Trauma and disavowal: looking at the history of psychoanalysis through the case of Karen Horney.

This article examines the history of psychoanalysis through the lens of disavowal, focusing on the case of Karen Horney, a prominent second-generation psychoanalyst whose contributions were largely excluded from the official history. By analyzing Freud's institutional and theoretical dominance, the article explores how dissenting voices like Horney's were marginalized through mechanisms akin to Ferenczi's concept of disavowal. The discussion highlights how the exclusion of Horney and others shaped the development of psychoanalytic theory and practice, particularly regarding gender and authorit

Expansion and Constraint in Freud's Contribution to Social Theory: Discussion of Nancy Chodorow's "Freud in his Psychosocial Generation: Durkheim, Simmel, Weber, and Du Bois".

This essay is an appreciation of the life and work of Nancy Chodorow, one of the most influential and insightful psychoanalytic sociologists of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Her critical feminist analysis-of mothering and gendering in general-integrated Ego Psychology, Object Relations Theory, developmental psychoanalysis, and structural-functional sociology, opening new visions, which she articulated throughout all of her work. That Chodorow was also a practicing analyst further distinguished her from most of her analytically-inflected academic colleagues. In discussing Chodorow's paper, Selig

[A heated controversy--already settled today?].

In the sexuological literature there was a strong argument about the seeming inequality of clitorial or vaginal orgasms for a long time. S. Freud characterized the clitoral orgasm as immature, infantile and noted that it should be transformed into the advanced, truly vaginal orgasm. In contrast, feministically-oriented authors proclaimed the clitoral orgasm the actual, mentally more advanced one. Using a psychological "orgasm test" both hypotheses are verified in a population of 422 orgastically experienced women. The result shows that both clitoral and vaginal orgasms are not differently felt

Unwrapping the Psychoanalytic Education; On Orienting Candidates with Freud.

This paper argues that, despite being highly educated, psychoanalytic candidates need a particular orientation to become students of the strange and offensive unconscious, to help them learn to work together in the pursuit of the repressed. In this paper, the author describes an 8-week introductory course she has cotaught for the past 5 years at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. As a kind of "Freud aperitivo course," it gives candidates something to nibble on to stimulate the appetite for depth and to stomach difficulties that arise. The rationale for such a course is based on F

The story of Freud's patient Anna von Lieben - as told by Anna von Lieben.

Anna von Lieben (Cäcilie M.) was treated for some 5 years by Sigmund Freud who discussed her case in Studies on Hysteria. This article presents an alternative view of the case based on the discovery of new primary material, principally, a handwritten corpus of confessional poetry by Anna herself. The poems were studied using a qualitative research methodology, interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), the findings of which were then further explored through the lens of her husband's unpublished diary entries. On this basis, it is suggested that Anna's ill-health appears to have been due

Effi Briest: The Uncanny, sexuality, and trauma.

Here the author draws on Theodor Fontane's 1895 novel Effi Briest to consider the links between Freud's paper "The Uncanny" and his elaboration of the trauma of sexuality and the après-coup. Conceptualizing trauma in contemporary clinical theory inevitably draws on the theory of the après-coup: the blow that is inflicted on the psyche when the impact of the early event is retranscribed at a later date. The author considers the trauma that Effi experiences, not the catastrophic trauma of death or assault but the deceptive trauma, is disguised as an unparalleled opportunity for Effi. Her story h

A Trans∗ Zapping of Psychoanalysis.

In France, transsexualism was introduced in psychoanalysis through the mediation of medicine. The statements of psychoanalysts on transgender people are considered as offensive by the people concerned. Since the 1970s, trans∗ people have refused to be objectified as "clinical cases" and have decided to "zap" psychoanalysis, the vehicle for a violent, discriminatory rhetoric redolent of psychiatry. Is a critical debate between the knowledge derived from the Freudian field and from the gay, lesbian, and trans∗ field possible in order to revamp the questionings on gender and sexuality? Can psycho

Between the Tale and the Dream: Sándor Ferenczi-Trauma and Dreams.

The analysis of the story "The Curse" by Canetti (1977; it could have been a dream) allowed us to address concepts such as early trauma in Ferenczi, trauma in Freud, the body as a register of deep pain that houses perhaps even deeper psychic pain. Trauma occupies a principal place. It is a real trauma that cannot be linked; it is split off. In this sense, Ferenczi proposes thinking about the constitution of the infantile ego as an extension of the adult ego, thus this ego can operate as a structuring or de-structuring of the early trauma. The narration of this story allows us to think about th

Unbridled! Thoughts on times of self-begetting and violence.

