Patients suffering from this disorder mimic symptoms of diseases and seek medical procedures and operations. We present a case of a patient who underwent a thorough investigation for unexplained persistent hypoglycemia. According to the algorithm approach to the non-diabetic patient, we measured insulin and c-peptide plasma levels while glucose levels were low and looked for sulphonylurea, blood and urine traces. Following the above, an endoscopic ultrasound demonstrated a small pancreatic lesion and an explorative laparotomy was performed to detect an insulinoma. This procedure was complicate

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 23-year-old woman was admitted to the department of rheumatology for detailed diagnostic tests for a suspected immune deficiency. Over the past 3 years, she has had repeated unexplained febrile episodes and impaired wound healing, which required permanent antibiotic treatment.
INVESTIGATIONS AND DIAGNOSIS: Extensive tests initially showed no definitively diagnostic findings. Based on various clinical and inconsistencies in biochemic tests, the suspicion of a self-inflicted cause increased. In several interviews with a psychologist of the psychosomatic consult

Three women aged 18, 30 and 21, were admitted with complaints of reflex sympathetic dystrophy. These patients were caught at inducing their symptoms. Factitious disorders may be more common and serious than expected. It is suggested to include this diagnosis routinely in the differential diagnosis when dealing with inexplicable complaints, symptoms or therapy resistance. If factitious disorders are diagnosed it is advised to confront the patients. This is important in order to limit further iatrogenic damage to the patient. It also allows the physician to inform other doctors. After confrontat

Few signs are more ominous than the dilated pupil which is unreactive to light. The deliberate use of this fact and the simulation of other neurologic signs to enhance the aura of a serious illness will often expose a patient to hazardous procedures. A patient with Munchausen's Disorder who made unsuccessful attempts to simulate a neurological emergency is presented. A thorough knowledge of the pathophysiology of neurologic disease will enable the physician to detect the possibility of malingering when confronted with this problem. A strong cholinergic solution will produce pupillary constrict

Ganser syndrome (GS) is one of afew eponyms that have survived in psychiatry until the present day. GS is a little-known and rare disorder. It is most often described as a response to a stressor (e.g. incarceration), that is why it is an important issue in forensic psychiatry. Organic causes are taken into consideration. The basic symptoms of the syndrome are: approximate answers, visual and auditory hallucinations, clouding of consciousness and conversion symptoms. Additionally, patients may perform activities in an awry manner and suffer from insensitivity to painful stimuli.GS is usually ac

Factitious disorder is a psychiatric disorder in which sufferers intentionally fabricate physical or psychological symptoms in order to assume the role of the patient, without any obvious gain. We present a case of a 23-year-old female with chronic urticaria who presented with dyspnea, dysphasia, mild generalized erythema, abdominal cramps, and headache. She was tachypneic and hypotensive. This was her third admission with similar symptoms within the last 7 months. Tryptase, complement, anti-SM/RNP, Sjogren, Scl-70, C3, and C4 were negative. Computed tomography-guided bone marrow biopsy showed

BACKGROUND: Factitious disorder is a rare condition that is important to recognise and treat appropriately. Patients with eating disorders can present seeking care for self-induced illnesses such as complications of purging and deliberate self-harm, the origins of which may not be disclosed by the patient. Rarely, patients will also present self-reporting a history of an eating disorder where there is evidence that this has been fabricated or exaggerated.
OBJECTIVE: Critically evaluate the literature to better understand the presentation of factitious disorder co-occurring with eating disorde

BACKGROUND: Factitious disorders in dermatology consist of intentionally self-inflicted skin lesions that vary in morphology and distribution and occur on surfaces readily accessible to the patient's hands. They tend to be a chronic condition that waxes and wanes according to the circumstances of the patient's life. Patient management poses a particular challenge to the clinician and the prognosis is considered poor. The aetiopathogenesis of factitious disorders in dermatology is not completely understood. We present a case in which we suggested the occurrence of factitious behaviour during a

The factitious disorders (FDs) include a large group of dermatological conditions characterized by skin lesions that patients themselves self-inflict but deny their active participation. FDs usually represent a diagnostic challenge, and their therapeutic management is usually based on a multidisciplinary approach because most FRD patients also suffer from undiagnosed behavior and personality disorders. We report two cases of FD: one patient that was suffering from severe depression and induced third-degree chemical burns on his own lower limbs, and another patient affected by obsessive-compuls

