In this work, we report a convenient method of grafting non-leachable bioactive amine functions onto the surface of bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibrils, via a simple silylation treatment in water. Two different silylation protocols, involving different solvents and post-treatments were envisaged and compared, using 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane (APS) and (2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane (AEAPS) as silylating agents. In aqueous and controlled conditions, water-leaching resistant amino functions could be successfully introduced into BC, via a simple freeze-drying process. The sily

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are a common complication after cranial and spinal surgery and are associated with increased morbidity. Despite continuous research in this field, this problem is far from solved. In this paper, we describe the construction and testing of a bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane as a new dural patch.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The synthesis of BC was performed using Gluconacetobacter hansenii (ATCC 23769) and films were sterilized by autoclaving. The membranes were seeded with human dural fibroblasts. Growth, shape, and cell viability were assessed after 4

Acetic acid bacteria (AAB) are known as a vinegar producer on account of their ability to accumulate a high concentration of acetic acid due to oxidative fermentation linking the ethanol oxidation respiratory chain. Reactions in oxidative fermentation cause poor growth because a large amount of the carbon source is oxidized incompletely and the harmful oxidized products are accumulated almost stoichiometrically in the culture medium during growth, but a newly identified AAB, Asaia, has shown unusual properties, including scanty acetic acid production and rapid growth, as compared with known AA

Bacterial cellulose (BC) produced by Komagaeibacter xylinum exhibits greater purity, Young's modulus, tensile strength and crystallinity than plant-derived cellulose. In contrast, natural plant cellulose, which is Iβ-rich, BC comprised a predominantly cellulose Iα structure. In this study, we cultivated BC in situ in the presence of water-soluble polymers-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-to obtain BC/water-soluble polymer composites. Their physical properties were systematically examined. We specifically evaluated the effect of increasing the viscosity of the culture me

Nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC), a type of cellulose nanofiber biosynthesized by Gluconacetobacter sp., has extremely long (i.e., high-aspect-ratio) fibers that are expected to be useful as nanofillers for fiber-reinforced composite resins. In this study, we investigated a composite of NFBC and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), a highly transparent resin, with the aim of improving the mechanical properties of the latter. The abundant hydroxyl groups on the NFBC surface were silylated using 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), a silane coupling agent bearing a methacryl

Can microbial cellulose (MC) be used as a bio-carrier for 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone (DHA)? The aim of this study was to examine the possibility of using MC as a biomaterial for DHA transferring into the stratum corneum and inducing changes in skin color. The MC patches were obtained from Gluconacetobacter xylinus strain and incubated in solutions with various concentrations of DHA (g·L-1: 20; 50; 80; 110) at 22 °C for 24 h. Afterwards; the patches were applied onto the skin for 15, 30, or 60 min. Skin color changes were assessed visually compared to a control patches without DHA. The intensity

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has numerous excellent properties but the absence of antibacterial activity restricts its applications in biomedical field. Therefore, in order to introduce the antibacterial characteristics into BC; herein, a facile method for incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) is presented. BC films were first immersed in zinc nitrate solution, followed by treating with NaOH solution, the BC loaded ZnO nanocomposite films were dried by a sheet former instrument at 80 °C for 20 min. The obtained BC/ZnO nanocomposites were characterized by different techniques. XRD results sh

The identification of acetic acid bacteria (AAB) from sound grapes from the Canary Islands is reported in the present study. No direct recovery of bacteria was possible in the most commonly used medium, so microvinifications were performed on grapes from Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote islands. Up to 396 AAB were isolated from those microvinifications and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. With this method, Acetobacter pasteurianus, Acetobacter tropicalis, Gluconobacter japonicus and Gluconacetobacter saccharivorans were identified. However, no discrimination be

Vinegar production is based on the acetification process by indigenous acetic acid bacteria (AAB). Among vinegar technologies, solid-state fermentation (SSF) processes are widespread in Asian countries to produce vinegar at small-scale. In this study, 21 AAB strains isolated from Chinese cereal vinegars produced by SSF collected in different regions of China were characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR fingerprinting. Isolates exhibited high degree of phenotypic variability as well as suitable traits for their uses as selected strains in SSF vinegar producti

BACKGROUND: Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a fiber substance produced by microbial fermentation. It is widely used in the food preservation industry because of its extremely pure texture, high crystallinity and high biocompatibility. In the present study, bacterial cellulose/thyme essential oil (BC/TEO-E) with antibacterial and fresh-keeping functions was prepared by ultrasonic treatment of modified bacterial cellulose for encapsulation of thyme essential oil, which effectively inhibited the spoilage of chilled chicken.
RESULTS: The purified BC, produced by Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 53524, was ul

