OBJECTIVES: We examined whether parent/guardian-reported task persistence accounted for associations of sleep duration, social jetlag, and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) risk with Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT) performance, and whether subjective sleepiness showed comparable indirect associations.

METHODS: A total of 2010 elementary school children in Tokyo, Japan, completed the PVT during morning classroom sessions on standardized laptops. Parents/guardians reported habitual sleep duration, social jetlag, Japanese version of Severity Hierarchy Score (J-SHS)-based SDB risk, and task persistence. Subjective sleepiness was assessed using the child-reported Karolinska Sleepiness Scale immediately before the PVT and the Parent/guardian-reported Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire-Sleepiness scale. Structural equation modeling estimated direct and indirect associations with grade-residualized, z-standardized PVT outcomes, adjusting for sex, body mass index z-score, screen time, and allergic diseases.

RESULTS: Greater social jetlag and higher J-SHS were associated with lower task persistence (β = -0.068, p = 0.01; β = -0.102, p < 0.001), whereas longer sleep duration was positively associated with task persistence (β = 0.051, p = 0.04). Lower task persistence was associated with poorer PVT performance across outcomes (β = -0.191 to -0.055; all p ≤ 0.02). Indirect associations via task persistence were observed for social jetlag and SDB risk (indirect β = 0.005-0.009 and 0.009-0.019, respectively), whereas subjective sleepiness showed no comparable associations.

CONCLUSIONS: Parent/guardian-reported task persistence showed small statistical indirect associations linking social jetlag and symptom-based SDB risk with PVT performance, whereas subjective sleepiness showed no comparable indirect associations. Task persistence may be an everyday self-regulatory correlate of sleep-related daytime functioning in children.
