COVID-19, Virtual Engagement and the Psychoid Imagination.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on analytic training and the delivery of educational content is explored here. The proliferation of Zoom therapy and teaching is creating a post-human platform to which nearly everyone in contemporary society has had to adapt. Looking at the possible meanings of the pandemic, a psychoid factor (the virus) engaging the imagination has come to the fore as a response to climate change. The striking similarity to the H1N1 viral pandemic ("Spanish flu") is noted, especially in the context of C. G. Jung having had a case in 1919 during which he experienced a numbe

Toxins in thrombosis and haemostasis: potential beyond imagination.

Exogenous factors isolated from venoms of snakes and saliva of haematophagous animals that affect thrombosis and haemostasis have contributed significantly to the development of diagnostic agents, research tools and life-saving drugs. Here, I discuss recent advances in the discovery, structural and functional characterisation, and mechanism of action of new procoagulant and anti-haemostatic proteins. In nature, these factors have evolved to target crucial 'bottlenecks' in the coagulation cascade and platelet aggregation. Several simple protein scaffolds are used to target a wide variety of tar

Creativity and imagination in autism and Asperger syndrome.

Three studies are reported that address the often described impoverished creativity in autism. Using the Torrance Creativity Tests, Experiment 1 found that children with autism and Asperger syndrome (AS) showed impairments. Experiment 2 tested two explanations of these results: the executive dysfunction and the imagination deficit hypotheses. Results supported both hypotheses. Children with autism and AS could generate possible novel changes to an object, though they generated fewer of these relative to controls. Furthermore, these were all reality-based, rather than imaginative. Experiment 3

Episodic and semantic memory contributions to imagination and creativity.

The ability to generate novel creative ideas (divergent thinking) is closely linked with our ability to imagine novel future events (episodic simulation). Here, we employed an individual differences approach to examine whether divergent thinking and episodic simulation are differentially associated with episodic and semantic retrieval ability. In response to object word cues, participants generated meanings and definitions (semantic memory), remembered a past event (episodic memory), imagined a novel future event (episodic simulation), or generated novel uses (divergent thinking). Replicating

Visual hallucinations in schizophrenia: confusion between imagination and perception.

OBJECTIVE: An association between hallucinations and reality-monitoring deficit has been repeatedly observed in patients with schizophrenia. Most data concern auditory/verbal hallucinations. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between visual hallucinations and a specific type of reality-monitoring deficit, namely confusion between imagined and perceived pictures. METHOD: Forty-one patients with schizophrenia and 43 healthy control participants completed a reality-monitoring task. Thirty-two items were presented either as written words or as pictures. After the presentatio

Drawing ability in autism: a window into the imagination.

This study investigated imagination via drawing tasks, in 15 children with autism and 15 children with Asperger Syndrome, compared to verbal mental age matched normal children and children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). Experiment 1 used the Draw an Impossible Man Task. While children with autism were impaired relative to the normal group, they were not impaired relative to the children with MLD. In order to probe for an imagination deficit, Experiment 2 employed a more challenging measure of imaginative drawing, a task involving mixing categories to produce drawings of real or unr

On the medical history of the doctrine of imagination.

In the early modern era the notion of imagination was made responsible for phenomena which were later explained in terms of embryology, genetics, psychology, bacteriology or other scientific disciplines. Images, often seated in the upper abdomen (hypochondriac region) or the womb (hysteria), were regarded as powerful influences on material reality. In the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the hypochondriac forms of imagination became mere whims and spleens, but they kept much of their original potency in respect of the uterus, accounting for monstrosities and the shaping of hu

Who is Missing From the Picture? Recognition, Enactment, and Containment in Lucy Lafarge's "The Imaginer and the Imagined".

This paper offers a critical yet appreciative reading of Lucy LaFarge's essay, arguing that it unfolds through a sustained play of presence and absence: between what is stated and what remains backgrounded, between explicit theory and tacit assumptions, between observational distance and the analyst's implication. At its center is the imaginer/imagined formula, treated as an unconscious phantasy that organizes reciprocal expectations and that, in clinical work, comes into view as a shared scene rather than a purely individual "distortion." The author brings out the essay's unspoken dialogue wi

On Lafarge's Paper "The Imaginer and the Imagined": To Know the Other, to be Known by the Other, to be Owned/Disowned by the Other.

This paper elaborates on Lucy LaFarge's thought-provoking paper "The Imaginer and the Imagined," focusing on how projective identification shapes unconscious phantasies within the analytic relationship. It argues that in narcissistic patients early phantasies of being known (imagined) by the primary object, together with the wish to know the object's phantasies about oneself, may-when dominated by excessive projective identification-undermine the experience of separateness between self and other. Instead, they become conflated with a phantasy of owning and being owned by the object. This might

Beyond Knower and Known: The Evolution of a Personal Core Theory in "The Imaginer and the Imagined" and Related Works.

