Pediatric exoskeletons have the potential to aid the walking of children with neuromuscular conditions such as crouch gait. However, current exoskeleton devices often rely on bulky batteries and motors. Recent developments in 3D-printing technologies now allow the construction of lightweight yet stiff parts that are easy to customize and use for pediatric applications. We present the mechanical design of a 3D-printed and spring-powered knee exoskeleton for gait assistance. The device had a mass of ∼1.25 kg per leg and provided a knee extensor moment during the stance phase of gait, simulating

Almost 1 million Americans suffer from debilitative disorders or injuries to the hand, which result in decreased grip strength and/or impaired ability to hold objects. The objective of this study was to design and test the functioning of a fivedigit exoskeleton for the human hand that augments pinching and grasping efforts. The exoskeleton digits and the wrist and forearm structure was computer designed and 3-D printed using ABS plastic, while the housing for the control system, motors, and batteries was constructed from laser-cut acrylic. The user's finger movement efforts were monitored with

Wearable exoskeletons are emerging as a new tool for gait training. However, comparisons between exoskeletons and conventional orthoses in terms of safety and feasibility are scarce. This study assessed the safety, feasibility, usability, and learning process of using the ABLE Exoskeleton in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) while comparing it with knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs). In this randomized, crossover clinical trial, 10 patients with chronic complete SCI (T4-T12) conducted a 10-session training and assessment protocol with each device: KAFOs and the ABLE Exoskeleton. Outcomes on s

The objective of this study was to assess how wearing a passive trunk exoskeleton affects metabolic costs, movement strategy and muscle activation during repetitive lifting and walking. We measured energy expenditure, kinematics and muscle activity in 11 healthy men during 5 min of repetitive lifting and 5 min of walking with and without exoskeleton. Wearing the exoskeleton during lifting, metabolic costs decreased as much as 17%. In conjunction, participants tended to move through a smaller range of motion, reducing mechanical work generation. Walking with the exoskeleton, metabolic costs inc

PURPOSE: Robotic exoskeleton walking has become increasingly prevalent in the management of paralysis. To support better integration into clinical practice, there is a need to understand the users' perceptions of the effects of exposure to large volumes of robotic walking. This study aims to describe the patient perspective of exoskeleton walking for the expert user.
METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with 19 participants (group size range 3-4) who had experienced large numbers of exoskeleton walking sessions (>24). The qualitative methodology used an interpretive phenomenological design an

Squatting is an intensive activity routinely performed in the workplace to lift and lower loads. The effort to perform a squat can decrease using an exoskeleton that considers individual worker's differences and assists them with a customized solution, namely, personalized assistance. Designing such an exoskeleton could be improved by understanding how the user's muscle activity changes when assistance is provided. This study investigated the change in the muscle recruitment and activation pattern when personalized assistance was provided. The personalized assistance was provided by an ankle-f

Exoskeletons that make running easier could increase users' physical activity levels and provide related health benefits. In this paper, we present the design of a portable, powered ankle exoskeleton that assists running and uses lightweight and compact twisted string actuators. It has limited durability at this stage of development, but preliminary results of its power to mass density and potential for reducing the metabolic cost of running are promising. The exoskeleton can provide high peak power of 700 W per leg, 7 times more than prior twisted-string devices, and high peak torques of 43 N

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) occurs when the nucleus pulposus or annulus fibrosus protrudes into the intervertebral space, potentially compressing nerve roots and causing symptoms such as sciatica, restricted mobility, and lower extremity weakness. The development of portable lumbar exoskeleton devices offers a new approach, combining traction, range of motion (ROM) exercises, and resistance training in a single system, potentially reducing treatment complexity and enhancing LDH patient outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel lumbar exos

Robotic exoskeletons can enhance human locomotion by reducing its metabolic cost. Designing effective wearable assistive devices requires a systematic approach that accounts for the influence of device kinematics/dynamics and effects of assistance torques on human performance. While comprehensive human-subject experiments to evaluate multiple designs are often impractical, musculoskeletal simulations can serve as a powerful tool for optimizing exoskeleton designs and their corresponding assistance strategies. This paper presents a musculoskeletal simulation-based multi-criteria design optimiza

This paper presents the design and implementation of an Anti-Finger Roll-Up (AFRU) mechanism for a cable-driven grasp assistance exoskeleton. Finger rollup describes the premature flexion of the distal and proximal interphalangeal joints relative to the metacarpophalangeal joint as a result of a cable pulling directly on the fingertip. This leads to unstable pinching grasps or grasps that place the target object outside of the grasp envelope. This device provides a solution to finger roll-up by emulating an increase in joint stiffness in the distal interphalangeal and proximal interphalangeal j

Exoskeleton devices can reduce metabolic cost, increase walking speed, and augment load-carrying capacity. However, little is known about the effects of powered assistance on the sensory information required to achieve these tasks. To learn how to use an assistive device, humans must integrate novel sensory information into their internal model. This process may be disrupted by challenges to the sensory systems used for posture. We investigated the exoskeleton-induced changes to balance performance and sensory integration during quiet standing. We asked 11 unimpaired adults to perform a virtua

Lower limb exoskeletons serve multiple purposes, like supporting and augmenting movement. Biomechanical models are practical tools to understand human movement, and motor control. This paper provides an overview of these models and a comprehensive review of the current applications of them in assistive device development. It also critically analyzes the existing literature to identify research gaps and suggest future directions. Biomechanical models can be broadly classified as conceptual and detailed models and can be used for the design, control, and assessment of exoskeletons. Also, these m

For exoskeletons to be successful in real-world settings, they will need to be effective across a variety of terrains, including on inclines. While some single-joint exoskeletons have assisted incline walking, recent successes in level-ground assistance suggest that greater improvements may be possible by optimizing assistance of the whole leg. To understand how exoskeleton assistance should change with incline, we used human-in-the-loop optimization to find whole-leg exoskeleton assistance torques that minimized metabolic cost on a range of grades. We optimized assistance for three non-disabl

Owing to the unexplored potential to harness knee extension power during jumping, the current study aimed to examine how joint mechanics were altered with a biologically inspired, passive bi-articular ankle-knee exoskeleton, which could potentially facilitate greater jump height by increasing work production about the knee and ankle. Twenty-five participants (16 males and 9 females, 175.2 ± 8.2 cm, 72.9 ± 10.3 kg, 24.0 ± 3.4 years) performed maximal squat jumping with and without the exoskeletal device and we compared jump height, joint moment and joint work of the lower limbs. OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSThis study evaluated two passive back-support exoskeletons, a rigid and a soft model, during three construction tasks: shoveling, rebar tying, and welding, using workers' subjective feedback for the assessment. Both devices were found to reduce strain on the lower back and were generally perceived as supportive, although the rigid exoskeleton was perceived as more restrictive than the soft one. Workers reported task-specific differences in comfort, performance, and usability, with common concerns including thermal discomfort, device weight, and interference with tools
