Jet lag and motion sickness.

Jet lag. Present day aircraft operating round northern and southern latitudes cross time zones at almost the same rate as the earth rotates, and it is these rapid transmeridian transitions that lead to the syndrome commonly referred to as jet lag. On arrival at their destination, individuals find themselves out of synchrony with the social and time cues of their new environment and, until they adapt, may experience symptoms such as malaise, gastrointestinal disturbance, loss of appetite, tiredness during the day and poor sleep. The severity and exact nature of the problems vary with the direct

The linkage between chronotype, social jetlag, and responses to sleep inertia.

This research explores the interplay between chronotype, sleep inertia (SI), and social jetlag (SJL), examining whether an interaction between chronotype and SJL increases susceptibility to SI in individuals with an evening chronotype, due to their more pronounced SJL. However, a minimal correlation between SJL and SI was observed. The study included 231 participants, all of whom completed a series of questionnaires, including the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ), and the Sleep Inertia Questionnaire (SIQ). Our findings indicated that indiv

Frequent Shifts During Chronic Jet Lag Uncouple Liver Rhythms From the Light Cycle in Male Mice.

Circadian disruption is pervasive in modern society and associated with increased risk of disease. Chronic jet lag paradigms are popular experimental tools aiming to emulate human circadian disruption experienced during rotating and night shift work. Chronic jet lag induces metabolic phenotypes tied to liver and systemic functions, yet lack of a clear definition for how rhythmic physiology is impaired under these conditions hinders the ability to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here, we compared 2 common chronic jet lag paradigms and found that neither induced arrythmicity of the

Rapid Jetlag Resetting of Behavioral, Physiological, and Molecular Rhythms in Proestrous Female Mice.

A gradual adaptation to a shifted light-dark (LD) cycle is a key element of the circadian clock system and believed to be controlled by the central circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Endocrine factors have a strong influence on the regulation of the circadian clock network and alter acute photic responses of the SCN clock. In females, endocrine function depends on the stage of the ovarian cycle. So far, however, little is known about the effect of the estrous cycle on behavioral and molecular responses to shifts in the LD rhythm. Based on this, we investigated whether estr

Travel-Induced Circadian and Microbiota Disturbances: Implications for Athlete Health and Performance: A Narrative Review.

High-performance athletes are increasingly exposed to frequent trans-meridian travel, leading to profound circadian desynchronization and gastrointestinal distress. This review examines the complex interplay between the host's central circadian system and the gut microbiota (GM), both of which exhibit synchronised daily oscillations essential for homeostasis. Rapid time-zone transitions, such as those anticipated for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, induce a state of "gut jet lag," characterised by the loss of rhythmic microbial functions and impaired intestinal barrier integrity. Circadian misalignme

Examination of sleep factors affecting social jetlag in Japanese male college students.

We hypothesized that social jetlag would be associated with prolonged sleep duration on weekends and irregularities in wake-up time and/or bedtime on weekdays. In total, 1,200 Japanese male college students were included in this study. Participants completed an eight-day sleep diary in which they recorded their wake-up time, bedtime, and sleep duration every day for a week. Mean wake-up time, bedtime, and sleep duration, standard deviations in wake-up time and bedtime, the coefficient of variation in sleep duration, social jetlag, and chronotype were calculated over seven nights. Multiple regr

Chronic Jet Lag Exacerbates Jejunal and Colonic Microenvironment in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that circadian rhythm disorder is associated with a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, and the circadian rhythm plays a key role in maintaining the homeostasis of intestinal flora. The underlying mechanisms are still not completely identified. This study was aimed to explore whether jet lag-caused circadian disruption influences gut microbiome and its metabolites. METHODS: Mice were synchronized with 12-h light/dark cycles (control group) or subjected to daily 8-h advance of the light/dark cycle for every 3 days (jet-lagged group). Four months later, fecal sam

[Diagnosis and comorbidities of Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders].

Circadian rhythm sleep disorders (CRSD) result from a disturbed endogenous clock (intrinsic CRSD) or from a misalignment between the biological clock and an imposed environment (extrinsic CRSD). Among intrinsic CRSD, one distinguishes the delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, the advanced sleep-wake phase disorder, the irregular sleep-wake rhythm disorder and the non-24-hour sleep-wake rhythm disorder. Shift work disorder, jet lag disorder and circadian sleep-wake disorder not otherwise specified are extrinsic CRSD. Prevalences of the different CRSD remain largely unknown. Some CRSD are particula

Chronotype-specific Sleep in Two Versus Four Consecutive Shifts.

