Fine-tuned large language models enhance influenza forecasting.

Influenza-like illness (ILI) remains a persistent global health challenge, necessitating accurate forecasting tools for timely public health response. This study systematically benchmarks fine-tuned large language models (LLMs), e.g., Llama2 and GPT2, for influenza surveillance forecasting in data-limited time-series settings. We develop a lightweight fine-tuning framework that adapts pre-trained LLMs using compact embedding and prediction layers and evaluate it on seven weekly aggregated real-world surveillance datasets. Despite sample sizes of only ∼523 time points per region and the absence

Accountability for large language models in health care.

Large language models are entering clinical workflows faster than health-care institutions can assign responsibility for their failures. This situation is creating governance gaps with consequences that extend beyond individual patients to public health systems. The result is an accountability vacuum in which responsibility for harm mediated by large language models can be spread across clinicians, institutions and vendors. This responsibility gap distributes harm inequitably, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where regulatory infrastructure for digital health is still developin

Evaluating multiple large language models on orbital diseases.

The avoidance of mistakes by humans is achieved through continuous learning, error correction, and experience accumulation. This process is known to be both time-consuming and laborious, often involving numerous detours. In order to assist humans in their learning endeavors, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) has been developed as a collection of large language models (LLMs) capable of generating responses that resemble human-like answers to a wide range of problems. In this study, we sought to assess the potential of LLMs as assistants in addressing queries related to orbital diseas

Combining generative large language models and pretrained language models for predicting acute respiratory distress syndrome progression.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition in which early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial. Recent research into machine learning for predicting ARDS progression based on objective clinical data has been hindered by the limited availability of high-quality annotated datasets. Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) have shown promising results in various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, especially in unstructured electronic health records, but their application to numerical clinical data has been constrained by data type limitations. This study in

Language-agnostic, Automated Assessment of Listeners' Speech Recall Using Large Language Models.

Speech-comprehension difficulties are common among older people. Standard speech tests do not fully capture such difficulties because the tests poorly resemble the context-rich, story-like nature of ongoing conversation and are typically available only in a country's dominant/official language (e.g., English), leading to inaccurate scores for native speakers of other languages. Assessments for naturalistic, story speech in multiple languages require accurate, time-efficient scoring. The current research leverages modern large language models (LLMs) in native English speakers and native speaker

Large language models in adolescent suicide prevention: from language signals to accountable action.

Adolescent suicide risk is often expressed through language before it becomes visible in clinical encounters, yet current prevention still relies heavily on episodic screening and limited specialist resources. Large language models (LLMs) may help interpret crisis chats, clinical notes, school-counseling records, and online disclosures, but their relevance to public mental health depends on a practical question: can language signals lead to timely and accountable human action? This mini review examines LLMs in adolescent suicide prevention through this Evidence-to-Action perspective. Current e

Detecting Stigmatizing Language in Clinical Notes with Large Language Models for Addiction Care.

RATIONALE: Recent studies have found that stigmatizing terms can incline physicians to pursue punitive approaches to patient care. The intensive care unit (ICU) contains large volumes of progress notes that may contain stigmatizing language, which could perpetuate negative biases against patients and affect healthcare delivery. Patients with substance use disorders (alcohol, opioid, and non-opioid drugs) are particularly vulnerable to stigma. This study aimed to examine the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the identification of stigmatizing language from ICU progress notes of pat

Large language models for interpretation of health checkup results.

Large language models (LLMs) show strong generalization, yet their ability to interpret structured medical data remains insufficiently studied. This work evaluated four LLMs-Claude Sonnet 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-4o, and LLaMA 3.1-70B-using comprehensive health checkup data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Multiple prompting strategies (few-shot, role-based, constraint-based, and Chain-of-Thought) were tested. Zero-shot accuracy averaged 0.69 (SD 0.06), increasing to 0.92 (0.06) with combined strategies and to 0.95 (0.07) with Chain-of-Thought. Claude Sonnet 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro,

Leveraging Large Language Models for Personalized Parkinson's Disease Treatment.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) treatment is challenging due to symptom heterogeneity and the lack of a definitive cure. Lifelong medication requires personalized treatment plans developed by physicians, but such approaches are constrained by high costs and limited physician capacity. Although deep learning (DL) methods have been explored, they lack interpretability and are restricted to numerical data inputs. In this study, we propose a novel framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) to design personalized PD treatment strategies, integrating both patient information in natural language
