The evolutionary ecology of inbreeding depression in wild plant populations and its impact on plant mating systems.

Inbreeding depression, the reduced fitness of inbred relative to outbred individuals was described more than two centuries ago, long before the development of population genetics. Its impact is central to evolutionary ecology and the evolution of mating systems, in particular self-fertilization in hermaphrodites. In the first half of the 20th century, population genetics revealed a mechanism for inbreeding depression through homozygosity. Numerous theoretical studies have modeled inbreeding depression as a function of genetic architecture and analyzed how it varies with population selfing rate

Evaluating inbreeding and assessing the risk of outbreeding depression in genetic rescue using whole-genome sequence data.

Restoring genetic diversity through assisted migration is increasingly recognized as a crucial strategy to counteract inbreeding depression and boost genetic variation in small and fragmented populations yet concerns about outbreeding depression often hinder its application. We propose a genomics-informed update to an existing framework enabling a more precise assessment of outbreeding depression risk and genetic rescue feasibility. We apply this approach to a butterfly species-the marsh fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia)-which has faced severe range contractions and near-extinction in Denmark. W

Genome-wide assessment and mapping of inbreeding depression identifies candidate genes associated with semen traits in Holstein bulls.

BACKGROUND: The reduction in phenotypic performance of a population due to mating between close relatives is called inbreeding depression. The genetic background of inbreeding depression for semen traits is poorly understood. Thus, the objectives were to estimate the effect of inbreeding and to identify genomic regions underlying inbreeding depression of semen traits including ejaculate volume (EV), sperm concentration (SC), and sperm motility (SM). The dataset comprised ~ 330 K semen records from ~ 1.5 K Holstein bulls genotyped with 50 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) BeadChip. Genomic

Susceptibility to a sexually transmitted disease in a wild koala population shows heritable genetic variance but no inbreeding depression.

The koala, one of the most iconic Australian wildlife species, is facing several concomitant threats that are driving population declines. Some threats are well known and have clear methods of prevention (e.g., habitat loss can be reduced with stronger land-clearing control), whereas others are less easily addressed. One of the major current threats to koalas is chlamydial disease, which can have major impacts on individual survival and reproduction rates and can translate into population declines. Effective management strategies for the disease in the wild are currently lacking, and, to date,

Brothers are better than nothing: first report of incestuous mating and inbreeding depression in a freshwater decapod crustacean.

This study aimed at evaluating the effect of one generation of full-sibling mating on traits related to the fitness of the gregarious freshwater shrimp Neocaridina davidi, both under optimal and stressful (i.e. starvation) laboratory conditions. Females were maintained either with their brothers (Inbreeding treatment) or non-brothers (Outbreeding treatment), and the first and second broods were used to evaluate egg production and juvenile quality, respectively. The latter was analyzed in a 60-day period following hatching under optimal rearing conditions, and in a 20-day period following hatch

Evolution of mixed mating: Effects of among-parent variation in early-acting inbreeding depression coupled with overproduction of ovules.

Theoretical models were developed to propose a new mechanism enhancing mixed mating (reproduction by both outcrossing and selfing) in hermaphroditic plants; mixed mating can be maintained if there exists among-parent variation in early-acting inbreeding depression in embryos and parents can replace dead embryos by overproduction of ovules. In the two main models developed, the number of embryos produced is allowed to evolve, parents may overproduce embryos, and among-parent variation in early-acting inbreeding depression does not exist or exists. I found that mixed mating does not evolve if am

Limited Lifetime Costs of Inbreeding in a Large Wild Population of Superb Fairy-Wrens.

Inbreeding depression can have major negative effects on both individual fitness and population performance. The impact of inbreeding depression in wild populations remains poorly understood, and our knowledge is primarily based on estimations in insular populations with limited dispersal, which has been predicted to enhance the capacity for outcrossing. Limited migration and small population sizes, which make insular and endangered populations tractable models for fieldwork, often experience low genetic variation and may be subject to stronger inbreeding effects. Estimating inbreeding effects

Inbreeding reduces the ability of young to exploit high-resource nurseries.

Parents of many species create a "nursery" in which young develop, and variation in this environment can influence offspring phenotype and fitness. Recent studies have demonstrated that behavioural interactions within these nurseries may moderate inbreeding depression. However, whether other features of the nursery impact inbreeding depression, either directly or through secondary impacts on behaviour, has been less well studied. Here, I describe two experiments involving the burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, in which I test (1) whether inbreeding depression is sensitive to the size of t

Fisher's automatic advantage of self-fertilization does not apply in cleistogamous species.

PREMISE: In hermaphroditic plants, the evolution of self-fertilization is driven by two major forces; the cost of outcrossing or Fisher's automatic advantage of selfing and inbreeding depression. Seminal theoretical works have established that an inbreeding depression threshold of 0.5 governs the evolution. Below that threshold, selfing evolves, above that, outcrossing evolves. Does this threshold apply to cleistogamous plants? METHODS: I developed a model using a Lloydian approach to analyze the evolution of cleistogamy. RESULTS: I showed that the inbreeding depression threshold does not ap

Inbreeding Effects upon Growth and Maternal Ability in Laboratory Mice.

The effects of systematically increasing levels of inbreeding upon growth and postnatal maternal ability were determined in laboratory mice by utilizing the reciprocal crossfostering technique. Two experiments were conducted. The first included postnatal dams which were inbred 0, 12, 25 and 38% while corresponding levels in the litter were 0, 22, 38 and 50%, respectively. The second experiment included 0, 25, 50 and 73% inbred dams with litters inbred 0, 38, 59 and 79%, respectively. Increasing the level of inbreeding was found to linearly depress postnatal maternal performance. Young which ha

Optimal outbreeding is shaped during larval life history in the splash pool copepod Tigriopus californicus.

