A Laboratory Assessment of 120 Air Pollutant Emissions from Biomass and Fossil Fuel Cookstoves.

Cookstoves emit many pollutants that are harmful to human health and the environment. However, most of the existing scientific literature focuses on fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO). We present an extensive data set of speciated air pollution emissions from wood, charcoal, kerosene, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookstoves. One-hundred and twenty gas- and particle-phase constituents-including organic carbon, elemental carbon (EC), ultrafine particles (10-100 nm), inorganic ions, carbohydrates, and volatile/semivolatile organic compounds (e.g., alkanes, alkenes, alky

The 2022 report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change: health at the mercy of fossil fuels.

UNLABELLED: The 2022 report of the Lancet Countdown is published as the world confronts profound and concurrent systemic shocks. Countries and health systems continue to contend with the health, social, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a persistent fossil fuel overdependence has pushed the world into global energy and cost-of-living crises. As these crises unfold, climate change escalates unabated. Its worsening impacts are increasingly affecting the foundations of human health and wellbeing, exacerbating the vulnerability of the world’s pop

The future of airborne sulfur-containing particles in the absence of fossil fuel sulfur dioxide emissions.

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4), formed from oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitted during fossil fuel combustion, is a major precursor of new airborne particles, which have well-documented detrimental effects on health, air quality, and climate. Another precursor is methanesulfonic acid (MSA), produced simultaneously with SO2 during the atmospheric oxidation of organosulfur compounds (OSCs), such as dimethyl sulfide. In the present work, a multidisciplinary approach is used to examine how contributions of H2SO4 and MSA to particle formation will change in a large coastal urban area as anthropogenic

Selective N-pyridinium derivatization for molecular characterization of neutral oxygenated compounds in fossil fuels by high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Neutral oxygenated compounds (NOCs), including alcohols and ketones, constitute one of the most analytically challenging classes of molecules in the molecular characterization of fossil fuels, largely owing to the absence of selective analytical methods capable of detecting them at trace concentrations. Here, we report a selective chemical derivatization strategy using deuterated pyridine (D₅-pyridine) and thionyl chloride (SOCl2) to convert alcohols and ketones into N-alkylpyridinium quaternary ammonium salts. The resulting derivatives exhibit greatly enhanced ionization response in positive-

Materializing Exposure: Developing an Indexical Method to Visualize Health Hazards Related to Fossil Fuel Extraction.

How can STS researchers collaborate with communities to design environmental monitoring devices that more effectively express their experiences and address gaps in regulation? This paper describes and shows the results of a novel method of visualizing environmental emissions of corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exposure using photographic paper. H2S is a neurotoxic and flammable gas that smells like rotten eggs and is frequently associated with oil and natural gas extraction. Communities living with oil and gas development in Wyoming report odors of rotten eggs and describe sympto

Large emission mitigation potential from sequencing fossil fuel extraction infrastructure retirement in China.

China's fossil fuel infrastructure could lock in substantial emissions across both extraction and downstream use, making a well-defined phaseout strategy urgent for achieving carbon neutrality. We analyze the differences between the current retirement strategy and the proposed emission-oriented retirement sequencing strategy by quantifying the emission mitigation effect, employment benefit, and cost-saving advantage of strategies. We show that China's fossil fuel emissions totaled 9,850 MtCO2e in 2023 and are projected to reach 98.9-148.5 GtCO2e cumulatively during 2024-2050 under existing pla

The hydrogen-to-carbon mole perspective reveals cleanness and inequality of global and national fossil fuel transition.

Transition away from fossil fuels concerns both carbon and hydrogen as the main energy carriers in different hydrocarbons, but the current energy transition literature primarily emphasizes carbon, with limited attention to hydrogen embedded in fossil fuels. Here we introduce the index of Hydrogen-to-Carbon Mole Ratio (HCR) to measure the clean transition and inequality of global and national fossil fuel consumption, production, export, and import over nearly four decades (1980-2016). We show that the HCR reveals the cleanness of fossil fuel consumption and production falling behind those of im

Determination of transition metal ions in fossil fuel associated wastewaters using chelation ion chromatography.

This study outlines the development and subsequent validation of a method using chelation ion chromatography (CIC) pretreatment followed by traditional ion chromatography (IC) and post column UV/vis detection to measure transition metals in fossil fuel wastewaters, such as oil & gas (O&G) brines and coal mine drainage (CMD) waters. Measurement of transition metals is often an important characterization step in the research of environmental and energy systems. IC represents one way to measure these metals with the advantages of being versatile, simple and relatively low cost compared to other a

Air Quality and Health Impact of Future Fossil Fuel Use for Electricity Generation and Transport in Africa.

Africa has ambitious plans to address energy deficits and sustain economic growth with fossil fueled power plants. The continent is also experiencing faster population growth than anywhere else in the world that will lead to proliferation of vehicles. Here, we estimate air pollutant emissions in Africa from future (2030) electricity generation and transport. We find that annual emissions of two precursors of fine particles (PM2.5) hazardous to health, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), approximately double by 2030 relative to 2012, increasing from 2.5 to 5.5 Tg SO2 and 1.5 to 2.8

Nitrogen Isotope Composition of Thermally Produced NOx from Various Fossil-Fuel Combustion Sources.

