The history of tinnitus: from ancient interpretations to contemporary neuroscience and neuromodulation.

OBJECTIVE: To review the historical evolution of tinnitus from ancient civilizations to contemporary neuromodulation-based therapies. METHODS: A narrative historical review was undertaken using PubMed, Google Scholar, historical archives, classical medical texts, and landmark otological publications. Sources were selected according to historical significance, relevance to tinnitus, and contribution to major shifts in its conceptualisation and management. RESULTS: As a non-systematic narrative review, this study traces the conceptual paradigm shifts in tinnitus understanding. Early civilizati

History of Adrenal Research: From Ancient Anatomy to Contemporary Molecular Biology.

The adrenal is a small, anatomically unimposing structure that escaped scientific notice until 1564 and whose existence was doubted by many until the 18th century. Adrenal functions were inferred from the adrenal insufficiency syndrome described by Addison and from the obesity and virilization that accompanied many adrenal malignancies, but early physiologists sometimes confused the roles of the cortex and medulla. Medullary epinephrine was the first hormone to be isolated (in 1901), and numerous cortical steroids were isolated between 1930 and 1949. The treatment of arthritis, Addison's disea

Ancient Borrelia genomes document the evolutionary history of louse-borne relapsing fever.

Several bacterial pathogens have transitioned from tick-borne to louse-borne transmission, which often involves genome reduction and increasing virulence. However, the timing of such transitions remains unclear. We sequenced four ancient Borrelia recurrentis genomes, the agent of louse-borne relapsing fever, dating from 2300 to 600 years ago. We estimated the divergence from its closest tick-borne relative to 6000 to 4000 years ago, which suggests an emergence coinciding with human lifestyle changes such as the advent of wool-based textiles. Pan-genome analysis indicated that much of the evolu

Ancient Yellow River ancestry and divergent admixture histories in the Qiang people.

The Qiang people are widely recognized as a basal layer of the Chinese gene pool, yet their genetic origins and evolutionary history remain unclear. We analyzed 20 deep-sequenced Qiang genomes together with genomic data from Tibetan highlanders and neighboring lowlanders. The Qiang genetic structure has been profoundly shaped by historical admixture with Han and Tibetans, giving rise to distinct subpopulations. Using ~450 ancient Asian genomes, we traced the most recent common ancestor of the Qiang to ancient Yellow River farmers ~5300 years ago, indicating shared ancestry with other Chinese p

The Natural and Clinical History of Plague: From the Ancient Pandemics to Modern Insights.

The human pathogen Yersinia pestis is responsible for bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic plague. A deeply comprehensive overview of its historical context, bacteriological characteristics, genomic analysis based on ancient DNA (aDNA) and modern strains, and its impact on historical and actual human populations, is explored. The results from multiple studies have been synthesized to investigate the origins of plague, its transmission, and effects on different populations. Additionally, molecular interactions of Y. pestis, from its evolutionary origins to its adaptation to flea-born transmission

Tracing the evolutionary history of the CCR5delta32 deletion via ancient and modern genomes.

The chemokine receptor variant CCR5delta32 is linked to HIV-1 resistance and other conditions. Its evolutionary history and allele frequency (10%-16%) in European populations have been extensively debated. We provide a detailed perspective of the evolutionary history of the deletion through time and space. We discovered that the CCR5delta32 allele arose on a pre-existing haplotype consisting of 84 variants. Using this information, we developed a haplotype-aware probabilistic model to screen 934 low-coverage ancient genomes and traced the origin of the CCR5delta32 deletion to at least 6,700 yea

[History of epistaxis since the ancient times to the first half of the XXth century].

Epistaxis is one of the more frequent entities in the otolaryngological practice. The term is attributed to CULLEN (1785). Since them, multiple theories concerning etiology, clinical manifestacions, diagnosis and management have been reported in the medical literature. Nevertheless, an impressive improvement of awareness about these questions have emerged in the last half of past century. The objective of this work is to revise the history of epistaxis since the ancient times to the first half of the 20th century.

Did an epidemic of tularemia in Ancient Egypt affect the course of world history?

The dynamics of the spreading, and the identity of a virulent epidemic, similar to bubonic plague or typhus, which hit Ancient Egypt in the middle of the Bronze Age, are hereby presented. Documented in medical papyri as well as archaeological findings, and re-echoed in biblical texts, a plague entered Egypt's main harbor, Avaris, around 1715 BC. As a result, the country was severely weakened at a time when it was already facing serious sociopolitical issues: crumbling central government, immigration, foreign influence, and the rise in power of the army and of warlords. The Hebrews, one of the

"At times these ancient facts seem to lie before me like a patient on a hospital bed'--retrospective diagnosis and ancient medical history.

Research in ancient medical history, Greek and Roman as well as Mesopotamian and Egyptian, is usually done by philologically trained scholars; the ability to read texts in their original language is fundamental (though not sufficient) for any substantial work. There is, however, in such works the notion that something may be missing in fully understanding medicine of a certain time and culture. Does a medical historian of ancient medicine need, in addition to his philological and historical skills, a medical education? And in what way is a 'medical approach' to ancient medicine useful? Is it p

[Sculptor of The Cripple of the Geneva Museum of Art and History. An ancient Greek portrayal of hemimelia?].

