 S. Enteritidis phage type (PT)11, 18 of a novel PT66 biotype and one with co-infection of these PTs) and from 6/208 (3%) hedgehog faecal samples (4 PT11, 2 PT66) from across Great Britain, 2012-2015. Whole genome phylogenetic analysis of the hedgehog isolates and ST183 from people in England and Wales found that PT11 and PT66 form two divergent clades.