Inbreeding and outbreeding depression are dynamic forms of selection critical to mating system evolution and the efficacy of conservation biology. Most evidence on how the relative severity and timing of these forces are shaped is confined to self-fertilization, distant outcrossing, and intermediate "optimal outcrossing" in hermaphrodites. We tested the notion that closed population demographics may reduce and delay the costs of inbreeding relative to distant outbreeding in an intertidal copepod with separate sexes and a biphasic larval/post-metamorphic life history (Tigriopus californicus). Testing the Mating System Model of Parasite Complex Life Cycle Evolution Reveals Demographically Driven Mixed Mating.

AbstractMany parasite species use multiple host species to complete development; however, empirical tests of models that seek to understand factors impacting evolutionary changes or maintenance of host number in parasite life cycles are scarce. Specifically, one model incorporating parasite mating systems that posits that multihost life cycles are an adaptation to prevent inbreeding in hermaphroditic parasites and thus preclude inbreeding depression remains untested. The model assumes that loss of a host results in parasite inbreeding and predicts that host loss can evolve only if there is no

Fitness Regulates Non-Native Species Recovery in a Simulated Trojan MYY Brook Trout Application.

Trojan Y chromosome methodologies have been developed for bio-control of non-native freshwater fish. Individuals with an altered sex chromosome genotype are introduced into the environment to mate with wild conspecific and change the population sex ratios, with the goal of eradicating local populations. This strategy preserves native stocks and can be effective when other methods are impracticable. Applications employing Trojan males with two Y chromosomes (MYY) to control non-natives have shown promise for eradication at small spatial scales when used with manual suppression. Failure to eradi

Inbreeding and disease avoidance in a free-ranging koala population.

Habitat destruction and fragmentation are increasing globally, forcing surviving species into small, isolated populations. Isolated populations typically experience heightened inbreeding risk and associated inbreeding depression and population decline; although individuals in these populations may mitigate these risks through inbreeding avoidance strategies. For koalas, as dietary specialists already under threat in the northern parts of their range, increased habitat fragmentation and associated inbreeding costs are of great conservation concern. Koalas are known to display passive inbreeding

Characterizing genome-wide changes associated with inbreeding tolerance in cranberry: insights into homozygosity and heterozygosity.

The American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is an important native North American fruit. Cranberry is a self-fertile woody perennial. As part of an ongoing breeding and genetics program, inbred lines have been developed to help understand the effects of inbreeding in cranberries and to develop near-homozygous lines. Self-pollination can lead to a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. As the effects propagate through generations, the loss of genetic diversity in offspring can cause reduced vigor, size of fruit and vegetative organs, and overall fitness. Our early observations suggested

Comparing the hermaphroditic mating system of a parasitic flatworm between populations with an ancestral, three-host life cycle and a derived, facultative precocious life cycle.

Evolutionary changes in development and/or host number of parasite life cycles can have subsequent ecological and evolutionary consequences for parasites. One theoretical model based on the mating systems of hermaphroditic parasites assumes a life cycle with fewer hosts will result in more inbreeding, and predicts a truncated life cycle most likely evolves in the absence of inbreeding depression. Many populations of the hermaphroditic trematode Alloglossidium progeneticum maintain an ancestral obligate three-host life cycle where obligate sexual reproduction occurs among adults in catfish thir

Family-level covariation between parasite resistance and mating system in a hermaphroditic freshwater snail.

Genetic compatibility, nonspecific defenses, and environmental effects determine parasite resistance. Host mating system (selfing vs. outcrossing) should be important for parasite resistance because it determines the segregation of alleles at the resistance loci and because inbreeding depression may hamper immune defenses. Individuals of a mixed mating hermaphroditic freshwater snail, Lymnaea ovata, are commonly infected by a digenetic trematode parasite, Echinoparyphium recurvatum. We examined covariation between quantitative resistance to novel parasites and mating system by exposing snail f

Conservation genetics of Nordic carnivores: lessons from zoos.

This paper summarizes results from genetic studies of Nordic carnivore populations bred in captivity. The conservation genetic implications of those results for the management of wild populations of the same species are discussed. Inbreeding depression has been documented in the brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus), and lynx (Lynx lynx) populations held in Nordic zoos. The characters negatively affected by inbreeding include litter size (brown bear and wolf), longevity (lynx and wolf), female reproduction, and weight (wolf). In addition, hereditary defects caused by single autosomal a

Dioecy in a wind-pollinated herb explained by disruptive selection on sex allocation via inbreeding avoidance.

The evolution of dioecy from hermaphroditism is widely thought to be a response to disruptive selection favoring males and females, driven by advantages of inbreeding avoidance, sexual specialization, or both. It has hitherto been difficult to uncouple the importance of these two hypotheses. We use phenotypes produced by experimental evolution to test the inbreeding avoidance hypothesis in populations from which sexual specialization can be effectively ruled out. We estimate the selfing rate and the shape of fitness gain curves under scenarios with and without inbreeding depression in experime

Wolbachia promotes successful sex with siblings in the parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor.

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia are intracellular α-proteobacteria that have a wide distribution among various arthropods and nematodes. They affect the host reproduction favoring their maternal transmission, which sets up a potential conflict in inbreeding situations when the host avoids sexual reproduction preventing inbreeding depression, while Wolbachia pushes it. We used the wasp Habrobracon hebetor to test the hypothesis that Wolbachia modulates inbreeding avoidance behavior and promotes sib mating. RESULTS: Our results showed no obvious pre-copulatory inbreeding avoidance in this wasp. However,
