[Features of the distribution of HLA antigens in patients with neurologic manifestations of lumbar osteochondrosis].

Examinations of the HLA antigens (A and B loci) distribution in patients with neurologic manifestations of lumbar osteochondrosis (NMLO) has revealed a statistically more rare incidence of A11 antigens and a more frequent one, of B7 and B18 ones. A different distribution of the antigens in cases with the major clinical forms of lumbar osteochondrosis was noted. Patients with discogenic lumbosacral radiculitis differed from normal subjects by the same antigens as all NMLO patients. For patients with lumbar ischialgia increased concentrations of B7 and B18 antigens were characteristic, whereas i

Are HLA antigens a risk factor for acute GVHD in thalassemic patients receiving HLA-identical stem cell transplantation?

We retrospectively evaluated the association between risk factors and acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) among 182 beta thalassemia patients who received 73 peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) or 109 bone marrow transplants from HLA-identical siblings between 1991 and 2003. The relationship between the severity of aGVHD was examined for the following factors: HLA antigens, age, sex, ABO mismatch, sex mismatch (between recipient and donor), thalassemia class, graft source, transplant cell dose, CD3+ cell dose, conditioning regimen, GVHD prophylaxis, neutrophil engraftment duration, and blood

HLA antigens and otosclerosis. A possible new genetic factor.

The pattern of HLA antigens was studied in 68 Greek patients with otosclerosis with and without a family history of otosclerosis and in the members of seven families in which the disease occurs, and was compared with that of 400 unrelated control subjects. Fifty-six specific HLA antiserum samples were used to determine 27 HLA-A and B antigens with the two-stage standard National Institutes of Health assay. The results were modified as follows: There was a highly significant increase of the antigens HLA-A11, Bw35, and B14 only in the patients with family history. These findings, together with t

HLA class I typing in Egyptian childhood minimal change nephrotic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Reports on the association between human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) and childhood minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) are variable. The association between HLA class I and MCNS has not been tested among Egyptian children. METHODS: We studied such associations in a group of steroid-responsive MCNS Egyptian children (n=37) in comparison to a group of healthy Egyptians (n=100). Typing was performed using standard lymphocytotoxicity assay. RESULTS: The frequency of HLA-B27 was remarkably higher among MCNS children (18.9%) compared with the control group (1%) (p<0.001, risk ratio

[Comparative study of the frequency of HLA antigens in diffuse toxic goiter and autoimmune thyroiditis].

Class I HLA antigens were determined in 42 patients with diffuse toxic goiter (DTG), 31 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) and in 71 donors. A degree of association of antigen and disease (R) and difference in the frequency of some HLA antigen bearing in the groups of patients and healthy persons were revealed. Positive association of DTG with antigens A1, A3, B8, haplotype A1-B8 and AT with A1 and B35 was established. The bearing of B13 antigen in DTG and A11 in AT was a protective factor in the development of the above diseases. A study of the comparative distribution of HLA antigens

[Human echinococcosis: the role of histocompatibility antigens in realizing infestations and the characteristics of their course].

The role of histocompatibility antigens in the realization of invasions and the nature of its course were studied in 71 patients with Echinococcus granulosus infection and in 18 with E. multilocularis infection. It has been shown that the effects of HLA antigens on the realization of invasion is heterodirectional; the factors predisposing to the occurrence of echinococcosis are HLA-B5, B18, and A28 antigens, whereas those preventing their realization are HLA-B14 antigen. The carriage of HLA-B5 and B18 antigens determines a high risk of E. granulosus infection of the lungs and liver. The realiz

HLA-ABC antigens in supraglottic cancer patients and their relationship with incidence and survival.

The frequency of HLA-ABC antigens in the total of 153 cases of supraglottic cancer of the larynx and in 118 and 37 patients from this group after 3 years and 5 or more years of survival respectively, was analysed. No significant differencies in the phenotype frequency class I HLA antigens in these patients were found, as compared with the frequency of of HLA, antigens in the healthy control population. The incidence of clinical stage I-III or IV did not affect the results, of the analysis. If the patients survived 5 or more years, the HLA-A31 antigen specificity was significantly more common a

HLA antigen frequencies in flax byssinosis patients.

