["The pestilence vicious was…": "The Black Death" of XIV century in Rus].

The pandemic of plague, that affected Eurasia in middle of 40s - early 50s of XIV century and remained in history as as "The Black Death", became one of the most death-dealing epidemics that ever stroke humankind and recorded in historical sources. Owing to that many documentary and narrative sources remained intact, the history of this pandemic is considered as well examined. This is evidenced by enormous historiography of the problem, including works of the most different character and orientation. Yet, it should be admitted that in national Russian historiography the issues related to histo

Microbes before microbiology: Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg and Berlin's infusoria.

Naturalist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg pioneered research on living and fossil infusoria (including protists and bacteria) since the 1830s by collecting samples from all over the world, thus describing numerous microbes and discussing their effects for the planet and for humankind. This article introduces Ehrenberg as a natural historian of microbes and situates his work in the nineteenth century life sciences with respect to debates about cell theory, evolution, and concepts of disease. I argue that in spite of occurring before these major conceptual innovations of the life sciences, Ehrenb

[Notes about other epidemics in Colonial Chile].

In chronicles or in the historiography of the Colony in Chile there are few references about epidemics different to smallpox; like typhus, typhoid fever, dysentery, etc. Almost all, fast spreading in the country and some with high lethality, which led to overflowing the capacity of hospitals in the Chilean colonial period.

[The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition: interview with Susana Ramírez Martín].

In this interview, Professor Susana Ramírez Martín discusses her academic career and the challenges of pursuing an interdisciplinary field, especially in Spain. She highlights how the historiography of medicine and health has developed with significant participation from medical practitioners. She also explores topics from her research on the Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition, offering comparative reflections on the introduction of Jenner's vaccine in Spanish and Portuguese America.

Suffering and death among early American Roentgenologists: the power of remotely anatomizing the living body in fin de siècle America.

This manuscript has two aims. First, I extend the historiography on early American roentgenology that demonstrates that dozens of early adopters knowingly suffered intense pain, mutilation, and death for the sake of the X-ray. The objective is to pinpoint as precisely as possible when and to what extent the roentgenologists knew of the life-threatening risks of X-ray exposure. Second, I articulate a partial explanation for their behavior that is rooted in the social power of remotely anatomizing the living body in fin de siècle American scientific and medical culture.

[The history of nursing and disciplinary coherence: historiographical challenges facing a profession in transition].

Nurses rely daily on patients' histories through anamnesis, one of the foundational acts of nursing care, yet often maintain a more uncertain relationship with their own professional history. This article explores this paradox and examines the functions of nursing history in a context of professional transformation. Beyond its memorial dimension, nursing history emerges as a critical, pedagogical, and disciplinary resource that contributes to professional coherence, knowledge transmission, and the development of nursing science.

Looking Sideways: Locating Epidemics and Erasures in South Asia.

While focused on the United States, Rosenberg's work on epidemics offers a nuanced framing that defines the stages and unfolding trajectories of epidemics. His writing is a good starting point to analyze the scope and challenges of epidemic historiography in South Asia. To redress its gaps, I have suggested an approach focused on writing histories of epidemics "sideways" and examined plague and influenza epidemics to situate the fluid politics of lived risks and marginality, moving away from dominant interpretations that have tried to characterize epidemics as finite and episodic.

On Ideas as Actors: How Ideas about Yellow Fever Causality Shaped Public Health Policy Responses in 19th-Century Galveston.

This article uses debates regarding yellow fever causality among leading healers in 19th-century Galveston, Texas, U.S., as a means of exploring the extent to which ideas are social actors. That is, the analysis demonstrates that ideas about yellow fever causality shaped contemporaneous public health policy responses to yellow fever outbreaks in 19th-century Galveston. The article contributes to the growing literature documenting that contagionist and anticontagionist views were often assimilated, and also supports the historiography showing that the predisposing/exciting causes dichotomy is a

Uncertain advances: a review of the final phases of the smallpox eradication program in India, 1960-1980.

