Child murder committed by severely mentally III mothers: an examination of mothers found not guilty by reason of insanity. 2005 Honorable Mention/Richard Rosner Award for the best paper by a fellow in forensic psychiatry or forensic psychology.

Forensic hospital records of 39 severely mentally ill mothers adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity for filicide (child murder by parents) were analyzed to describe characteristics preceding this tragedy and to suggest prevention strategies. Almost three-quarters of the mothers (72%) had previous mental health treatment. Over two thirds (69%) of the mothers were experiencing auditory hallucinations, most frequently command hallucinations, and half (49%) were depressed at the time of the offense. Over one third (38%) of the filicides occurred during pregnancy or the postpartum period, an

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Relationship With Psychological Disorders and Violent Criminal Behaviour Within a Forensic Psychiatric Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 that may undermine a child's sense of safety, stability and attachment. ACEs can have lifelong consequences, including an elevated risk of developing psychological disorders and an increased likelihood of engaging in delinquent or violent behaviour later in life. Clinical practice suggests that many forensic psychiatric patients have a history of ACEs, but scientific research on ACEs within this population remains limited. AIM: To study the prevalence of ACEs before the age of 18 within a larg

Ethical tensions in forensic psychological practice: experiences of New Zealand psychologists in an increasingly risk-averse legislative context.

Forensic psychological practice occurs at the interface between the criminal justice and mental health systems, creating ethical tensions described comprehensively in theoretical literature. However, little is known about the experiences of psychologists in navigating their roles. This qualitative study aimed to explore psychologists' experiences of ethical tensions working with people who have offended. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 psychologists practising in Aotearoa New Zealand. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results highlighted that considerations of risk

Psychological mechanisms of revenge and revenge ideations in family homicide: results from qualitative research of forensic assessment reports.

Our aim was to find out which social and psychological factors characterize forensic psychiatric patients who have committed family homicide with revenge as a reason as compared to subjects who committed family homicide with other motives. Qualitative research was carried out on the basis of pre-trial forensic assessment reports of existing cases (N=20), divided between Revenge and No-Revenge cases. In case of revenge, violence was almost always a sort of settling of an interpersonal score. Psychotic symptomatology was absent in the Revenge cases, personality problems (particularly borderline

Virtual reality-assisted psychological treatment of aggression for violent offenders: a pilot descriptive case series in maximum-security forensic psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive behaviour remains a major clinical challenge in forensic psychiatric care, and effective interventions targeting aggression are limited. Virtual Reality Aggression Prevention Treatment (VRAPT) is a manualized cognitive behavioural intervention that uses immersive virtual reality to provide individualized exposure to emotionally provocative interpersonal situations. Following a previous randomized controlled trial in Dutch forensic psychiatric care, the VRAPT protocol was revised to strengthen its theoretical foundation and therapeutic content. This pilot descriptive case

Rule-Based Versus Generative Extraction of Psychological Symptoms From Forensic Medical Certificates: A Feasibility Study in the French ORFeAD Network.

Forensic medical certificates for victims of interpersonal violence describe psychological symptoms in unstructured prose, rarely explicit and requiring inference. To assess the feasibility of two extraction pipelines-rule-based and a locally served generative large language model-in a French multicentric forensic network, and to identify variables usable without human verification. 110 randomly selected 2021 certificates from 12 ORFeAD units were processed by both pipelines: rule-based (segmentation, lexicons, regular expressions, negation detection) and generative (Llama 3 8B, 4-bit, Ollama,

The psychological health of forensic investigators following mass fatality incidents: a cross-sectional study 9 months after the Jeju Air crash in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Following the Jeju Air crash in Muan (South Korea) on December 29, 2024, resulting in 179 fatalities, forensic investigators (FIs) were exposed to traumatic scenes while performing disaster victim identification (DVI) procedures. FIs are known to be at significant risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues due to their routine exposure to traumatic scenes. Despite its clinical significance, there remains a paucity of empirical research quantitatively evaluating the psychological ramifications of DVI procedures and associated occupational stresso

Lying in the medicolegal field: Malingering and psychodiagnostic assessment.

The simulation of mental illness, so-called "Malingering", is a very difficult phenomenon for professionals to identify when making an assessment, especially in the medicolegal and forensic psychology and psychiatry fields. When malingering, the subject implements strategies that mimic the symptoms related to a possible psychiatric disease, with the aim of misleading the operator. It is necessary, therefore, to elicit a complete medical history and make a close clinical examination and, especially, to be able to rely on appropriate diagnostic tools. Another important aspect, in the legal medic

[Diagnostic, forensic and therapeutic-ethical aspects of false memory of sexual abuse induced by psychotherapy].