PURPOSE: To improve our understanding of factitious hand disorders with a review of our experience over 29 years in a multidisciplinary hand center.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify workers' compensation patients treated for factitious hand disorders in the multidisciplinary hand center between January 1981 and September 2010. Multidisciplinary evaluation at this center involved evaluation by hand surgeons, occupational therapists, and psychologists. Data collected include age, sex, race, educational level, clinical presentation, number of diagnostic tests, numb

This report describes the uncommon problem of a female patient diagnosed with an eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, who reported self-mutilating dental factitious behavior. The case presents a serious diagnostic and management problem. Notwithstanding the clinical appearance of the dentition, a thorough medical-dental history was essential for this uncommon diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Although a variety of presentations have been described in the literature, the true prevalence of factitious disorder, also commonly known as Münchausen syndrome, and factitious disorder-by-proxy in pregnancy is unknown. The authors present a unique case in which intrauterine fetal growth restriction was simulated through fabrication of prenatal records.
CASE: A 30-year-old woman, gravida 6 para 3113, was transferred at 38 4/7 weeks of gestation for severe fetal growth restriction. The clinic listed in the patient-provided prenatal record was contacted to obtain original ultrasono

Factitious disorder imposed on self (FDIS) is a mental disorder characterized by conscious manipulative behavior from patients with no clearly identifiable external objective. It affects subjects with a wide range of characteristics, only some of whom fit the stereotypical profile of the young female working in the health sector. It can take the form of a variety of symptoms or clinical signs, and is likely to involve all specialties. Munchausen syndrome is a particular form of FDIS, more prevalent in men and marked by its severity. Psychiatric comorbidities are common in patients with FDIS. D

Patients with factitious disorder typically present with signs or symptoms suggesting a medical problem, but which transpire to be self-induced or fabricated. Repeated investigations and treatments are often carried out to no avail before this possibility is considered. In this case, a 51-year-old female presented to the oral and maxillofacial surgery unit with toothache and a facial rash. Following admission to hospital a range of investigations were performed, and a tooth was extracted. Judicious attention by nursing staff led to the discovery that the patient had been applying make-up to mi

Malingering and factitious disorder (Münchausen-syndrome) has not been reported as a manifestation of a mitochondrial-disorder (MID). Here, we report a 46 years-old female with a MID due to a combined complex I-IV defect, manifesting in the cerebrum, muscle, bone marrow, kidneys, and the endocrine glands. Myopathy showed up as myalgia, easy fatigability, ptosis, and abnormal muscle biopsy. Endocrine involvement manifested as short stature and thyroid dysfunction. Involvement of the kidneys manifested as mild Fanconi syndrome. Bone marrow affection resulted in iron-deficient, chronic anemia wit

Fournier's gangrene is a severe polymicrobial necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal, genital, or perianal regions. The classic presentation is severe pain and swelling with systemic signs. Crepitus and cutaneous necrosis are often seen. Characteristic CT findings include subcutaneous gas and inflammatory stranding. Unless treated aggressively, patients can rapidly become septic and die. Factitious Disorder is the falsification of one's own of medical or psychological signs and symptoms. Many deceptive methods have been described, from falsely reporting physical or psychological symptoms, to ma

The primary aims are to consider whether a range of paternalistic medical interventions can be justified in the treatment of factitious disorder (FD) and to show that the particularities of FD and its management make it an ideal phenomenon to highlight the difficulties of balancing respect for self-determination, responsibility and duty of care in psychiatry. FD is usually classified as a mental disorder involving deliberate and hidden feigning or inducement of illness, in order to achieve patient status. Both the nature of the disorder and the approach to treatment are controversial and under

Self-mutilation in the context of factitious disorder can lead to prolonged and complicated treatment in every medical field. Because of a prevalence of 1-5% in hospitalised patients, it is important to be aware of this disorder to protect patients from self- and foreign-induced harm. Often the patient history gives important hints. The different manifestations of this disorder, the specific doctor-patient relationship, several techniques of confrontation and current treatment are presented. Clinical cases from the fields of hand and plastic surgery are presented.

BACKGROUND: The factitious disorders, more commonly known as pathomimia, are mainly expressed as organic symptoms voluntarily induced by the patient. Patients suffering from these disorders do not seek to obtain immediate secondary benefits, contrary to simulation. They send the physician a challenge, sometimes by means of self-mutilation, or exposure to a vital risk. Their objective is to raise the interest and the mobilization of the medical community. The patient will develop intense relationships with the medical staff, technically mobilized as well as emotionally, as far as the factitious