Mind is multi-levelled displaying an eons-long prehistory, while as Freud well knew civilization is new and frail: in biological evolution Thanatos long antecedes Eros. Complex intraspecies interchanges in higher animals proceeding by analogic communication give a firm place to Freudian Dingvorstellungen. Self-recognition and reflective thought come exceedingly late, in apes, requiring affectionate baby-mother mirroring. Deriving from inquiry on ego-dystonic neuroses, psychoanalysis must in the Age of Media deal with ego-syntonic pathologies sporting a demise of self-observation and self-refle

The concept of dissociation.

The concept of dissociation has been reviewed and redefined. It was also compared with other mental mechanisms. In the past, the process of dissociation and the content of the dissociation have often been lumped together although they are separate frames of reference. Moreover, very different psychic elements may be dissociated including memories, affects, and psychic structure. Dissociation is an important mental mechanism that plays a very significant role in people's adaptational efforts. In addition, dissociation is the underlying mechanism in a number of defense mechanisms. Repression, in

Homosexual panic: a review of its concept.

This paper traces the origin of the term "homosexual panic" when it was first described in 1920 to the Freudian bisexual theory of sexual development and the concepts of repressed and latent homosexuality, and questions the appropriateness of this term when used to diagnose as well as to describe different situations. Concerns are raised especially when dealing with conditions ranging from violent behaviour to outright psychotic episodes. Homosexual panic is also compared with pseudohomosexuality, and finally correlated with society's homophobic attitudes.

Freud and the use of iconography in curating his public profile.

Visual images of Freud abound in popular and psychoanalytic culture, though they have been largely bypassed without scrutiny in the literature. This neglect obscures a proper understanding of this important part of psychoanalytic iconography and in particular the genesis of Freud's drive (and that of early colleagues and other key stakeholders) to promote "brand-Freud" and psychoanalysis locally, nationally, and internationally. Offering the first in-depth exploration of this topic, the present article considers Freud's relation to his imaging, the functions of this in promoting recognition an

Freud's first article in French in 1893, the year of Charcot's death.

This article examines Sigmund Freud's first publication in French, written in 1893, the year of Jean-Martin Charcot's death. Following his stay at the Salpêtrière (1885-1886), Freud published an article on hysterical paralysis in the Archives of Neurology, appearing alongside Charcot's obituary. This publication marked a pivotal epistemological shift in Freud's intellectual trajectory from neurology to psychoanalysis. Influenced by Charcot's clinical demonstrations, Freud began distancing himself from strictly neurological explanations of hysteria in favor of psychological interpretations. His

Unpleasant Business: Rat, Jew, Payment, and Covenant in Freud's RAT Man.

Freud's repression of Judaism and its cultural markers from the published "Rat Man" case history has been noted but never satisfactorily explained. This elision can be interpreted using Freud's suggestion that the paradigmatic "rat" represents (among other things) a circumcised penis marking an intergenerational, covenantal exchange. When read against the case study as originally published, Freud's process notes for the Rat Man's treatment (the only set of such notes on a published case that Freud didn't destroy) suggest that Freud chose to sanitize the published version of explicitly Jewish c

A development of Freudian metapsychology for schizophrenia.

The author states that psychoanalysis has much to contribute to schizophrenia. Beginning with a development of Freudian metapsychology, he addresses the in-depth psychopathological study of a session (the first on the couch) with a schizophrenic patient who hears voices and feels that he is being watched. Since the symptoms appear at the level of the heard word and the visual image - key to Freudian metapsychology - he delineates a circuit for the word and one for the image, describing a blockage in both and the consequences of these. Furthermore, with regard to the patient's progress, he demo

[On suggestion and its related problems].

Recently, intensive discussions about dissociative disorders have led to the rediscovery of the psychology of P. Janet, that has been under the shadow of Freud's psychoanalysis. Nevertheless, psychiatry, "Schulpsychiatrie" in German, has still paid little attention to the suggestion with which Janet has occupied himself throughout his long career. In this paper, the author examined suggestion from another point of view other than psychodynamic. It is presented that Freud reduced suggestion to a specific relation between an active subject and a passive object, as his precursors, F.A. Mesmer and

[Not Available].

Positive programs in psychotherapy strive for progress, integration and coherence. However, an overly positive orientation carries the risk of flattening complexity, and assimilating contradictions. This idea is illustrated in more detail by use of the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis-3 (OPD-3). In the OPD-3, a high level of structural integration is conceptualized as a rather rigid construct, implying that a structurally mature person not only understands their inner life but also has it under control and is permanently capable of achieving levels of integration that ultimately seem un

A previously-untranslated report by Freud of a lecture on the mechanism of obsessional ideas and phobias.

This is an English translation of Freud's report of a lecture that he delivered in 1895 on the 'Mechanism of obsessional ideas and phobias'. The report was not included in the Standard Edition of Freud's psychological works, and nor was it included in any of the other collections of his writings. The lecture described in this report seems to have been derived directly from Freud's contemporaneous essay on 'Obsessions and phobias' (1895b). However there are a few discrepancies between the two, and these are discussed in the footnotes to the translation.
