A Psychoeducational CBT-based Group Intervention ("Drop It") for Repetitive Negative Thinking: Theoretical Concepts and Treatment Processes.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT)-such as worry and rumination-is an important transdiagnostic factor in the onset, course, and recurrence of depressive and anxiety disorders. This article describes a psychoeducational cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based group intervention entitled "Drop It" that focuses exclusively on treating RNT in patients with major depressive disorder and/or generalized anxiety disorder. The theoretical concepts and treatment goals of the intervention are outlined. The organization and therapeutic processes of the different sessions are described and illustrated wi

Distinct neural processes are engaged in the modulation of mimicry by social group-membership and emotional expressions.

People often spontaneously engage in copying each other's postures and mannerisms, a phenomenon referred to as behavioral mimicry. Social psychology experiments indicate that mimicry denotes an implicit affiliative signal flexibly regulated in response to social requirements. Yet, the mediating processes and neural underpinnings of such regulation are largely unexplored. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined mimicry regulation by combining an automatic imitation task with facial stimuli, varied on two social-affective dimensions: emotional expression (angry vs

Diverse disease processes of group A Streptococcus infection including severe invasive infections among members of a family.

We herein report three cases of group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection in a family. Patient 1, a 50-year-old woman, was transferred to our hospital in shock with acute respiratory distress syndrome, swelling in the right neck and erythemata on both lower extremities. She required intubation because of laryngeal oedema. At the same time, patient 2, a 48-year-old man, was admitted because of septic shock, pneumonia and a pulmonary abscess. Five days later, patient 3, a 91-year-old woman, visited our clinic with bloody stool. All three patients were cured by antibiotics, and GAS was detected by sp

Group Psychosocial Interventions Following Acquired Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Group Process and Outcomes.

Acquired brain injury can result in disability with direct and indirect consequences for psychosocial functioning. Psychosocial interventions embedded within traditional neurorehabilitation may provide a valuable buffer. While there is evidence of benefits associated with group-based psychosocial interventions, there is no single recommended intervention, despite several different approaches having been trialled. This systematic review aimed to provide a critical appraisal of existing group psychosocial interventions in neurorehabilitation, meta-analyse their efficacy, and explore the contribu

Programmable Metamaterials with Perforated Shell Group Supporting Versatile Information Processing.

Mechanical metamaterials have emerged as promising tools for enabling mechanical intelligence in soft machines through interaction with the external environment. Note that most representative results in the literature focused on certain features of information processing with the designs of novel metamaterials. It remains challenging to design metamaterials with more integrated information processing capabilities toward comprehensive intelligence. In this work, a novel approach employing programmable multi-stability of perforated shells (PS) with staggered trapezoidal voids is proposed to deve

Group psychoeducation for bulimia nervosa with and without additional psychotherapy process sessions.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether additional sessions of group psychotherapy process (PP) would incrementally benefit bulimia nervosa (BN) subjects over and above that which is achieved through a course of brief group psychoeducation (PE). METHOD: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the first cohort of 40 BN subjects completed five-session PE-alone groups that were highly didactic and explicitly devoid of group process work. The second cohort of 41 BN subjects completed 12-session PE + PP groups that integrated PE with more conventional cognitive-behavioral group process interv

The contribution of the left inferior frontal gyrus in affective processing of social groups.

We investigated the contribution of the pars opercularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFGop) in representing knowledge about social groups. We asked healthy individuals to categorize words preceded by semantically congruent or incongruent primes while stimulating the LIFGop. Previous studies showing an involvement of the LIFGop both in processing social stimuli and negative valence words led us to predict that its stimulation would affect responses to negative social category words. Compared to the Vertex as control site, the stimulation of the LIFGop increased the speed of categorizat

Minimal group membership biases early neural processing of emotional expressions.

Mere affiliation with a social group alters people's perception of other individuals. One suggested mechanism behind such influence is that group membership triggers divergent visual facial representations for in-group and out-group members, which could constrain face processing. Here, using electroencephalography (EEG) under functional magnetic resonance imagery (fMRI) during a group categorization task, we investigated the impact of mere affiliation to an arbitrary group on the processing of emotional faces. The results indicate that in- and out-group members trigger differential event-relat

Small Group Process and Outcome Research Highlights: A 25-Year Perspective.

We summarize major research findings from the past 25 years within the larger evolution of group psychotherapy. Small group process findings are highlighted from a group-as-a-whole, interpersonal relation, subgroup, individual member characteristics, and leader perspective. Special emphasis is given to cohesion and the significant correlation between cohesion and outcome. We note that group therapy is an empirically well-supported treatment for a large number of psychiatric disorders and describe evidence supporting the outcome of various theoretical orientations. Key studies showing outcome e

[Process analysis of cognitive-behavioral group psychotherapy for patients with panic disorder].

