Fusarium brain abscess. Case report.

The common soil fungus, Fusarium, is rarely pathogenic in man but occasionally causes serious disease, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. A case is reported of Fusarium brain abscess and meningitis occurring in a patient with chronic infectious mononucleosis syndrome and immunodeficiency. The patient died despite aspiration of the abscess and treatment with amphotericin B. This case demonstrates the importance of identifying the offending pathological organism through abscess aspiration in immunocompromised patients.

Genetic Diversity of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, the Fusarium Wilt Pathogen of Banana, in Ecuador.

The continued dispersal of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical race 4 (FocTR4), a quarantine soil-borne pathogen that kills banana, has placed this worldwide industry on alert and triggered enormous pressure on National Plant Protection (NPOs) agencies to limit new incursions. Accordingly, biosecurity plays an important role while long-term control strategies are developed. Aiming to strengthen the contingency response plan of Ecuador against FocTR4, a population biology study-including phylogenetics, mating type, vegetative compatibility group (VCG), and pathogenicity testing-was perfo

Effect of infection timing and chemotype of Fusarium asiaticum on fusarium head blight and mycotoxin accumulation in rice.

To confirm the most susceptible stage of Fusarium infection and evaluate the pathogenicity of different chemotypes of Fusarium isolates are essential for managing Fusarium head blight (FHB). Extensive research has been conducted on wheat and barley, while there has been limited studies in rice. A 2-year greenhouse experiment was conducted to reveal the effects of infection timing and chemotype of Fusarium asiaticum on FHB severity and mycotoxin accumulation in four rice varieties. The results showed that all the rice varieties could be infected at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days after anthesis (daa) b

Malignant Keratitis Caused by a Highly-Resistant Strain of Fusarium Tonkinense from the Fusarium Solani Complex.

Fusarium spp. are moulds ubiquitously distributed in nature and only occasionally pathogenic for humans. Species of the Fusarium solani complex are the predominant keratitis-inducing pathogens, because they are endowed with proper virulence factors. These fungi can adhere to the cornea creating a biofilm and, with the help of enzymes and cytotoxins, penetrate the cornea. Whereas an intact cornea is hardly able to be invaded by Fusarium spp. in spite of appropriate virulence factors, these opportunistic fungi may profit from predisposing conditions, for example mechanical injuries. This can lea

No to Neocosmospora: Phylogenomic and Practical Reasons for Continued Inclusion of the Fusarium solani Species Complex in the Genus Fusarium.

This article is to alert medical mycologists and infectious disease specialists of recent name changes of medically important species of the filamentous mold FusariumFusarium species can cause localized and life-threating infections in humans. Of the 70 Fusarium species that have been reported to cause infections, close to one-third are members of the Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC), and they collectively account for approximately two-thirds of all reported Fusarium infections. Many of these species were recently given scientific names for the first time by a research group in the Nethe

Adaptation of Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium dimerum to the specific aquatic environment provided by the water systems of hospitals.

Members of the Fusarium group were recently detected in water distribution systems of several hospitals in the world. An epidemiological investigation was conducted over 2 years in hospital buildings in Dijon and Nancy (France) and in non-hospital buildings in Dijon. The fungi were detected only within the water distribution systems of the hospital buildings and also, but at very low concentrations, in the urban water network of Nancy. All fungi were identified as Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) and Fusarium dimerum species complex (FDSC) by sequencing part of the translation elongat

Effect of salicylic acid on Fusarium graminearum, the major causal agent of fusarium head blight in wheat.

Salicylic acid (SA) is one of the key signal molecules in regulating plant resistance to diverse pathogens. In Arabidopsis thaliana, it is predominantly associated with resistance against biotrophic and hemibiotrophic pathogens, and triggering systemic acquired resistance. In contrast, the effect of SA on the defence efficiency of wheat against fusarium head blight (FHB) and its causal agent, Fusarium graminearum, is still poorly understood. Here we show that the F. graminearum mycelial growth and conidia germination were significantly inhibited, and eventually halted in the presence of increa

Advances in Fusarium drug resistance research.

Fusarium species cause many diseases in plants and humans, which results in a great number of economic losses every year. The management of plant diseases and related human diseases caused by Fusarium is challenging as many kinds of Fusarium may be intrinsically resistant to antifungal drugs, not to mention the fact that they can acquire drug resistance, which is common in clinical practice. To date, the drug resistance of Fusarium is mainly related to target alterations, drug efflux and biofilm formation. This article reviews recent studies related to the mechanism of Fusarium resistance, and

Biocontrol of watermelon Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum with Corallococcus sp. EGB.

Watermelon Fusarium wilt is a severe soil-borne disease that threatens continuous watermelon production. Effective disease control depends on the differentiation of pathogen races, the accumulation of soil-borne inoculum, and disturbances in the soil bacterial community caused by continuous cropping. In this study, a pathogenic fungus was isolated from diseased watermelon plants in a continuously cropped field in Dongtai, Jiangsu Province, China. Morphological characterization, multigene phylogenetic analysis, and pathogenicity assays revealed that the pathogenic isolate belongs to Fusarium ox

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. crypti, a novel forma specialis causing Fusarium wilt of mitsuba, Cryptotaenia japonica.

Fusarium oxysporum isolates causing Fusarium wilt in mitsuba (Cryptotaenia japonica Hassk.; also referred to as Japanese honeywort, Japanese honewort, or Japanese parsley) have traditionally been classified as f. sp. apii. However, some reports have indicated that the host-pathogenic F. oxysporum isolates derived from mitsuba are nonpathogenic to celery, the principal host of f. sp. apii. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the differences among isolates from mitsuba, coriander, and celery in terms of host range, phylogenetic relationships, genomic synteny, and effector profiles. Fusarium riograndense sp. nov., a new species in the Fusarium solani species complex causing fungal rhinosinusitis.

Invasive fusariosis has a high mortality and is predominantly observed in patients with leukemia. We report the first case of a novel species of Fusarium, Fusarium riograndense sp. nov, isolated from a lesion in the nasal cavity lesion of a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The etiological agent was identified by Multilocus Sequencing Typing (MLST), including RPB2, TEF-1α, and ITS-LSU sequences, the gold standard technique to identify new species of Fusarium. MLST and phenotypic data strongly supported its inclusion in the F. solani species complex (FSSC). The new species produced a r

Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum) genes expressed during infection of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)dagger.

SUMMARY We sought to identify Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (Fov) genes that may be associated with pathogenicity. Initially we utilized microarray and Q-PCR technology to identify Fov genes expressed in root and hypocotyl tissues during a compatible infection of cotton. We identified 218 fungal clones representing 174 Fov non-redundant genes as expressed in planta. The majority of the expressed sequences were expressed in infected roots, with only six genes detected in hypocotyl tissue. The Fov genes identified were predominately of unknown function or associated with fungal growth an

Thymol-based submicron emulsions exhibit antifungal activity against Fusarium graminearum and inhibit Fusarium head blight in wheat.

AIMS: Fusarium graminearum is a very destructive fungal pathogen that leads to Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat, a disease which costs growers millions of dollars annually both in crop losses and in remediation efforts. Current countermeasures include the deployment of wheat varieties with some resistance to FHB in conjunction with timed fungicide treatments. In this article, we introduce a fungicide based on thymol, a naturally occurring plant phenolic derived from essential oils. To overcome the hydrophobicity of thymol, the thymol active was incorporated into a low-surfactant submicron e