Not all workers exposed to flax dust contract byssinosis. It is not known what determines susceptibility or insusceptibility. This study is an attempt to establish whether the incidence of histocompatibility antigens is involved in susceptibility to the disease. Forty patients suffering from flax byssinosis were tissue-typed for HLA-A and -B antigens. HLA-B27 was significantly more common in the patients (22.5%) than in the controls (5.5%); P = 0.029 after correction for the number of antigens compared. HLA-A11 was present in twelve patients (30%) compared with 14% in the controls; after corre

Contrasting relapse rate associated with the absence of HLA-A3/A11 in T cell-replete haploidentical transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Natural killer cell alloreactivity contributes to the graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT). However, its importance remains controversial across studies. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, we studied NK cell alloreactivity and its association with clinical outcomes using the education model in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing transplantation. Patients were stratified by the presence or absence of alloreactivity assessment, which was defined by the coexistence (in the donor) of four germli

[Immunogenetic mechanism of Behçet's disease].

In order to investigate the immunogenetic mechanism of Behçet's disease, frequencies of HLA antigens were studied in patients. The subjects consisted of 66 patients and 99 normal controls. A lymphocyte cytotoxicity test was used for typing HLA-A, -B, -C, -DR, -DQ antigens. HLA-DP antigens were analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. A significant increase of HLA-B15 was observed in the patients. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in HLA-Bw52 which possesses only two different amino acids from HLA-B15. On the contrar

Associations between human leukocyte antigen type and nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Caucasians in the United States.

A genetic component to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has been suggested by associations of the malignancy with human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) in Southern Chinese populations, among which NPC is a major cancer. Data from other races are inconclusive. We have investigated associations between NPC and HLA antigens at the HLA-A, B, C, and DQ loci and alleles at the DRB1 locus in a population-based, multicenter investigation in the United States. Data from 82 cases and 140 controls are presented, making this the largest study population analyzing data from Caucasians to date. HLA frequencies from

CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell clones from congenital rubella syndrome patients with IDDM recognize overlapping GAD65 protein epitopes. Implications for HLA class I and II allelic linkage to disease susceptibility.

To fully characterize human glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD)65 protein T-cell epitopes associated with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), CTL clones specific to GAD65 protein antigens were isolated from two congenital rubella syndrome (CRS)-associated IDDM patients. Overlapping nonamer T-cell epitopes recognized by both CD4+ or CD8+ CTL clones within peptides GAD65(252-266) and GAD65(274-286) were identified as sequences bounded by GAD65(255-266) with 6/9 overlapping residues, and GAD65(276-285) with 8/9 overlapping residues, respectively, using two panels of overlapping peptide anal

Profiling of human leukocyte antigens in Eales' disease.

Eales' disease is a primary retinal perivasculitis of an undetermined etiology seen predominantly in the Indian subcontinent and rarely in the West. Strong HLA association has been proven in retinal vasculitis of Behcet's disease. HLA association of Eales' disease is unknown and therefore the present study was undertaken to determine the same. The frequency of 30 HLA antigens (9 HLA-A antigens, 10 HLA-B antigens, 3 HLA-C antigens, 7 HLA-DR antigens and 1 HLA-DQ antigen) was studied by standard micro-lymphocytotoxicity test in 57 patients with Eales' disease and 50 age and sex-matched normal pe

Generation of HLA-B55 restricted T lymphocyte mediated cytotoxicity against autologous LCL.

The lymphocytes of one HLA-A11 positive individual (A1, A11, B49, B55) were stimulated in vitro with the autologous EBV transformed lymphoblastoid cell line (LCL). The culture contained HLA-A1, A11 and B55 restricted, LCL selective cytotoxic T cells (CTLs). In the T cell culture stimulated four times, the lysis of A11 and B55 carrying targets suggested that the subsets of the two latter CTL types had similar size. After further stimulations the B55 restricted CTLs were enriched in the culture. Earlier results suggested that in HLA-A11 positive individuals the A11-restricted LCL-selective CTL s