The study explores the verbal interaction relationship between therapists and members, and the interaction model of this group. Six subjects were chosen by convenience sampling from the psychiatric OPD of a medical center in the Taichung area. Subjects with informed consent participated in a 12-week course of closed group psychotherapy. All data was tape-recorded and the Hill Interaction Matrix (HIM) scale was applied for simultaneous triangulation, in order to analyze the group's dynamic development of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy for patients with panic disorder. The results indicated

Prospective associations between bi+ minority stressors and internalizing symptoms: The mediating roles of general and group-specific processes.

Objective: The prevalence of anxiety and depressive (i.e., internalizing) disorders is higher among bi+ individuals (i.e., individuals with attractions to more than one gender and/or who identify as bisexual or pansexual) compared to both heterosexual and lesbian/gay individuals. Cross-sectional research has demonstrated that stressors unique to bi+ individuals are associated with internalizing symptoms. However, longitudinal research examining these associations and underlying mechanisms is extremely limited. Method: We utilized five waves of data (6 months between waves) from a diverse sampl

Evaluation of Group B Streptococcus culture processing using a commercial flocked swab with and without automated sample processing instrument.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of neonatal sepsis. Screening for vaginal-rectal colonization of the mother is important to prevent exposure. The current standard diagnostic method for GBS is to collect a vaginal-rectal swab and inoculate in LIM broth to increase sensitivity. Use of flocked swabs such as Eswabs has become the recommended collection device due to their increased recovery rates and potential for automation. Despite being the recommended collection device, there is a lack of adequate literature providing guidance on processing of Eswabs for GBS cultures. This

Mercury levels and trends in fish (2011-2021): A Bayesian approach with multi-group Gaussian processes and hierarchical imputation.

BACKGROUND: Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal, with fish consumption being the primary source of exposure in humans. This study aimed to describe Hg concentrations in fish species consumed in the Valencian Community (Spain) and their trends during the period 2011-2021. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on Hg levels in fish meat between 2011 and 2021, using data from the Food Safety Monitoring Program of the Valencian Regional Government. Descriptive analyses and temporal trends were inferred for total Hg (THg) (n = 799) and methylmercury (MeHg) (n = 271) levels by fish species and fish

Immunologic abnormality in a group of Macaca arctoides with high mortality due to atypical mycobacterial and other disease processes.

Of 54 Macaca arctoides, 44 died during the 2.5 years after their assignment to a common cage. Although early deaths were due to trauma, acute gastric dilatation, and shigellosis; latter deaths were the result of a variety of uncommon diseases including atypical mycobacterial disease, malignant lymphoma, protozoan encephalomyelitis, and other necrotizing and inflammatory lesions. Atypical mycobacterial disease due to Mycobacterium avium intracellular serotypes was the most frequent single disease agent recognized (33% [18 macaques]). This disease began in the ileum and large intestine with subs

Post-Session Online Group Counseling Reflection Process (GCReP): A Preliminary Analysis.

This study introduces a technique called the Post-Session Group Counseling Reflection Process (GCReP). In this technique, members are invited sit silently after each session and listen to the leaders process it among themselves. Using a qualitative approach, the study examined the experiences of eight university students (six women and two men) who were affected by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake (2023) and participated in an eight-session online group-counseling program. Data were collected through five semi-structured open-ended questions and analyzed using thematic content analysis. Two overar

Group interpersonal psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder: development process and a pilot test.

BACKGROUND: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder that negatively impairs patients' quality of life. Studies suggest that inadequate consideration of interpersonal problems may contribute to the poor treatment response in psychotherapy for GAD. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention that focuses on symptoms by improving interpersonal functioning, and research demonstrates that IPT is efficacious in treating social anxiety and panic disorders. To date, however, there are no studies examining IPT for patients w

Trigeminal neuralgia diffusivities using Gaussian process classification and merged group tractography.

Imaging of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) has demonstrated key diffusion tensor imaging-based diffusivity alterations in the trigeminal nerve; however, imaging has primarily focused on the peripheral nerve segment because of previous limitations in reliably segmenting small fiber bundles across multiple subjects. We used Selective Automated Group Integrated Tractography to study 36 subjects with TN (right-sided pain) and 36 sex-matched controls to examine the trigeminal nerve (fifth cranial nerve [CN V]), pontine decussation (TPT), and thalamocortical fibers (S1).
