From pole to pole, life-long research of sleep in extreme environments.

In November 1965, Michel Jouvet accepted me into his laboratory in Lyon as a medical student at a time when sleep research was an adventure. After 4 years of investigations in cats, I obtained my medical doctorate. Being a military physician, I was posted to Antarctica for wintering over and was initiated by Jean Rivolier into the psychology of small isolated human groups. I recorded 180 polysomnographic (PSG) nights in eight of my companions. This was my first contribution to research on human sleep under extreme environments and conditions. I then entered René Hénane's military thermophysiol

MetFish: a Metabolomics Pipeline for Studying Microbial Communities in Chemically Extreme Environments.

Metabolites have essential roles in microbial communities, including as mediators of nutrient and energy exchange, cell-to-cell communication, and antibiosis. However, detecting and quantifying metabolites and other chemicals in samples having extremes in salt or mineral content using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based methods remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a facile method based on in situ chemical derivatization followed by extraction for analysis of metabolites and other chemicals in hypersaline samples, enabling for the first time direct LC-MS-based exom

A brief Meaningful Work and Enjoyment Scale (MeWES) for extreme operational environments.

Individuals working in extreme operational environments face sustained psychological and physiological stressors that can degrade wellbeing and performance. This study presents the development and validation of the Meaningful Work and Enjoyment Scale (MeWES), a brief measure designed to assess the extent to which individuals perceive their work as meaningful and enjoyable in isolated, confined, and high-demand settings. Grounded in the job demands-resources model and theories of resilience and engagement, the MeWES was evaluated across three populations: Antarctic expedition personnel, senior

Convergent evolution of conserved mitochondrial pathways underlies repeated adaptation to extreme environments.

Extreme environments test the limits of life; yet, some organisms thrive in harsh conditions. Extremophile lineages inspire questions about how organisms can tolerate physiochemical stressors and whether the repeated colonization of extreme environments is facilitated by predictable and repeatable evolutionary innovations. We identified the mechanistic basis underlying convergent evolution of tolerance to hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-a toxicant that impairs mitochondrial function-across evolutionarily independent lineages of a fish (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliidae) from H2S-rich springs. Using compar

Exploring the Emotional Dysregulation Scale-Short Form in isolated, confined, and extreme environments.

UNLABELLED: The Emotional Dysregulation Scale-Short Form (EDS-S) may have potential for assessing emotional dysregulation (ED) both in general clinical mental health environments and in specialised work settings. Before it can be used fairly and appropriately, evidence of its validity in the local South African (SA) context is required. This study thus explored its psychometric characteristics among local working adult samples by pursuing three specific objectives, namely, to investigate its structural validity, its construct validity, and issues around practical use (e.g. priming bias and abi

Piezo tube stacked scanning tunneling microscope for use in extreme and confined environments.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) is widely used for observing atomic structures due to its ultra-high spatial resolution. As the core units of STM, the coarse stepper motor and imaging unit, have conflicting size requirements for piezo tubes. Longer piezo tubes yield greater output force and easier movement for the motor, while shorter tubes enhance imaging precision and stability for the scanner. Traditional STMs typically employ a large piezo tube for coarse stepping and a smaller one for independent imaging to address this issue. Here, we present the new design of a piezo tube stacked ST

Adaptation to Extreme Environments in an Admixed Human Population from the Atacama Desert.

Inorganic arsenic (As) is a toxic xenobiotic and carcinogen associated with severe health conditions. The urban population from the Atacama Desert in northern Chile was exposed to extremely high As levels (up to 600 µg/l) in drinking water between 1958 and 1971, leading to increased incidence of urinary bladder cancer (BC), skin cancer, kidney cancer, and coronary thrombosis decades later. Besides, the Andean Native-American ancestors of the Atacama population were previously exposed for millennia to elevated As levels in water (∼120 µg/l) for at least 5,000 years, suggesting adaptation to thi

Sustainable Hierarchical Networking for Extreme-Edge AI-Based Wildlife Monitoring in Resource-Constrained Environments.

Deploying artificial intelligence (AI) for wildlife monitoring in remote environments remains challenging due to limited energy, computational resources, and unreliable communication. Conventional edge AI systems rely on continuous sensing, high-power communication, and full-precision models, resulting in excessive energy consumption. This paper presents a green-energy-based hierarchical network architecture for sustainable wildlife monitoring at the extreme edge. The framework distributes sensing, communication, and AI inference across edge, far-edge, and extreme-edge layers. A low-power IEEE

Imaging and Interventional Radiology Capabilities in Extreme Cold Environments: Operational Implications for Military Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme cold environments impose unique constraints on the delivery of image-guided and interventional care due to hypothermia-associated coagulopathy, altered drug metabolism, impaired operator performance, and temperature-sensitive imaging and device systems. These challenges are particularly relevant to military operations in polar and austere settings, where evacuation may be delayed, and medical capability must be delivered with limited infrastructure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This work presents an operationally focused review of the physiologic effects of cold exposure, imag

Selection of Non-Saccharomyces Yeasts from Extreme Oenological Environments for Potential Use in Winemaking.

