Facial Emotion Recognition Ability in Patients with Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Observing others facial expressions to pain effects person's own facial expression empathetically. Fibromyalgia (FM) patients can be more sensitive to negative moods. We hypothesize that fibromyalgia patient recognize negative emotions more than positive emotions. METHOD: . Thirty one patients who met the classification criteria of FM according to American College of Rheumatology 1990 were included to the study. Age and sex matched 24 healthy woman included as a control group. All of the participants full filled the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Beck Depression Inventory

Dopamine and light: effects on facial emotion recognition.

Bright light can affect mood states and social behaviours. Here, we tested potential interacting effects of light and dopamine on facial emotion recognition. Participants were 32 women with subsyndromal seasonal affective disorder tested in either a bright (3000 lux) or dim light (10 lux) environment. Each participant completed two test days, one following the ingestion of a phenylalanine/tyrosine-deficient mixture and one with a nutritionally balanced control mixture, both administered double blind in a randomised order. Approximately four hours post-ingestion participants completed a self-re

[Neurobiological basis of human recognition of facial emotion].

In the review of modern data and ideas concerning the neurophysiological mechanisms and morphological foundations of the most essential communicative function of humans and monkeys, that of recognition of faces and their emotional expressions, the attention is focussed on its dynamic realization and structural provision. On the basis of literature data about hemodynamic and metabolic mapping of the brain the author analyses the role of different zones of the ventral and dorsal visual cortical pathway, the frontal neocortex and amigdala in the facial features processing, as well as the specific

Brain potentials reveal covert facial recognition in prosopagnosia.

Brain potentials were recorded in a prosopagnosic patient, in response to familiar and unfamiliar faces he was asked to recognize. The amplitude of the P300 component was found to be an inverse function of probability for each category of faces despite the patient's inability to consciously recognize the familiarity of these faces. In addition, P300 latency varied from 700 to 800 msec according to the familiarity of the faces, and P300 scalp location was different as a function of faces probability and overt recognition. The results imply that covert facial recognition may be evidenced in usin

A Cross-Modal Network for Facial Expression Recognition.

Deep neural networks enriched with structural information have been widely employed for facial expression recognition tasks. However, these methods often depend on hierarchical information rather than face property to finish expression recognition. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal network with strong biological and structural information for facial expression recognition (CMNet). CMNet can respectively learn expression information via face symmetry on a whole face, left and right half faces to extract complementary facial features. To prevent negative effect of biological and structural

Facial and Emotion Recognition Deficits in Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease of autoimmune etiology and chronic evolution. In addition to the muscle weakness and fatigue that characterize MG, in some studies patients show an inferior performance in cognitive tasks and difficulties in recognizing basic emotions from facial expressions. However, it remains unclear if these difficulties are due to anxious-depressive symptoms that these patients present or related to cognitive abilities, such as facial recognition. This study had a descriptive cross-sectional design with a sample of 92 participants, 52 patients with MG and

Facial Emotion Recognition and Executive Functions in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to accurately identify facial expressions of emotions is crucial in human interaction. Although a previous study suggested deficient emotional face recognition in patients with fibromyalgia, not much is known about the origin of this impairment. Against this background, the present study investigated the role of executive functions. Executive functions refer to cognitive control mechanisms enabling implementation and coordination of basic mental operations. Deficits in this domain are prevalent in fibromyalgia. METHODS: Fifty-two fibromyalgia patients and thirty-two hea

Neuroticism and facial emotion recognition in healthy adults.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to examine whether healthy individuals with higher levels of neuroticism, a robust independent predictor of psychopathology, exhibit altered facial emotion recognition performance. METHODS: Facial emotion recognition accuracy was investigated in 104 healthy adults using the Degraded Facial Affect Recognition Task (DFAR). Participants' degree of neuroticism was estimated using neuroticism scales extracted from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. RESULTS: A significant negative correlation between the degree of

Recognition of facial expressions of emotion in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Whether patients with panic disorder behave differently or not when recognizing the facial expressions of emotion remains unsettled. SAMPLING AND METHODS: We tested 21 outpatients with panic disorder and 34 healthy subjects, with a photo set from the Matsumoto and Ekman Japanese and Caucasian facial expressions of emotion, which includes anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. RESULTS: Compared to the healthy subjects, patients showed lower accuracies when recognizing disgust and fear, but a higher accuracy when recognizing surprise. CONCLUSIONS: These

Recognition of facial expressions in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Sprengelmeyer et al. [Sprengelmeyer, R., Young, A. W., Pundt, I., Sprengelmeyer, A., Calder, A. J., Berrios, G., et al. (1997). Disgust implicated in obsessive-compulsive disorder. Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, 264, 1767-1773] found that patients with OCD showed severely impaired recognition of facial expressions of disgust. This result has potential to provide a unique window into the psychopathology of OCD, but several published attempts to replicate this finding have failed. The current study compared OCD patients to normal controls and panic disorder patients on ability to re

Facial expression and sex recognition in schizophrenia and depression.