The nitrogen stable isotope composition of NOx (δ(15)N-NOx) may be a useful indicator for NOx source partitioning, which would help constrain NOx source contributions in nitrogen deposition studies. However, there is large uncertainty in the δ(15)N-NOx values for anthropogenic sources other than on-road vehicles and coal-fired energy generating units. To this end, this study presents a broad analysis of δ(15)N-NOx from several fossil-fuel combustion sources that includes: airplanes, gasoline-powered vehicles not equipped with a three-way catalytic converter, lawn equipment, utility vehicles, u

Drop-In Capability of Solketal in Diesel and Gasoline Fuels Containing Biodiesel, HVO, Fossil Diesel, and Gasoline Based on Standard Physical and Chemical Fuel Properties.

This study evaluates the drop-in capability of solketal in terms of the physical and chemical parameters defined for diesel and gasoline fuels. To this end, miscibility gaps revealed that solketal is immiscible with pure hydrocarbons and lower aromatic fossil diesel fuel (18.84 wt %), while biodiesel acts as an effective solubilizer due to its amphiphilic structure. Solketal exhibited a significant influence on fuel polarity, as demonstrated by increases in permittivity (ε) and decreases in interfacial tension (it) (in binary blends with biodiesel: 15.7% (ε) and 43.6% (it); in ternary alkane-b

Sectoral foreign direct investment and environmental degradation: new insights from diversification of energy mix containing fossil fuels and renewable energy.

The objective of the study is to extend the existing literature by investigating the effects of foreign direct investment, gross domestic products and per capita and energy diversification on the nitrogen oxide emissions in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) by using annual data during the period 1992-2019. As per our knowledge, the present study is a first of its kind to examine the impact of a new energy diversification index, based on Herfindahl-Hirschman framework on pollution. This study has adopted a new quantile regression augmented method of moments, which is capable

Do environmental taxes reduce air pollution? Evidence from fossil-fuel power plants in China.

Taking environmental protection into consideration, China introduced the new Environmental Protection Tax Law in 2018, which levies taxes for pollutants with higher standards. The vast majority of existing studies have investigated the impacts of environmental taxes (ETs) at the city level or province level. In contrast, we estimate their effects on pollutant reductions for fossil-fuel power plants in 30 provinces in China. Our results show that ETs have positive effects on pollutant emission reductions compared with the pollution discharge fee policy. We provide empirical evidence that sulfur

Toward verifying fossil fuel CO2 emissions with the CMAQ model: motivation, model description and initial simulation.

UNLABELLED: Motivated by the question of whether and how a state-of-the-art regional chemical transport model (CTM) can facilitate characterization of CO2 spatiotemporal variability and verify CO2 fossil-fuel emissions, we for the first time applied the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model to simulate CO2. This paper presents methods, input data, and initial results for CO2 simulation using CMAQ over the contiguous United States in October 2007. Modeling experiments have been performed to understand the roles of fossil-fuel emissions, biosphere-atmosphere exchange, and meteorology in

Dramatic Lockdown Fossil Fuel CO2 Decrease Detected by Citizen Science-Supported Atmospheric Radiocarbon Observations.

COVID-19 lockdowns resulted in dramatic changes to fossil fuel CO2 emissions around the world, most prominently in the transportation sector. Yet travel restrictions also hampered observational data collection, making it difficult to evaluate emission changes as they occurred. To overcome this, we used a novel citizen science campaign to detect emission changes during lockdown and engage youth in climate science. Citizen scientists collected grass samples from their garden or local park, from which we analyzed the radiocarbon content to infer the recently added atmospheric fossil fuel CO2 mole

[Formation Potential of Ozone and Secondary Organic Aerosol of VOCs from Fossil Fuel Combustion in Lanzhou City].

With the rapid development of China's industry and the acceleration of urbanization, the massive use of fossil fuels has increased the concentration of air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the cities. However, there is little research on the environmental impact of volatile organic compounds from fossil fuel combustion emissions. In this paper, ozone formation potential(OFP)and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) of VOCs from fossil fuel combustion in Lanzhou city were calculated. The OFP and SOAFP of the cement i

Analysis of fossil fuel consumption and socioeconomic drivers of respiratory disease mortality in G7 countries: an ARDL and VAR model approach.

This study investigates the impact of environmental, social, and economic factors on air pollution and respiratory disease mortality in the G7 countries by autoregressive distributed lag and vector autoregressive models. The analyzed key variables include non-renewable energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, gross domestic product, urbanization, life expectancy, and public health expenditure. This study tested three hypotheses: (i) non-renewable energy use is associated with higher mortality from respiratory diseases, (ii) economic and demographic factors influence respiratory mortality