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a multisystem genetic disease caused by the deletion of a region of 1.5-1.8 Mb on chromosome 7q11.23. The elastin gene seems to account for several comorbidities and distinct clinical features such including cardiovascular disease, connective tissue abnormalities, growth retardation, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Increasing evidence points to alterations in gut microbiota composition as a primary or secondary cause of some GI or extra-intestinal characteristics. In this study, we performed the first exploratory analysis of gut microbiota in WBS patients

Levansucrases are members of the glycoside hydrolase family and catalyse both the hydrolysis of the substrate sucrose and the transfer of fructosyl units to acceptor molecules. In the presence of sufficient sucrose, this may either lead to the production of fructooligosaccharides or fructose polymers. Aim of this study is to rationalise the differences in the polymerisation properties of bacterial levansucrases and in particular to identify structural features that determine different product spectrum in the levansucrase of the Gram-negative bacterium Erwinia amylovora (Ea Lsc, EC 2.4.1.10) as

Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) is a costly problem that impacts hydrocarbon production and processing equipment, water distribution systems, ships, railcars, and other types of metallic infrastructure. In particular, MIC is known to cause considerable damage to hydrocarbon fuel infrastructure including production, transportation, and storage systems, often times with catastrophic environmental contamination results. As the production and use of alternative fuels such as fuel-grade ethanol (FGE) increase, it is important to consider MIC of engineered materials exposed to these "newer fu

The formation of bacterial cellulose pellicles by Acetobacter xylinum is investigated in growth media supplemented with sodium alginate (SA) or carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Both polymers influence bacterial cellulose assembly during growth, but through distinct physicochemical mechanisms. In SA-containing media, increased viscosity reduces bacterial mobility and promotes the formation of denser pellicles with reduced interlayer spacing and porosity, without substantially affecting cellulose production. In contrast, under the acidic culture conditions used in this study, CMC undergoes pH-depen

The high cost of conventional carbon sources has limited the widespread application of bacterial cellulose (BC). In this study, tobacco stem waste extract (TWE) was evaluated as an alternative substrate for BC production via fermentation with Gluconacetobacter xylinus, and a silver-loaded composite (BC-Ag) was further developed for potential wound dressing applications. Medium optimization with the addition of citric acid and (NH4)2SO4 effectively alleviated salt stress and acid inhibition inherent to TWE, achieving a BC yield of 2.40 ± 0.12 g/L while preserving a native cellulose I crystallin

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has received substantial interest owing to its unique structural features and impressive physico-mechanical properties. BC has a variety of applications in biomedical fields, including use as biomaterial for artificial skin, artificial blood vessels, vascular grafts, scaffolds for tissue engineering, and wound dressing. However, pristine BC lacks certain properties, which limits its applications in various fields; therefore, synthesis of BC composites has been conducted to address these limitations. A variety of BC composite synthetic strategies have been developed bas

Nanocellulose is cellulose in the form of nanostructures, i.e., features not exceeding 100 nm at least in one dimension. These nanostructures include nanofibrils, found in bacterial cellulose; nanofibers, present particularly in electrospun matrices; and nanowhiskers, nanocrystals, nanorods, and nanoballs. These structures can be further assembled into bigger two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) nano-, micro-, and macro-structures, such as nanoplatelets, membranes, films, microparticles, and porous macroscopic matrices. There are four main sources of nanocellulose: bacteria (Glucona

Bacterial cellulose (BC)-based biomaterials on medical device platforms have gained significant interest for tissue-engineered scaffolds or engraftment materials in regenerative medicine. In particular, BC has an ultrafine and highly pure nanofibril network structure and can be used as an efficient wound-healing platform since cell migration into a wound site is strongly meditated by the structural properties of the extracellular matrix. Here, the fabrication of a nanofibrillar patch by using BC and its application as a new wound-healing platform for traumatic tympanic membrane (TM) perforatio

OBJECTIVES: Currently available materials in congenital cardiac surgery (CCS) are far from optimal because they do not facilitate growth, remodelling, or renewal, resulting in poorer long-term outcomes due to material-related limitations. Bacterial cellulose (BC), a biogenic polymer-based material produced by Acetobacter xylinum, has emerged as a promising alternative exhibiting excellent bio- and haemocompatibility. This study aimed to develop BC specifically for application in CCS by modifying culturing conditions to enhance its biomechanical resilience.
METHODS: Bacterial cellulose was pro

Bacterial cellulose (BC) features a nanofibrillar network structure that can provide a good template for quantum dots (QDs), to overcome the fluorescence quenching-effect of QDs in polymer composites. Here, we fabricated novel fluorescent aerogels with tunable emission by covalently binding environmentally-friendly ZnS(CuInS2)/ZnS core-shell quantum dots along the nanofibrillar BC. A new ligand of 3-(mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane allows QDs to transfer from toluene to alcohol solvent and stably bind to the BC. After supercritical CO2 drying, the resulting BC-QDs aerogels maintain the porous
