A rare hemoglobin variant, Hb JLome, was identified by chance in a male patient with diabetes mellitus (DM). The patient had no evidence of anemia or hemolysis. However, when his glycated hemoglobin (Hb A1c) was examined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to assess the state of his DM, an abnormal Hb was unexpectedly detected on the chromatogram. The morphology of the red blood cells was normal. A fast-moving band as well as a normally moving Hb band, of roughly equal intensities, were observed by cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis. The oxygen equilibrium curve was essent

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Variceal hemorrhaging due to portal hypertension is a severe complication of liver cirrhosis. Although several biomarkers have been reported as predictors of the presence of varices, it is still difficult to assess the risk of variceal bleeding without esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The ratio of glycated albumin (GA) to glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was reported to increase with the progression of liver fibrosis. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the GA/HbA1c ratio is related to the severity and bleeding-risk of the varices.
METHODOLOGY: We measured the GA/HbA1

To investigate how liver disease alter the serum glycated proteins as markers of diabetic control, we studied serum GA, A1c and especially GA/A1c ratio in 255 patients having over 35IU/L in ALT(transaminase) compared with those of 829 type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in cross sectional manner. 255 patients with liver diseases were divided into 69 patients with biopsy proven liver cirrhosis (LC), 66 patients with chronic hepatitis(CH) and 120 patients with fatty liver(FL) diagnosed by abdominal echography. The mean GA/A1c ratio (+/-SD) was significantly higher (p<0.0001) in LC group(3.71+/-1.03) t

BACKGROUND: Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a form of hemoglobin bound to glucose and used as an index of glycaemic control reflecting glucose levels of the previous three months. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the commonest form of anemia that affects HbA1c. Reports on the effects of IDA on HbA1c levels are inconsistent in India. Therefore, the study correlated the HbA1c and IDA in non-diabetic female patients.
METHODS: A correlative study between HbA1c and IDA was carried out at the Department of Biochemistry, A. J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru, India. A total of 50 non-diabetic

Glycation of biological macromolecules, due to hyperglycemia, promotes the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). It is accelerated in diabetic patients and is responsible for the pathophysiology and progression of diabetes. Previous reports have shown that amount of AGEs formation and glycation-induced structural damage is higher in hemoglobin (Hb) than other proteins present in blood. In our previous study, we have shown structural changes in Hb by D-ribose which may result into the generation of immunogenic neo-epitopes. Thus, we hypothesized that D-ribose induced structural p

Worldwide, the prevalence of diabetes remains high. Studies have shown that iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is associated with increased levels of glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), but the mechanism remains unclear. Hematological changes, iron metabolism, study methodology, and other factors could affect the results of diagnostic investigations, leading to false results. Red blood cell turnover in the bone marrow and the quality and heterogeneity of erythrocytes may influence the rate of hemoglobin glycation. By changing the structure of hemoglobin and inducing peroxidation, iron deficiency accele

Glycated hemoglobin (%HbA1c) has become a well established and reliable long term parameter indicative of the mean glucose load of the preceding 8 -10 weeks. A normal life span of approximately120 days of the red blood cells (RBC) is an essential condition. Hemolytic affections are characterized by a shorter life span, reducing the overall glucose uptake and %HbA1c. Measured %HbA1c is no longer correlated with mean blood glucose of the preceding period, simulating false low values. Underestimation of this kind is demonstrated for several hemolytic conditions, among them hereditary spherocytosi

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and anemia are both prevalent in India. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is the gold standard test for the diagnosis of DM and monitoring of glycemic status. Hemoglobin (Hb) being the integral component of HbA1c, there is a possibility that anemia can also affect the level of HbA1c apart from the various other factorsObjectives: To study the prevalence, type of anemia, and correlation between HbA1c and anemia, including red blood cell (RBC) indices in euglycemic type 2 DM patients. The study was conducted with the objective of studying the correlation between HbA1c and anemia

BACKGROUND: "Quantile-dependent expressivity" is a dependence of genetic effects on whether the phenotype (e.g., insulin resistance) is high or low relative to its distribution.
METHODS: Quantile-specific offspring-parent regression slopes (βOP) were estimated by quantile regression for fasting glucose concentrations in 6,453 offspring-parent pairs from the Framingham Heart Study.
RESULTS: Quantile-specific heritability (h2), estimated by 2βOP/(1 + rspouse), increased 0.0045 ± 0.0007 (p = 8.8 × 10-14) for each 1% increment in the fasting glucose distribution, that is, h2 ± SE were 0.057 ± 0.

Foot ulcers, infections, and deformity are some of the major sources of mortality and morbidity among the diabetic population. The relationship between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) has been well established. There is a dearth of literature on the relationship between vibration perception threshold (VPT) and HbA1c values. So, the objective of the study was to determine the strength of linear relationship between HbA1c levels and vibration perception threshold in DPN. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and diabetic foot

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) refers to the product of the nonenzymatic reaction of hemoglobin (Hb) with glucose and is clinically routine for assessing long-term glycemic control by monitoring its proportion relative to total Hb. However, exclusive reliance on the absolute amount of HbA1c may misjudge patients' glycemic status; moreover, current commercial detection methods are constrained by the need for specialized equipment/operators or high per-test costs. These two limitations underscore the urgency to develop rapid, portable, and low-cost point-of-care testing (POCT) strategies. Herein, w

Purpose: Elevated glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) has not been specifically evaluated as a risk factor for urosepsis after kidney stone procedures. Moreover, there are no current guidelines for perioperative HbA1c optimization, nor recommendations for the optimal timing to treat non-urgent kidney stones in the setting of poor glycemic control. We evaluated the association between perioperative HbA1c levels and sepsis risk after ureteroscopy with lithotripsy. Methods: Patients undergoing ureteroscopy with lithotripsy from January 2020 to June 2023 at a tertiary center were retrospectively revie

Sustained high glucose impairs bone metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this study, the relationship between glycemic control and bone metabolism was examined in male hemodialysis (HD) patients with T2DM. To avoid the effect of menstruation and the menstrual cycle, obesity, and glycosuria-induced hypercalciuria on bone metabolism, male anuric nonobese HD patients with T2DM (n = 42) were enrolled. Calcaneus stiffness index (SI) was determined using ultrasound after HD session. Casual plasma glucose (PG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)), and glycated albumin (GA) were m

A 5-year-old male patient with X-linked alpha-thalassemia/mental retardation syndrome is reported. He showed multiple minor anomalies including characteristic facial abnormalities, alpha-thalassemia, severe mental retardation, and hypogonadism. Analysis of his hemoglobin by high performance liquid chromatography using an automated glycated hemoglobin analyzer revealed an abnormal peak. Identification of an abnormal peak by an automated glycated hemoglobin analyzer will aid in the diagnosis of patients with X-linked alpha-thalassemia/mental retardation syndrome.

Obesity is a chronic, progressive, relapsing and treatable multifactorial, neurobehavioral disease and leads to adverse effects on health. The leading basis of obesity is long term energy inequality between consumed calories and expended calories. Excess adiposity contributes to alterations in vascular function and blood pressure regulation, increasing the likelihood of developing hypertension. The objective of this study was to assess the blood pressure and glycated hemoglobin in obese and non-obese male. This cross-sectional type of observational study was carried out in the Department of Ph