This article examines the risk of false memories induced by psychotherapy with special regard to sexual abuse. Current psychological constructs based on depth psychology are reviewed critically. The multitude of psychological disorders connected with sexual abuse in recent time and a subjectivistic misunderstanding of empathy frequently lead sometimes to uncritical acceptance of anamnestic reports about sexual abuse. Thus, the question of what really happened often is risen not before forensic appraisals. It can be shown that the descriptive psychiatric view and depth psychological oriented co

Epilepsy, violence, and crime. A historical analysis.

In the 19th and early 20th century, epilepsy was one of the most investigated disorders in forensic psychiatry and psychology. The possible subsidiary symptoms of epilepsy (such as temporal confusion, alterations of consciousness, or increased aggression) played pivotal roles in early forensic and criminal psychological theories that aimed to underscore the problematic medical, social and legal status of epileptic criminals. These criminals were considered extremely violent and capable of committing sudden, brutal acts. Although the theory of "epileptic criminality" was refuted due to 20th-cen

New perspectives in the legal psychiatry of cocaine-related crimes.

The legal criteria for the insanity defense as it applies to cocaine-related crimes remains elusive because of cocaine's unique spectrum of effects on human thought and action. This paper discusses the literature relevant to cocaine and forensic psychiatry/psychology, and summarizes the results of a survey of forensic psychiatrists on the topic of drug-induced psychosis. A conceptual framework is posited for the expert witness to distinguish the separable effects of cocaine on human behavior and to clarify their relationship to criminal responsibility.

[Training in forensic psychiatry: comparative issues towards a rethinking of the Portuguese model].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Forensic psychiatry has experienced a significant development in the last few decades. Several mechanisms underlie this shift, including deinstitutionalization of mental health patients and extraordinary progress in neurosciences, imaging technologies and psychology, just no name a few. This development has put in evidence specific needs for training and education. A review and comparison of forensic psychiatry training in several European countries, U.S.A. and Brazil is made. METHODS: A mixed approach was used, including a) systematic literature review (Pubmed search, 19

The Problem No One is Talking About: Forensic Evaluators' Lack of Familiarity with Dimensional Approaches to Personality and Psychopathology.

Historically, forensic evaluators have relied heavily upon various editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders when rendering psycholegal opinions. The field of mental health is increasing moving toward dimensional models of personality and psychopathology in lieu of traditional DSM categorical models, though the domains of forensic psychology and psychiatry have been slow to make this transition. The current study therefore sought to examine forensic evaluators' familiarity with dimensional approaches to personality and psychopathology, namely the Alternative DSM-5 M

Personality assessment inventory (PAI) in forensic and correctional settings: A comprehensive review.

As Forensic Psychology continues to expand as an independent field, professionals regularly resort to psychological assessment tools to assess people involved within the justice system. The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is a 344-item, self-report inventory that aims to provide meaningful information for diagnosis and clinical decision-making, specifically relating to psychopathology, personality, and psychosocial environment. Its applicability in forensic settings has been increasingly recognized on account of its benefits in comparison to other self-report inventories (e.g., MMPI-2,

A psychosocial approach in humanitarian forensic action: The Latin American perspective.

Forensic humanitarian action is aimed at alleviating suffering and maintaining human dignity, with the victims and their families at the core. International recommendations emphasize the importance of psychological support and psychosocial work as an integral part of forensic investigations into missing persons. Psychosocial action does not simply refer to emotional support but is based on the idea of the individual being the holder of rights, encouraging decision taking, affirming actions, and elaborating personal and collective histories. In this framework, forensics and psychosocial science

Recognizing and mitigating the effects of occupational exposure to traumatic death in forensic anthropology.

Forensic anthropologists regularly come into direct contact with decedents affected by skeletal trauma, and consequently can experience high levels of indirect trauma exposure. However, beyond their nominal inclusion in self-reported surveys of the general forensic science population, there have been few empirical research studies chronicling the outcomes experienced from indirect traumatic stress in forensic anthropologists, including their risk for the development of acute and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSDs). There have been even fewer educational and training efforts aimed at recogn

Virtual reality applications for diagnosis, risk assessment and therapy of child abusers.

Despite the successful application of virtual reality (VR) in a wide variety of mental disorders and the obvious potentials that VR provides, the use of VR in the context of criminology and forensic psychology is sparse. For forensic mental health professionals, VR provides some advantages that outrun general advantages of VR, e.g., ecological validity and controllability of social situations. Most important seems to be the unique possibility to expose offenders and to train coping skills in virtual situations, which are able to elicit disorder-relevant behavior-without endangering others. VR

The neurobiology of antisocial behavior in adolescence; current knowledge and relevance for youth forensic clinical practice.

Antisocial behavior in adolescents is generally seen as a neurodevelopmental problem; however, in spite of increasing knowledge on the neurobiology of persistent antisocial behavior, conduct disorders, and psychopathic traits, this knowledge is hardly used in clinical practice. The aim of this review is to give an overview of current research on the neurobiology of antisocial behavior in adolescents and to discuss how this knowledge can be translated to youth forensic clinical practice. First, an overview of recent literature on genetics, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, neurophysiology/neuroend
