Childhood incident asthma and traffic-related air pollution at home and school.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution has been associated with adverse cardiorespiratory effects, including increased asthma prevalence. However, there has been little study of effects of traffic exposure at school on new-onset asthma. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the relationship of new-onset asthma with traffic-related pollution near homes and schools. METHODS: Parent-reported physician diagnosis of new-onset asthma (n = 120) was identified during 3 years of follow-up of a cohort of 2,497 kindergarten and first-grade children who were asthma- and wheezing-free at study entry into the South

Indoor and outdoor bioaerosol levels at recreation facilities, elementary schools, and homes.

One major deficiency in linking environmental exposure to health effects is the current lack of data on environmental exposure. Therefore, to address this issue, the present study measured the bacterial and fungal concentrations in the indoor and outdoor air from two types of recreation facility (42 bars and 41 Internet cafes), 44 classrooms at 11 elementary schools, and 20 homes under uncontrolled environmental conditions during both summer and winter. No major environmental problems were reported at the four microenvironments being investigated during the entire study period. Bacteria and fu

Home and school urban food environments in relation to childhood overweight and obesity in Madrid.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the availability of unhealthy food outlets in children's home and school environments and overweight/obesity in Madrid, while exploring effect modification by sex and family affluence. METHODS: We used individual-level data from a survey of 5,961 children aged 3 to 12 years. We created 400-m and 800-m street-network buffers around home and school addresses and counted the number of unhealthy food outlets within home, school, and combined home-school food environments. We estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using r

EnComCol Study on the diet of children and young people at home and in schools: design and methodology.

EnComCol is an observational, crosssectional, multicentre study assessing diet in Spanish children and adolescents (6-17 years) by comparing intake at home with that in the school canteen. It is framed by the continuing burden of childhood overweight/obesity and Royal Decree 315/2025, which harmonises criteria for school menus and portions. The main aim is to identify differences in foods, beverages and nutrient intake according to canteen use, school ownership (public, charter, or private) and residence across six mainland regions, considering six daily mealtimes eating occasions. The sample

Differences in socio-demographic and environmental exposures at home vs. school in the ECHO cohort.

BACKGROUND: Social and environmental exposures, typically characterized at residential locations, are linked to adverse respiratory outcomes in children; yet, children spend a significant amount of time in school. Little is known about how socio-demographic and environmental exposures vary between home and school settings. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to compare home and school exposures and to assess whether these differences were consistent across cities and varied by home-school distance. METHODS: Home and school addresses were geocoded for 6-13 year olds (n = 923) from t

Home confinement's impact on myopia control by using orthokeratology in school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Home confinement during the epidemic has a significant impact on the lifestyle and behavior of school-aged children, who have exhibited an increase in the prevalence and development of myopia. Our research will look at if home confinement will affect school-aged children on myopia control with orthokeratology. METHOD: Data on axial length was gathered from school-aged children who had received OK lenses treatment. The entire data was separated into subgroups based on gender, age, and initial refraction, and the AL changes for each period were calculated using the formula defined i

A follow-up study of the influence of early malnutrition on development: behavior at home and at school.

A follow-up study of home and classroom behavior was conducted on 216 children, 9 through 15 years of age, half of whom had histories of moderate-severe protein energy malnutrition (marasmus) during the first year of life. Behavior was measured by two rating scales, administered to teachers and parents of the children. Observations made by teachers and parents were significantly correlated on 33% of the 41 overlapping items in the two questionnaires. The history of malnutrition had a significant association with attention deficits in children up to 15 years reported by parents and teachers, ev

Testing Homes for Potential Sources of Lead Exposure as a High-School Science Project.

High-school students tested soil, paint, and water for lead (Pb) in a total of 80 houses in their town of Pelham, New York, where blood-Pb data indicate relatively high levels of child exposure. All the samples were tested in the laboratory using established procedures but this was preceded by testing of soil and paint in the field with a kit by the students. The total Pb concentration in 32 of the 159 soil samples that were collected exceeded 400 ppm, the EPA standard for bare soil in residential areas where children play. Only 4 of the 118 tap water samples that were collected contained over

Respiratory health among Korean pupils in relation to home, school and outdoor environment.

There are few studies about school-environment in relation to pupils' respiratory health, and Korean school-environment has not been characterized. All pupils in 4th grade in 12 selected schools in three urban cities in Korea received a questionnaire (n = 2,453), 96% participated. Gaseous pollutants and ultrafine particles (UFPs) were measured indoors (n = 34) and outdoors (n = 12) during winter, 2004. Indoor dampness at home was investigated by the questionnaire. To evaluate associations between respiratory health and environment, multiple logistic- and multi-level regression models were appl

The Impact of School Strategies and the Home Environment on Home Learning Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Children With and Without Developmental Disorders.

Using the Opportunity-Propensity Model (Byrnes in Dev Rev 56:100911, 2020; Byrnes & Miller in Contemp Educ Psychol 32(4);599-629, 2007), the current study investigated which factors helped predicting children's home learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby examining differences between children with (DD; n = 779) and without (TD; n = 1443) developmental disorders. MANCOVA results indicated more negative experiences for DD children and their parents. SEM-results revealed the alignment between different teachers and autonomous motivation in children as the most important predic

Anxiety disorders and depression among high school adolescents and youths in Nigeria: Understanding differential effects of physical abuse at home and school.

Despite the exposure of children to physical abuse in more than one setting in many regions of the world, little is known about the associations of physical abuse in different settings (e.g., at home and school) with anxiety disorders and depression among adolescents and youths. Using a convenience sample of 502 adolescents and youths ages 13-23 years from five public and three private senior secondary schools in Nigeria, the study examined associations of gender and physical abuse by parents with anxiety disorders as well as associations of physical abuse by parents and/or teachers with depre

Script fading for children with autism: Generalization of social initiation skills from school to home.

We used a script-fading package to teach children with autism to initiate social interactions across various activities in the school setting, and we programmed for generalization in the untrained home setting with a sibling. The three participants, ages 8 to 10 years, demonstrated deficits in social initiations with their peers. During baseline, the participants emitted initiations to one another, although this behavior was variable and did not endure over time. With the introduction of the script-fading package, however, social initiations systematically increased. Moreover, the effects of t
