Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) can occur after blunt trauma and can be classified into low- or high-energy injuries. Low energy injuries occur after impact on a small blunt object. High-energy injuries are sustained during motor vehicle accidents or automobile versus pedestrian accidents. We present six cases of high-energy TAWH cases that were treated at our trauma center. All patients presented with varying degrees of abdominal tenderness with either abdominal skin ecchymosis or abrasions, which made physical examination difficult. CT scan confirmed the hernia in each patient. All si

In recent years an increased occurrence of posttraumatic abdominal-wall hernias, i. e., subcutaneous abdominal ruptures, has been observed in children. The causal trauma is a fall on a scooter or bicycle handlebar. The predilectional place of injury lies near the linea alba or lateral of the rectus sheath. After several days of observation in order to exclude the possibility of an additional intra-abdominal injury, the hernial gap is operatively closed. An important safety measure would be remodelling bicycle bars.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether levels of serum immunoglobulins (sIgs) at baseline were associated with clinical parameters or B-cell dynamics following rituximab (RTX) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: Baseline Ig levels, C-reactive protein (CRP), DAS28 and CD19+ve B-cell count (baseline, 1, 3 and 5 months) in 112 patients with RA after 1 cycle of RTX were included. All showed adequate B-cell depletion (<5 CD19+B cells/μl) after 1 month. Normal sIg ranges were for IgA (0.7-4.0 g/L), IgG (7.0-16.0 g/L), and IgM (0.4-2.3 g/L).
RESULTS: Baseline IgA levels were raised in

PURPOSE: Description of a very rare case of internal abdominal hernia, namely herniation of the proximal jejunum in the Landzert fossa, through a hole in the mesocolon transversum.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Based on preoperative history, clinical state and radiological findings, the diagnosis of internal hernia was strongly suspected.
RESULTS: Suspected diagnosis was confirmed during laparotomy. After reduction of the jejunum and closure of the hernia orifice, the patient recovered promptly.
CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of internal herniation should always be considered in every patient who presen

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia, a rare cause of hernia, has a confusing clinical picture and requires a high index of suspicion for prompt diagnosis and management. Such hernias, if missed, can result in high morbidity and may prove fatal. Distinction from a pre-existing hernia is important as well. We report our experience in two such cases, which had presented in a span of 9 months, and submit a brief analysis of 50 reviewed cases.

The primary radiologic evidence of intra-abdominal hernia is disturbance of normal small intestine arrangement. Loops of intestine are crowded together as if in a bag, giving the appearance of clumping or sacculation. Dilatation and loss of mobility may occur with varying degrees of stasis. Displacement of viscera or pressure deformity may be observed. Studies of the small bowel are necessary to demonstrate these conditions and must be made with the patient in the erect as well as the horizontal position. Repeated studies may be required, and the best time to make them is during an acute attac

Two patients presented with abdominal wall hernia in the 9th intercostal space on the right. Such localizations are extremely rare, occurring after closed or open chest or abdominal trauma producing two contiguous orifices in the diaphragm and the intercostal chest wall. The diaphragmatic orifice is due to a low lateral disinsertion and the intercostal orifice is situated in the 7th to 11th space, occurring immediately or later. Intercostal abdominal hernias are sometimes discovered due to pain or digestive or respiratory disorders. Clinical diagnosis is simple. CT scan confirms the clinical d

Paraduodenal hernias are the most common type of congenital internal hernia. Because of its overall rare incidence, this entity is often overlooked during initial assessment of the patient. Lack of specific diagnostic criteria also makes diagnosis exceedingly difficult, and the resulting diagnostic delays can lead to tragic outcomes for patients. Despite these perceived barriers to timely diagnosis, there may be specific radiographic findings that, when combined with the appropriate constellation of clinical symptoms, would aid in diagnosis. This patient first presented at 8 years of age with

Mucinous neoplasm of the appendix are rare entities, among these, mucinous cystadenomas contribute to 31-34%. Cystadenomas often produce extensive dilatation of the appendix with epithelial atypia. Spontaneous perforation often occurs in 20%, leading to mucin distribution throughout the peritoneal cavity. Half of the patients are completely asymptomatic and are detected as an incidental diagnosis, others symptoms include a palpable mass, hernias, weight loss, peritonism or even intestinal obstruction. We present a case of a 71-year-old female, she presented with a palpable mass in the upper ab

Primary ventral hernias can be congenital or acquired, but are not associated with a fascial scar or related to a trauma. Some ventral hernias such as Spigelian, lumbar, or obturator hernias represent a diagnostic challenge, given their relative rarity and their unusual anatomic locations. The article presents the etiology, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of these hernias, and briefly describes the various surgical approaches, including open and laparoscopic.