Lucy LaFarge's "The Imaginer and the Imagined" (2004) is read both for its position within the development of her personal core theory of psychoanalysis (LaFarge 2017) and as part of an approach (if not a solution) to wider problems about such roles as knower and known, doer and done-to, and most broadly self and other. The way and extent to which such relations may be adversarial or collaborative is framed from specific existential and intersubjective perspectives, which have seen the Other or the second person as objectifying or subjectivizing. LaFarge's evolving view of the imagining and im

A world without tuberculosis: moving from imagination to reality.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, remains a leading cause of death from an infectious agent, resulting in more than a million deaths per year. Despite vaccines and chemotherapies, patients often harbor persister M. tuberculosis cells that resist immune assault and chemotherapeutic treatments, resulting in a latent TB infection (LTBI). In this issue of the JCI, Sharan et al. used an aerosol-based macaque model to show that weekly treatments with isoniazid and rifapentine for 3 months reduced active M. tuberculosis infection and LTBI. Lung tissue from treated ani

Motor execution and imagination networks in post-stroke dystonia.

Reorganization of motor execution and imagination networks was studied in six patients with unilateral dystonia secondary to a subcortical stroke and compared with seven control subjects using fMRI. Patients performed imagined and real auditory-cued hand movements. Movements of the dystonic hand resulted in overactivity in bilateral motor, premotor, and prefrontal cortex, insula, precuneus, and cerebellum, in parietal areas and the striatum contralateral to the lesion. Movements of the unaffected hand resulted in overactivity in bilateral preSMA, prefrontal, and parietal areas, insula and cere

Gallbladder Polyps: Real or Imagined?

The finding of gallbladder polyps on imaging studies prompts further workup. Imaging results are often discordant with final pathology. The goal of this study is to compare polypoid lesions of the gallbladder found on preoperative ultrasound (US) with final pathologic diagnosis after cholecystectomy to help guide clinical decision-making. A retrospective study was conducted identifying adult patients who were diagnosed with polyps via US and who underwent cholecystectomy from 2008 through 2015. Imaging data, final pathology, and demographics were manually reviewed. A total of 2290 cholecystect

Re-imagining interstitial cystitis.

Since the postulation of an "antiproliferative factor" in 1998 and a description, six years later, of this putative central protein in the etiologic pathway of the painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis, there have been no dramatic breakthroughs in the field. Although much potentially exciting work is in progress with regard to epidemiology, etiology, and clinical treatment, many clinicians and researchers have used this hiatus to take another look at what exactly is being studied and how the syndrome should be approached. This article explores some of the current "hot-button" issues o

Attribute centrality and imaginative thought.

Participants' representations of the concept human were examined to differentiate three types of associations between concepts and their component attributes: the capacity of concepts to cue attributes (attribute accessibility), the capacity of attributes to cue concepts (instance accessibility), and the extent to which attributes are thought of as central to concepts (attribute centrality). The findings provide information about the concept human itself and, more generally, about the functionally distinct roles those different attribute-concept associations play in guiding imaginative thought

How can folklore build children's imagination: A systematic literature review.

Folklore is a cultural medium that transmits values, traditions, and collective knowledge across generations, and it is considered a powerful tool to stimulate children's imagination as well as support their cognitive and socio-emotional development. This study aims to address the role of folklore in fostering children's imagination, particularly within elementary school contexts. This study employed a systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines, with relevant articles identified from Scopus and Web of Science databases using keywords related to folklore, imagination, and children

Anomalies of imagination and development of psychosis: A phenomenological account.

In 20th century psychiatry, various disturbances of imagination were discussed in the context of schizophrenia. Today, these notions have almost completely vanished from mainstream psychopathology. However, recent work has suggested that specific phenomena within this area have a relevance for differential diagnosis and early detection of psychosis. This paper first provides an overview of 20th century psychopathological literature, as well as more recent neurocognitive studies, addressing disturbances of imagination and their role for symptom formation in schizophrenia. It then discusses rece

The human imagination: the cognitive neuroscience of visual mental imagery.

Mental imagery can be advantageous, unnecessary and even clinically disruptive. With methodological constraints now overcome, research has shown that visual imagery involves a network of brain areas from the frontal cortex to sensory areas, overlapping with the default mode network, and can function much like a weak version of afferent perception. Imagery vividness and strength range from completely absent (aphantasia) to photo-like (hyperphantasia). Both the anatomy and function of the primary visual cortex are related to visual imagery. The use of imagery as a tool has been linked to many co

Interactions among the imagination, expertise reversal, and element interactivity effects.

Interactions among the imagination, expertise reversal, and element interactivity effects were investigated in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, less knowledgeable primary school students learning to use a bus timetable produced better performance under study than imagination conditions, but an increase in their experience reversed the result, producing the imagination effect. Experiment 2, in which students were taught to use a temperature line graph, replicated these results and demonstrated that the effects were more likely to be obtained using complex material. It was concluded that learners