This study evaluated the oenological potential of two non-Saccharomyces yeast strains, Hanseniaspora opuntiae TR-5 and Zygosaccharomyces bailii L-25, isolated from extreme winemaking environments in southern Spain. Out of 156 yeast isolates screened from high-sugar musts and flor yeast biofilms, strains were selected based on their β-glucosidase activity, killer phenotype, and ethanol production, traits associated with aroma release and microbial competition. Fermentation trials on sugar-rich synthetic medium showed that both H. opuntiae and Z. bailii achieved ethanol yields of 10% v/v and res

Duckweed Proteins in Neuro-Nutrition: Mechanistic Insights and Translational Relevance for Military and Extreme Environments.

Modern military performance increasingly depends on cognitive resilience and neurological health, making nutrition a strategic determinant of combat readiness. This review integrates nutritional neuroscience and military medicine to explore duckweed as a next-generation neuro-nutritional resource. Duckweed species possess protein content (25-45% dry weight) and a complete essential almost amino acid (EAA) profile that may contribute to pathways involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, neuroplasticity, and stress adaptation. Beyond amino acids, duckweed delivers neuroprotective compounds such as

Heat acclimation mediates cellular protection via HSP70 stabilization of HIF-1α protein in extreme environments.

Heat acclimation (HA) is an evolutionarily conserved trait that enhances tolerance to novel stressors by inducing heat shock proteins (HSPs). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain elusive. In this study, we established a HA mouse model through intermittent heat stimulation. Subsequently, this model was evaluated using an array of physiological and histological assessments. In vitro, HA cell model with mouse brain microvascular endothelial cells (bEnd.3) was established and analyzed for cell viability and apoptosis markers. We investigated HA-mediated heat and hypo

Combat Casualty Care in Arctic or Extreme Cold Environments: Considerations for the Army Health System.

The Department of the Army's 2021 strategy to "Regain Arctic Dominance" highlights the operational necessity of sustaining combat readiness in Arctic or extreme cold environments (AoECE). Presented are five scenarios inspired by casualties that illustrate capability gaps and best practices as the Army Health System applies tactical combat casualty care (TCCC) in austere, frigid climates: (1) adapting TCCC to the AoECE as a unique environment; (2) technological limitations in the prevention and treatment of hypothermia; (3) freezing cold injury (FCI) and non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) treatmen

Interactive causal diagram of habitat design impacts on behavioral health and performance in extreme environments.

As crewed long-duration space exploration missions become increasingly Earth-independent and reliant on onboard technology, risks due to human-system incompatibility become critical to address. In a space habitat, establishing objective and meaningful relationships between the individual and the environment has been challenging due to multidirectional influences between system components. Feedback loops between behavioral health processes and outcomes complicate characterization of influence within the system. Yet, it remains crucial for habitat designers and stakeholders to trade design decis

Psychological monitoring in isolated, confined, and extreme environments: promise and challenges of ecological momentary assessment.

Personnel in Isolated, Confined, and Extreme (ICE) environments face unique psychological stressors that can compromise performance, safety, and mission success. Traditional psychological monitoring approaches, predominantly retrospective questionnaires and clinical interviews, may inadequately capture the dynamic nature of psychological adaptation in these demanding contexts. This mini-review examines the potential role of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) as part of a comprehensive approach to psychological monitoring in ICE environments. We review current monitoring practices across spa

Scalable Fabrication of Flexible High-Entropy RE3Al5O12 Garnet Ceramic Fibers for Thermal Insulation in Extreme Environments.

As an emerging class of ceramic materials, high-entropy ceramics (HEC) have captured significant interest. Yet, their inherent brittleness and inelasticity restrict broader engineering applications like thermal protection. Here, we report a carboxylic ligand confinement strategy, integrating sol-gel electrospinning with optimized postcalcination treatment, enabling the scalable fabrication of flexible high-entropy (Y0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2Er0.2)3Al5O12 (RE3Al5O12) single-crystal fiber films. Biomimetic Flexible SiC/SiOx Microribbon Aerogels for Thermal Insulation and Electromagnetic Wave Absorption in Extreme Environments.

Silicon carbide (SiC) aerogels are attractive protective materials for extreme environments owing to their low density, thermal stability, thermal insulation, and electromagnetic wave attenuation. However, conventional SiC aerogels assembled from rigid nanoparticle-chain skeletons are intrinsically brittle and lack reversible deformability, limiting their use under complex service conditions. Herein, inspired by the heterogeneous trunk-flower-cluster architecture of kapok trees, a biomimetic flexible SiC/SiOx microribbon aerogel (SMA) is developed via carbon-felt-template-assisted in situ reac
