Study of intra-abdominal fat distribution in sigmoid colon cancer in Japanese patients by use of MDCT data.

To assess the relationship between intra-abdominal fat and sigmoid colon cancer, we investigated the intra-abdominal fat distribution in 172 examples of sigmoid colon cancer and 767 examples of various other pathologies by using data from multidetector-row computed tomography. One significant finding was that the intra-abdominal fat area in sigmoid colon cancer presents a small secondary peak in the pelvis on the profile of the intra-abdominal fat, which we called the pelvic sub-peak. The presence or absence of the pelvic sub-peak was determined based on the sub-peak ratio, which was calculate

Pseudoneoplastic Fat Atrophy of Intra-Abdominal Sites: A Clinicopathologic Study of 16 Cases Representing a Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Patients undergoing periods of starvation or malnutrition may develop degenerative and/or atrophic changes of various organs. These findings may manifest histologically and may cause confusion when first encountered, raising a differential that includes benign and malignant tumor entities. Herein, we report 16 cases of incidentally identified degenerative changes within abdominal-site fatty tissues that caused diagnostic difficulties. The patients were 11 males and 5 females, aged from 1 day to 82 years (mean: 58 years). The degenerative changes were all incidentally identified within adipose

Supra-hepatic gallbladder in cirrhosis presenting as a mimic of intra-abdominal fat necrosis: Diagnostic pitfalls and clinical implications.

UNLABELLED: Supra-hepatic gallbladder is an exceptionally rare form of ectopic gallbladder. Its identification can be particularly challenging in patients with cirrhosis, where distortion of hepatic architecture obscures expected anatomical relationships. This report describes a case of supra-hepatic gallbladder in a patient with chronic liver disease, in which surrounding inflammatory oedema mimicked intra-abdominal fat necrosis, creating a significant diagnostic dilemma on imaging. CONTRIBUTION: This case underscores the importance of recognizing unusual gallbladder locations, understanding

The activity of mate saponins (Ilex paraguariensis) in intra-abdominal and epididymal fat, and glucose oxidation in male Wistar rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hilaire (mate) has traditionally been used in several South American countries to prepare tea-like beverages having stimulant effects on the CNS and appetite. In recent years, however, mate preparations have been recommended putatively as an appetite suppressant and slimming remedy. Moreover, studies carried out on either normal or diet-induced obese rats treated with mate extracts revealed anti-obesity and satiety effects, thus refuting ethnopharmacological data. In this work, the effect of mate on the intra-abdominal and epididymal f

Computed tomography with intravenous contrast alone: the role of intra-abdominal fat on the ability to visualize the normal appendix in children.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) with enteric contrast is frequently used to evaluate children with suspected appendicitis. The use of CT with intravenous (IV) contrast alone (CT IV) may be sufficient, however, particularly in patients with adequate intra-abdominal fat (IAF). OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed 1) to determine the ability of radiologists to visualize the normal (nondiseased) appendix with CT IV in children and to assess whether IAF adequacy affects this ability and 2) to assess the association between IAF adequacy and patient characteristics. METHODS: This was a retrospective

Signals from intra-abdominal fat modulate insulin and leptin sensitivity through different mechanisms: neuronal involvement in food-intake regulation.

Intra-abdominal fat accumulation is involved in development of the metabolic syndrome, which is associated with insulin and leptin resistance. We show here that ectopic expression of very low levels of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in epididymal fat (Epi) reverses both insulin and leptin resistance. UCP1 expression in Epi improved glucose tolerance and decreased food intake in both diet-induced and genetically obese mouse models. In contrast, UCP1 expression in Epi of leptin-receptor mutant mice did not alter food intake, though it significantly decreased blood glucose and insulin levels. Thus,

Ultrasonographic evaluation of intra-abdominal fat distribution and study of its influence on subclinical atherosclerosis in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate abdominal fat distribution and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and to determine the independent risk factors for subclinical atherosclerosis. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and twenty-four women with PCOS were compared with 118 age and BMI-matched controls. Abdominal obesity was assessed as the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and abdominal fat distribution was measured as subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), pre-peritoneal fat thickness (PFT) and visceral fat thickness (VFT) using Ultrasound (US). Markers of subclinical ather

Computed Tomography-based Assessment of Visceral Fat for Predicting Intra-abdominal Infectious Complications After Gastrectomy in Patients With Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications after gastrectomy, potentially due to increased visceral fat and greater technical difficulty during surgery. The body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to assess obesity. However, it does not adequately reflect fat distribution. This study evaluated the association between the visceral fat area (VFA) measured on preoperative computed tomography (CT) and intra-abdominal infectious complications (IAIC) after gastrectomy for gastric cancer (GC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 183 patients who underwent

Quantitative CT analysis of intra-abdominal fat, subcutaneous fat, and bone mineral density disparities in individuals with obesity and obstructive sleep apnea compared to those with obesity alone.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to utilize quantitative computed tomography (QCT) to compare body composition parameters and bone mineral density (BMD) between two distinct patient groups: individuals with obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and those with obesity alone (non-OSA group). By systematically evaluating QCT-derived metrics, we seek to identify specific imaging biomarkers that may aid in distinguishing OSA among obese individuals and to assess their potential diagnostic utility. METHODS: A total of 77 patients from Yan'an Hospital Affiliated with Kunming Medical University were enr

Abundant macroscopic fat in intra-abdominal lymph nodes involved in the course of a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: presentation of imaging findings with biopsy correlation.

The presence of a small amount of macroscopic fat is not unusual in the hilar region of normal lymph nodes. However, abundant replacement of the lymph node with fat is highly unusual and may appear as metastatic lymph node disease in the course of fat-predominant liposarcomas or in the case of coeliac disease complicated by cavitating lymph node syndrome. In this case report, a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma who demonstrated an increasing abundance of macroscopic fat in the diseased lymph nodes is presented. To the best of our knowledge, the imaging findi

Estrogen improved metabolic syndrome through down-regulation of VEGF and HIF-1α to inhibit hypoxia of periaortic and intra-abdominal fat in ovariectomized female rats.

Metabolic syndrome (MBS), a cluster of metabolic abnormalities and visceral fat accumulation, increases cardiovascular risks in postmenopausal women. In addition to visceral fat, perivascular adipose tissue has been recently found to play an important role in vascular pathophysiology. Hence, the present study investigates the effects of estrogen on both intra-abdominal fat (visceral fat) and periaortic fat (perivascular fat) accumulation as well as hypoxia in ovariectomized female rats. Female rats were divided into sham operation, ovariectomy and ovariectomy with 17β-estradiol supplementation

Intra-abdominal fat estimation by bio-electrical impedance analysis in patients with fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes compared with BMI matched type 2 diabetic subjects and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAAT) is a major contributor to insulin resistance (IR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Prior studies have demonstrated evidence of IR in fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes (FCPD). However, no data exists on IAAT estimation in FCPD. Hence, we compared IAAT area among FCPD patients and an equal number of body mass index (BMI) matched T2D patients and healthy controls. METHODS: We recruited 60 patients with FCPD between January 2019 and February 2020. Body composition analysis was performed via bio-electrical impedance analysis. RESULTS:

The association between the visceral to subcutaneous abdominal fat ratio and the risk of cardiovascular diseases: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the primary cause of mortality globally. The prevalence of obesity is rising worldwide; there seems to be a significant positive association between obesity and CVDs. The distribution of fat in the abdominal area in the form of visceral (VAT) or subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) affects the risk of CVDs. The aim of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of the available literature regarding the association between the VAT-to-SAT ratio and CVDs. METHODS: A comprehensive search strategy was used to retrieve all human observational stu
