Relation of family responsibilities and gender to the productivity and career satisfaction of medical faculty.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that female faculty publish less, have slower career progress, and generally have a more difficult time in academic careers than male faculty. The relation of family (dependent) responsibilities to gender and academic productivity is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To describe dependent responsibilities by gender and to identify their relation to the aspirations, goals, rate of progress, academic productivity, and career satisfaction of male and female medical school faculty. DESIGN: 177-item survey questionnaire. SETTING: 24 randomly selected medical schools in the conti

Health status in the Caribbean. Has the faculty of medical sciences made a difference?

The Faculty of Medical Sciences has contributed to improvements in health status in the Caribbean through its research, training, and service and outreach programmes. Basic and applied research has yielded important scientific data and information that has guided health care, resulting in decreases in morbidity and mortality. Physicians graduating from its undergraduate programme and successfully completing its graduate programmes, and nurses and other professionals trained in the Faculty, are widely dispersed throughout the Caribbean and, together with Faculty staff members, have collaborated

Current Status of Generative Artificial Intelligence Utilization in Medical Education: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Medical Students and Faculty.

INTRODUCTION: Generative artificial intelligence (gAI), particularly large language models such as ChatGPT, is rapidly transforming various sectors, including medical education. Despite increasing interest, few studies have investigated how gAI is actually used in medical education settings, especially in Japan. This study aimed to assess the current use of gAI among medical students and faculty members, and to compare gAI usage patterns and attitudes between these two groups. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from April to May 2025 at the Oita University Faculty of Medicine. A

Assessment in competency-based medical education for anesthesiology: validity evidence, equity, and faculty readiness.

Competency-based medical education (CBME) is driving a paradigm shift in anesthesiology graduate medical education, moving from fixed-duration training to assessment-centered models. This narrative review aims to synthesize the sources of validity evidence for existing assessment tools (milestones, entrustable professional activities, and workplace-based assessments), equity threats during evaluation and their intervention strategies, and the impact of faculty readiness on assessment quality. Informed by the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles as a quality-appraisal instrumen

Building interoperability early: international faculty perspectives on multinational military medical education in undergraduate training.

INTRODUCTION: As military operations increasingly rely on coalition partnerships, interoperability has become a core competency for medical readiness. Traditionally emphasised in postgraduate or deployment settings, earlier integration of interoperability-focused training in undergraduate medical education (UME) may better prepare physicians for coalition environments. Simulation-based education (SBE) offers an effective platform for developing shared understanding, communication, and trust within multinational teams, with multinational faculty informing best practices in programme design and

An Innovative Model for Graduate Medical Education Faculty Development Through Physician-in-Training Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Faculty development is a core requirement for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency programs. Successfully delivering content to faculty can be challenging. This pilot study aimed to assess expert-developed sessions delivered by resident physicians to faculty at the completion of their clinical rotations. METHODS: A prospective cohort project was conducted, involving precepting faculty and resident physicians in a dermatology residency program. Each resident, at the end of their rotation, delivered a faculty development program to their

Strategic vulnerability on mitigating malicious academic envy and enhancing institutional resilience in medical faculty.

Academic envy, particularly its malicious form, constitutes a silent epidemic that destabilizes medical faculty through counterproductive work behaviours and diminished psychological well-being. This review addresses the "zero-sum" culture inherent in competitive medical hierarchies by proposing Strategic Vulnerability as an institutional intervention. Strategic Vulnerability advocates structured sharing of navigated professional struggles by senior faculty. This is a mentoring strategy promoting competent humility, psychological safety, and benign rather than malicious envy. The proposed "Sca

"Ardor and diligence": Quantifying the faculty effort needed in emergency medicine graduate medical education.

OBJECTIVES: Regulatory requirements around protected faculty effort to support graduate medical education (GME) programs have changed. The amount of labor required to run a GME program is unknown. We sought to describe the work performed by program leadership and core faculty in emergency medicine (EM). METHODS: We performed a prospective survey study of core faculty in EM. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire followed by quarterly time surveys, covering activities in eight domains: evaluation, teaching and education, scholarly activity, service, interview/recruitment, clinical

Factors contributing to the burnout of the faculties of a medical university in Iran: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Faculty members confront a variety of obstacles over time, the most recent of which is the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, which may increase their vulnerability to burnout (BO). This study aims to examine BO in medical school faculties, as well as the factors that lead to BO and well-being in them. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 using online questionnaires completed by 222 faculty members of a medical university in Iran. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) and the Well-being index (WBI) were used. Additionally, we g

A Consensus Based Research Agenda for Faculty and Learner Development in Competency Based Medical Education.

Competency based medical education (CBME) is an outcome-driven training model that assesses individual learners based on competencies and observable abilities. Although implementation of competencies and milestones by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education has provided some ground work, full adoption of CBME is in its infancy in emergency medicine. Successful implementation of CBME will require dedicated attention to faculty and learner development; however, there is limited data or best practices available for guidance. To address this need, the Society of Academic Emergency

Trainee research requirements of Australasian medical colleges: How does the Faculty of Radiation Oncology compare?

INTRODUCTION: The Faculty of Radiation Oncology (FRO) of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) currently allows several pathways for trainees to satisfy its mandatory original research requirement. In practice, the majority need to have a manuscript 'accepted to peer review' by one of five specified radiation oncology (RO) journals before being eligible to sit for the final examination. The purpose of this work was to determine the corresponding trainee research requirements of the other Australasian medical colleges and compare them with FRO as a companion to a

A USAID-sponsored family planning project called "FALAH" (Family Advancement for Life and Health), implemented in 20 districts of Pakistan, aimed to lower unmet need for family planning by improving access to services. To enhance the quality of care offered by the public health system, the FALAH project trained 10,534 facility-based health care providers, managers, and medical college faculty members to offer client-centered family planning services, which included a module to explain the Islamic viewpoint on family planning developed through an iterative process involving religious scholars a