In this article, I describe the complex nature of the final phases of the Indian smallpox eradication program. I examine the unfolding of policies at different levels of administration and the roles played by a wide range of national and international actors. A careful examination of unpublished official correspondence, on which this article is largely based, shows that the program's managers were divided and that this division determined the timing of the achievement of eradication. This material also reveals that Indian health workers and bureaucrats were far more capable of reshaping polici

[Rudolf Virchow 1821-1902. Physician, politician, historian and anthropologist].

Rudolf Virchow was born in Pomerania in 1821 in Prussia/Germany. His father was a cashier. He started his medical studies in 1839 and finished them in 1843. He became one of the most famous physicians of the 19th century, as he founded the "Cellular pathology" theory. This claims that disease and pathological change start in the cell and nowhere else. The ruling medical dogma at that time the "humoral pathology" stated that "body fluids" were in inbalance when a person got sick. Virchow's studies cleaned this out and the hallmark of the "cellular pathology" sounded "omnis cellula e cellula" ("

Wearing the wolf skin: psychiatry and the phenomenon of the berserker in medieval Scandinavia.

This paper examines the berserker, a frenzied warrior attested to in both the written and material sources of medieval Scandinavia, and elucidates the characteristics that define him. It critiques explanations for the phenomenon offered in the existing historiography and whether this can be explained as a psychiatric diagnosis. It concludes that the berserker cannot be simply defined as a culturally bound or other psychiatric syndrome, or accounted for by psychogenic drugs alone. Instead, it proposes that berserk frenzy constituted a transitory dissociative state shared among a small warband s

[CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE HEALTH SITUATION WITHIN THE POPULATION IN SLAVONIA AND SRIJEM DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WITH AN EMPHASIS ON INFECTIOUS DISEASES].

During World War II, the population of agricultural areas of Slavonia and Srijem lived in privation, but there was no famine. A more serious threat was infectious diseases, such as malaria, typhoid fever, and dysentery, which were also present within the population in the post-war period. Major epidemics broke out mostly in areas under partisan control, especially in the areas of western and central Slavonia, where major epidemic typhus contagious broke out. Venereal diseases, less common in the Slavonian area before the war, were also on the rise. Two factors had an impact on the health situa

New books on the early history of British psychoanalysis: An essay review.

Reviews the books, Freud in Cambridge by John Forrester and Laura Cameron and Psychoanalysis in Britain, 1893-1913: Histories and Historiography by Philip Kuhn. Sigmund Freud and his invention of the discipline of psychoanalysis had an immense intellectual impact on 20th-century culture. Yet, although his writings were received with great enthusiasm-as well as with hostility-we are still lacking full accounts of all the various sites where Freud and his ideas were widely discussed and which rapidly paired his name (as early as the 1920s) with those of eminent intellectuals such as Karl Marx, C

[An edition of the Disertación sobre la manía aguda (1827) by physician Diego Alcorta].

The rise of clinical experience in European medicine has by now been the subject of numerous studies dealing with the process of its emergence since the beginning of the nineteenth century. As regards research on this process in the River Plate area, the historiography has devoted more attention to analysis of the institutional development of medical practice than to local physicians' creation of the most important works of medical science. Therefore, this edition of the Disertación de la manía aguda (1827), by physician Diego Alcorta, seeks to shed new light on records of the development of c

Africa and the Cattle Without History.

The premise of this article is that African historiography has yet to embrace the genetic basis of cattle tolerance to tsetse-borne trypanosomiasis due to the literature's emphasis on human illness and landscape modification. By the early 1980s, empirical research indicated that N'Dama cattle possessed a tolerance to the disease that was heritable and, as such, could be strengthened through breeding. The Gambia's first president, who was a former veterinary surgeon, contributed to the breed's reappraisal. In exploring this history, I show how an international scientific network positioned The