An archaic Greek terracotta vase in the Art and History Museum at Geneva depicts a man deprived of his left arm and with two legs ending in a stump below the knees. Did he suffer from a traumatism (amputation), a mutilating disease or congenital malformation (hemimelia)? A survey of written and iconographic sources throws light on the methods and limits of ancient surgery, and on the chances of survival of abnormal children in archaic and classical Greece.

Genomic history of the Caucasus: A systematic review and meta-analysis of ancient DNA studies.

The Caucasus region represents a unique natural laboratory for paleogenetic research due to its complex topography, long-standing role as a migratory corridor and glacial refugium, and exceptional preservation conditions for ancient DNA. This review synthesizes recent genome-wide studies to reconstruct the demographic history shaping the distinctive genetic landscape of modern Caucasus populations. The analysis reveals a deep pattern of continuity, isolation, and periodic admixture. Early genetic differentiation emerged in the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, forming distinct steppe and mountain po

Dry powder inhalation, part 1: ancient history and precursors to modern dry powder inhalers.

INTRODUCTION: Inhalation of herbs and other compounds has a long history but habits for medical treatment are intertwined with rituals to obtain hallucinatory effects and pleasurable sensations. Several examples of inhaled herbs, and the diseases they were used for, based on early translations of ancient manuscripts related to inhalation were found to be speculative and inconsistent with each other in literature. They needed to be reconsidered and verified with the original sources of information. AREAS COVERED: Examples of ancient inhalation and the development of early dry powder inhalers u

[About Itching and scabies. Pruritus in medical history--from ancient world to the French revolution].

Pruritus (itching) as a disease state and especially as a disease symptom has been object of medical and scientific descriptions and examinations in all epochs since the antiquity and in different cultural periods. Antiquity was dominated by observations and descriptions but during the course of medical history and particularly since the establishment of dermatology, more and more emphasis has been placed on classification and etiologic research.

Paleogenomics retraces the ancient population history of Southwestern East Asia for the past 12 000 years.

Southwestern East Asia, a key intersection linking southern East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Tibetan Plateau, is a crucial area for the study of early human migrations. However, ancient DNA studies in the eastern part of the region, particularly in Guizhou, are still lacking. We present the first genomic study of Guizhou populations from a time period spanning 12 000 years, including five Guizhou individuals older than 10 000 years. Combined with published Guangxi and Yunnan samples, we reveal a complex genetic history of human populations in southwestern East Asia from the Paleolithic to th

Historical Article: Hirudo medicinalis: ancient origins of, and trends in the use of medicinal leeches throughout history.

Blood letting and the therapeutic use of Hirudo medicinalis date back to ancient Egypt and the beginning of civilisation. Their popularity has varied over the years, reaching such a peak in Europe between 1825 and 1850 that supplies were exhausted. Towards the end of the century they fell out of favour and, during this period, the leech, once used by the physicians of emperors and influential academic surgeons, became associated with lay therapists and quackery. Leeches have enjoyed a renaissance in reconstructive microsurgery during the last 15 years, having been used by maxillofacial [Br. J.

[Knowledge of the "Gräfenberg zone" and female ejaculation in ancient Indian sexual science. A medical history contribution].

Ancient Indian texts in sexology (kamaśastra) from the 11th century onwards prove that their authors knew about the area later termed the "Gräfenberg zone" in Europe, as well as about the female ejaculation connected with the stimulation of this area. The Gräfenberg zone is a sexually arousable zone in the front part of the vagina, stimulation of which can lead to the discharge of liquid from the urethra, a phenomenon which is described as female ejaculation. The german gynaecologist Ernst Gräfenberg, who worked in America, described this zone, situated beneath the clitoris, for the first time

Ancient genomics reveal the evolutionary history and social practice of Gansu populations during prehistory trans-Eurasian exchange.

Beginning approximately 4,000 years ago, southwest-Asian-originating domesticated crops and livestock began appearing in Gansu, a key crossroads in northwestern China, yet the population dynamics underlying these historically transformative events and the associated social practices in the region have not been fully explored. Despite the adoption of western domesticates, genome sequences of 149 individuals from the large Mogou cemetery and ten other sites in Gansu, dating between 4,700 and 3,000 years ago, revealed migrations within East Asian regions but no detectable evidence of genetic infl

Ancient genomes reveal distinct human dispersals and social stratification in the settlement history of western Remote Oceania.

The settlement of western Remote Oceania involved interactions among deeply divergent populations. Initial settlement ∼3,000 years ago by Lapita-associated, Southeast Asian-related groups was followed by Papuan-related expansions and later sea voyages from Polynesia. We present genome-wide data spanning the past three millennia from the eastern Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tonga. We find that the Papuan-related expansion proceeded at a slower pace than the earlier Lapita-associated expansion and reached Fiji through at least two distinct human dispersals, centuries earlier than previous

Human pelvis and long bones reveal differential preservation of ancient population history and migration out of Africa.

One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a wilhin-pupulation decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a data set of postcranial linear measurements for 30