Based on anatomical background authors review the current knowledge on mechanisms and anatomical predisposes causing abdominal herniations. They are giving a brief summary of limitations of potential spaces involved into dislocation of abdominal visceral through natural spaces. Authors try to join anatomical knowledge with clinical information what might be useful in understanding of the patomechanism of these surgical disorders.

Current management of incisional hernias is based on the tension free parietoplasty with prosthesis. This option is considered as the gold standard leading to a recurrence rate lower than 10%. Laparoscopic approach involves the placement of a composite intraperitoneal prosthesis obstructing the wall defect without anatomic reconstruction or peritoneal excision. This article describes the standard technique of the laparoscopic insertion of a prosthesis.

An internal abdominal herniation is the protrusion of a viscus through a normal or abnormal mesenteric or peritoneal aperture. Internal abdominal herniations can either be acquired through a trauma or surgical procedure, or constitutional and related to congenital peritoneal defects. Paraduodenal hernias are the most common type of internal abdominal hernias, accounting for over one-half of reported cases, and thus are a significant clinical entity. Other internal hernias include pericecal, transmesenteric, transomental, intersigmoid, supravesical hernias and herniation through the foramen of

Despite an increase in incidence of blunt abdominal trauma and despite the variations in compressive forces that occur, very few cases of traumatic hernia of the anterior abdominal wall have been recorded. Two recently treated cases of traumatic disruption of the musculature and fascia of the anterior abdominal wall with herniation of intestine into the subcutaneous space are herein reported. The occurrence of blunt abdominal trauma associated with an extra-abdominal mass believed to contain intestine signifies a severe compressive force and probable extensive associated injury. It represents

INTRODUCTION: Ventral hernias significantly impact patients' quality of life. It is essential to recognise this when creating a treatment plan and conducting studies that compare interventions. The Abdominal Hernia-Q is a meticulously validated questionnaire that focuses on patient-reported outcomes. However, at the time of this study, no Danish version was available. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a Danish translation of the Abdominal Hernia-Q.
METHODS: The translation of the questionnaire followed a comprehensive process, including forward-backwards translation, expert committee rev

Lateral abdominal wall hernias are rare and inconsistently defined, which is why the use of the European Hernia Society classification makes sense, not least for the purpose of comparing the quality of surgical results. A distinction must be made between true fascial defects and denervation atrophy. Based on the available literature, there is generally a low level of evidence with no consensus on the best operative strategy. The proximity to bony structures and the complex anatomy of the three-layer abdominal wall make the technical treatment of lateral hernias difficult. The surgical variatio

This paper presents the surgical technique for ventral abdominal hernia repair, including median incisional hernia, umbilical hernia and epigastric hernia. The main stages of the surgical procedure are as follows: pinpointing the parietal defect, insufflation of pneumoperitoneum and placing the trocars, inspection and adhesiolysis of the peritoneal cavity, closure of the defect with extracorporeal transparietal U reverse stitches, preparing the mesh, introducing the mesh in the peritoneal cavity and fixing it with transfascial sutures and tackers. Postop care measures, postop complications and

Repair of abdominal wall defects is a challenge for all general surgeons and a variety of methods have been described in the past. Traditionally, primary suture repair was shown to have a high recurrence rate in long-term follow-up studies. Herniorrhaphies that apply a large prosthetic mesh are appear to have a lower failure rate, but extensive dissection of soft tissue contributes to an increased incidence of wound infections and wound-related complications. The method of laparoscopic incisional hernia repair was developed in the early 1990s. This technique is based on the same physical and s