BACKGROUND: Impaired facial expression recognition in schizophrenia patients contributes to abnormal social functioning and may predict functional outcome in these patients. Facial expression processing involves individual neural networks that have been shown to malfunction in schizophrenia. Whether these patients have a selective deficit in facial expression recognition or a more global impairment in face processing remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether patients with schizophrenia exhibit a selective impairment in facial emotional expression recognition, compared with pati

Pediatric anxiety associated with altered facial emotion recognition.

Multiple psychiatric disorders are associated with difficulties in facial emotion recognition. However, generalized anxiety disorder may be associated with more accurate recognition of others' emotional expressions, particularly expressions of happiness and fear, which index safety and threat. Children aged 9-14 from a community sample (N = 601) completed a facial emotion labeling task. Children's symptoms of depressive and anxiety syndromes were assessed by self- and parent-report. Elevated symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder were associated with more accurate facial emotion recognition

Neuroanatomical substrates involved in unrelated false facial recognition.

Identifying faces is a process central for social interaction and a relevant factor in eyewitness theory. False recognition is a critical mistake during an eyewitness's identification scenario because it can lead to a wrongful conviction. Previous studies have described neural areas related to false facial recognition using the standard Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, triggering related false recognition. Nonetheless, misidentification of faces without trying to elicit false memories (unrelated false recognition) in a police lineup could involve different cognitive processes, and dist

Assessing facial weakness in myasthenia gravis with facial recognition software and deep learning.

OBJECTIVE: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease leading to fatigable muscle weakness. Extra-ocular and bulbar muscles are most commonly affected. We aimed to investigate whether facial weakness can be quantified automatically and used for diagnosis and disease monitoring. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed video recordings of 70 MG patients and 69 healthy controls (HC) with two different methods. Facial weakness was first quantified with facial expression recognition software. Subsequently, a deep learning (DL) computer model was trained for the classification of d

Facial Emotion Recognition in Patients with Post-Paralytic Facial Synkinesis-A Present Competence.

Facial palsy is a movement disorder with impacts on verbal and nonverbal communication. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of post-paralytic facial synkinesis on facial emotion recognition. In a prospective cross-sectional study, we compared facial emotion recognition between n = 30 patients with post-paralytic facial synkinesis (mean disease time: 1581 ± 1237 days) and n = 30 healthy controls matched in sex, age, and education level. Facial emotion recognition was measured by the Myfacetraining Program. As an intra-individual control condition, auditory emotion recognition wa

Intact recognition of facial expression, gender, and age in patients with impaired recognition of face identity.

We conducted a series of experiments to assess the ability to recognize the meaning of facial expressions, gender, and age in four patients with severe impairments of the recognition of facial identity. In three patients the recognition of face identity could be dissociated from that of facial expression, age, and gender. In one, all forms of face recognition were impaired. Thus, a given lesion may preclude one type of recognition but not another. We conclude that (1) the cognitive demands posed by different forms of recognition are met at different processing levels, and (2) different levels

Novel evaluation method for facial nerve palsy using 3D facial recognition system in iPhone.

OBJECTIVE: While subjective methods like the Yanagihara system and the House-Brackmann system are standard in evaluating facial paralysis, they are limited by intra- and inter-observer variability. Meanwhile, quantitative objective methods such as electroneurography and electromyography are time-consuming. Our aim was to introduce a swift, objective, and quantitative method for evaluating facial movements. METHODS: We developed an application software (app) that utilizes the facial recognition functionality of the iPhone (Apple Inc., Cupertino, USA) for facial movement evaluation. This app le

Facial Muscle Activity Recognition with Reconfigurable Differential Stethoscope-Microphones.

Many human activities and states are related to the facial muscles' actions: from the expression of emotions, stress, and non-verbal communication through health-related actions, such as coughing and sneezing to nutrition and drinking. In this work, we describe, in detail, the design and evaluation of a wearable system for facial muscle activity monitoring based on a re-configurable differential array of stethoscope-microphones. In our system, six stethoscopes are placed at locations that could easily be integrated into the frame of smart glasses. The paper describes the detailed hardware desi
