The gut-joint axis: Genetic evidence for a causal association between gut microbiota and seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis.

This study aimed to assess the causal relationship between GM and RA (seropositive RA and seronegative RA). A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to assess the causality of GM on seropositive RA and seronegative RA. GM's genome-wide association study (GWAS) was used as the exposure, whereas the GWAS datasets of seropositive RA and seronegative RA were the outcomes. The primary analysis approach was used as inverse-variance weighted (IVW), followed by 3 additional MR methods (MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode). Cochran's Q test was used to identify heteroge

Development of an innovative intravaginal model of probiotic inoculation in dairy ovine flocks: positive effects on the vaginal microbiota, vaginitis and fertility.

In vitro studies have reported the antimicrobial effect of an inoculum (L2) made from commercial probiotic strains of Lactobacillus spp. (Lactobacillus (L.) crispatus, L. brevis and L. gasseri) against some ruminants' pathogens. However, their possible beneficial effects on controlling the vaginosis caused by the use of intravaginal sponges for oestrus synchronisation have not been evaluated in in vivo models. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to perform an intravaginal double inoculation of this same non-lyophilised (non-freeze-dried) L2 inoculum, in 120 ewes from four dairy commercial

Association of sputum microbiota profiles with severity of community-acquired pneumonia in children.

BACKGROUND: Competitive interactions among bacteria in the respiratory tract microbiota influence which species can colonize and potentially contribute to pathogenesis of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). However, understanding of the role of respiratory tract microbiota in the clinical course of pediatric CAP is limited. METHODS: We sought to compare microbiota profiles in induced sputum and nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal (NP/OP) samples from children and to identify microbiota profiles associated with CAP severity. We used 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing and several measures of microbiota prof

Ribosomally synthesized bacteriocins of lactic acid bacteria: Simplicity yet having wide potentials - A review.

Bacteriocins are ribosomally made bacterial peptides that have outstanding contributions in the field of food industry, as biopreservatives, and promising potentials in the medical field for improving human and animal health. Bacteriocins have many advantages over antibiotics such as being primary metabolites with relatively simpler biosynthetic mechanisms, which made their bioengineering for activity or specificity improving purposes much easier. Also, bacteriocins are degraded by proteolytic enzymes and do not stay in environment, which reduce chances of developing resistance. Bacteriocins c

Fruits and fruit by-products as sources of bioactive compounds. Benefits and trends of lactic acid fermentation in the development of novel fruit-based functional beverages.

Current awareness about the benefits of a balanced diet supports ongoing trends in humans towards a healthier diet. This review provides an overview of fruits and fruit-by products as sources of bioactive compounds and their extraction techniques, and the use of lactic acid fermentation of fruit juices to increase their functionality. Fruit matrices emerge as a technological alternative to be fermented by autochthonous or allochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB such as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and other Lactobacillus species), and also as probiotic vehicles.

Selective expansion of gut antibiotic resistome and underlying pathways involved in type 1 diabetes.

Selective expansion of gut antibiotic resistance genes (including glycopeptides, tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramins, and beta-lactams) was observed in type 1 diabetic rats. Interestingly, a similar expansion of gut antibiotic resistome occurred in diabetic patients. Selective expansion of gut antibiotic resistome was correlated with hyperglycemia and gut microbial community (particularly order Lactobacillales, such as species Lactobacillus johnsonii, Limosilactobacillus urinaemulieris, and Streptococcus hyointestinalis). Furthermore, activation of peptidoglycan biosynthesis an

Tryptamine accumulates in cheese mainly via the decarboxylation of tryptophan by lactic acid bacteria.

Few microorganisms are known to decarboxylate L-tryptophan, thereby producing tryptamine, a neuromodulator biogenic amine (BA) that can accumulate in cheese. Since lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are largely responsible for the production of other BA in this product, it was hypothesised that they would also be the main agents of tryptamine production. Using a rapid test based on the natural fluorescence of tryptamine, thousands of bacterial isolates from several cheese samples were screened. Only 1.4% of all isolates (43 out of 2982) were able to synthesise tryptamine and secrete it into the cultur

Pediococcus inopinatus with a well-developed CRISPR-Cas system dominates in long-term fermented kimchi, Mukeunji.

Kimchi is produced through a low-temperature fermentation without pre-sterilization, resulting in a heterogeneous microbial community. As fermentation progresses, dominant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) species emerge and undergo a transition process. In this study, LAB were isolated from Mukeunji, a long-term fermented kimchi that is in the final stage of kimchi fermentation process. It was confirmed, through culture-dependent and independent analysis, as well as metagenome analysis, that Pediococcus inopinatus are generally dominant in long-term fermented kimchi. Comparative analysis of the de n

Effects of the addition of fumaric acid on the spontaneous alcoholic fermentation of white grape must.

Consumer demand is driving the production of wines without added sulfur dioxide or yeast inoculation. However, this approach can lead to organoleptic defects or health risks due to unwanted microbial activity during alcoholic fermentation (AF). Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), responsible for malolactic fermentation (MLF), may also affect wine quality. Fumaric acid (FUM) inhibits LAB growth and could serve as an alternative to SO₂ in controlling MLF. The objective of this work was to study the effects of adding FUM (0.6 g/L) to natural white grape must without SO2 on the growth of LAB during sponta

Investigation on L-rhamnose metabolism of Loigolactobacillus coryniformis subsp. coryniformis DSM 20001 and its propionate-containing fermentates.

Propionate is an important short-chain carboxylic acid (SCCA) that serves as an effective antimicrobial agent for food preservation. Previous research has highlighted that few Lactobacillaceae can synthesize propionate by metabolizing deoxyhexoses via the fermentation intermediate 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD). In this study, we investigated propionate production by Loigolactobacillus coryniformis subsp. coryniformis DSM 20001 while utilizing L-rhamnose as the primary carbon source. We cultivated L. coryniformis in small-scale anaerobic bioreactors at 30°C and pH 6.5 for 72 h and monitored the expr

Yogurt Production.

Yogurt is a widely consumed dairy product that is obtained through the fermentation of lactic acid bacteria. During fermentation, these bacteria produce lactic acid, which lowers the pH and causes the coagulation of milk proteins. Metabolites of lactic acid bacteria, such as carbonyl compounds, nonvolatile or volatile acids, and exopolysaccharides, significantly affect the quality of yogurt. The production method also greatly influences yogurt characteristics. Yogurt can be produced in various forms, including solid, fluid, and soft-drinking types, depending on the manufacturing method employe