The study aimed to explore chronotype-specific effects of two versus four consecutive morning or night shifts on sleep-wake behavior. Sleep debt and social jetlag (a behavioral proxy of circadian misalignment) were estimated from sleep diary data collected for 5 weeks in a within-subject field study of 30 rotating night shift workers (29.9 ± 7.3 years, 60% female). Mixed models were used to examine whether effects of shift sequence length on sleep are dependent on chronotype, testing the interaction between sequence length (two vs. four) and chronotype (determined from sleep diaries). Analyses

Stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α alleviates osteoarthritis via interacting with Per2 and resetting the circadian clock.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to establish whether HIF1α entrains the core clock in chondrocytes and how the HIF1α affects the circadian rhythm. METHODS: We subjected primary chondrocytes to chronic circadian desynchrony (CCD) and subsequently treated with oxygen rhythm and dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG). Circadian oscillations were analyzed with a real-time monitoring system of Per2 promoter activity and qPCR. Chondrocytes were assayed core clock genes expression patterns and extracellular matrix metabolism. HIF1α siRNA was used to knock down HIF1α. ChIP-qPCR and dual-luciferase reporter assay we

[Social jetlag: possibilities of micronutrient support].

The concept of social jetlag refers to asynchronous communication of a person's biological clock with tempo of modern living, which occurs mainly as a result of intensive work. At the core of social jetlag is sleep deprivation or chronic sleep restriction caused by social factors: pervasive use of electronic solutions and networks, intensive round the clock operation, chronic diseases. The aim of the work was to determine vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients, the availability of which is important for supporting the organism in case of circadian rhythm sleep disorders and sleep restric

The effect of jet lag on the human brain: A neuroimaging study.

Jet lag is commonly experienced when travelers cross multiple time zones, leaving the wake-sleep cycle and intrinsic biological "clocks" out of synchrony with the current environment. The effect of jet lag on intrinsic cortical function remains unclear. Twenty-two healthy individuals experiencing west-to-east jet lag flight were recruited. Brain structural and functional magnetic resonance studies, as well as psychological and neurohormonal tests, were carried out when participants returned from travel over six time zones and 50 days later when their jet lag symptoms had resolved. During jet l

The roles of task persistence and sleepiness in the associations between habitual sleep characteristics and vigilant attention in elementary school children.

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether parent/guardian-reported task persistence accounted for associations of sleep duration, social jetlag, and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) risk with Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT) performance, and whether subjective sleepiness showed comparable indirect associations. METHODS: A total of 2010 elementary school children in Tokyo, Japan, completed the PVT during morning classroom sessions on standardized laptops. Parents/guardians reported habitual sleep duration, social jetlag, Japanese version of Severity Hierarchy Score (J-SHS)-based SDB risk, and task persi

Is the association between social jetlag and BMI mediated by lifestyle? A cross-sectional survey study in the Dutch general population.

OBJECTIVE: Social jetlag is a discordance between the social and biological rhythm and is associated with higher HbA1c, higher BMI, and higher odds of obesity. The pathways that could explain these associations are still debated. This study aims to assess the mediating role of several lifestyle factors in the cross-sectional association between social jetlag and BMI. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from 1784 adults from urban areas in the Netherlands, collected in 2019. Social jetlag (difference in midpoint of sleep between week and weekend nights) was categorized as low(<1 h), moderate

Experimental 'jet lag' causes sympathoexcitation via oxidative stress through AT1 receptor in the brainstem.

Circadian disruptions through frequent transmeridian travel, rotating shift work, and poor sleep hygiene are associated with an array of physical and mental health maladies, including the abnormal autonomic nervous system. We have demonstrated that the oxidative stress through AT(1) receptor in the brain activates sympathetic nervous system. The aim of the present study was to determine whether experimental 'jet lag' causes sympathoexcitation via oxidative stress through AT(1) receptor in the cardiovascular center of the brainstem (rostral ventrolateral medulla; RVLM) or not. Experimental 'jet

Impact of circadian rhythm disruption on biochemical parameters in mice.

Disruption of circadian rhythm is common in rotating shift workers, individuals with jet lag, and people with irregular sleep schedules and contributes to metabolic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma. To delineate early metabolic consequences of circadian disruption, we examined glucose, iron, and lipid homeostasis in a murine model of chronic jet lag. Mice were exposed to a validated protocol in which the light cycle was advanced by 8 hours every 2 days, and blood was collected at four Zeitgeber t

Association between social jetlag and anxiety symptoms: Findings from a nationally representative sample of the Korean working population.

OBJECTIVES: Social jetlag (SJL), which arises from the misalignment of biological and social rhythms, is associated with adverse health outcomes. We explored the association between SJL and anxiety symptoms in Korean workers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a nationally representative sample, consisting of 2731 adult workers. SJL was calculated as the absolute difference in the midpoint between sleep onset and offset times on workdays and free days. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale was used to assess anxiety symptoms. Logistic regressions were used to estimate the odds ra

Influence of social jetlag on daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnea.

Social jetlag is the discrepancy between socially determined sleep timing on workdays and biologically determined sleep timing on days free of social obligation. Poor circadian timing of sleep may worsen sleep quality and increase daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We analysed de-identified data from 2,061 participants (75.2% male, mean [SD] age 48.6 [13.4] years) who completed Sleep Apnea Global Interdisciplinary Consortium (SAGIC) research questionnaires and underwent polysomnography at 11 international sleep clinic sites. Social jetlag was calculated as the absolute differ
