[Case report of Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome].

We report a case of Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl Syndrome with all five recognised features: tapetoretinal dystrophy, polydactily, obesity, mental retardation and hypogonadism. Nevertheless the correct diagnosis was delayed due to the fact, that the patient has a macular dystrophy (instead of a pigmentary retinopathy). He had an operation of the polydactily during childhood. This was not revealed at first. The case underlines the importance of an exact anamnesis of the parents.

The renal lesion of the Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome.

In nine children with the Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome a high incidence of nephropathy was documented. Renal involvement was noted in seven patients before or simultaneously with the diagnosis of LMBS. Five have uremia and two have died. All patients had an abnormal urogrum. The spectrum of renal lesions ranged from mesangial tissue proliferation to glomerular clerosis, interstitial scarring, and medullary and cortical cyst formation. A relationship between the lesions seen in the LMBS and those of other hereditary retinal-renal conditions is suggested.

Otolaryngologic features of Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

The most common otolaryngologic features associated with LMBBS include SNHL, speech and language disorders, and oral and dental abnormalities. Early otolaryngologic, audiologic, speech pathology, and dental evaluation of these individuals is recommended. This is the first reported case of bifid epiglottis, a rare congenital laryngeal anomaly, found in association with LMBBS. Most patients with bifid epiglottis have additional congenital anomalies, most commonly polysyndactyly. Polysyndactyly is a feature of both LMBBS and bifid epiglottis and may be an early hallmark for the presence of other

Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome: report of two cases.

The Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome is characterized by features of familial occurrence, retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, polydactyly, hypogenitalism and mental retardation. Recently, several reports have suggested renal abnormalities as an additional cardinal feature of the syndrome. We present two cases of this syndrome from two different families. The first case was an obese eight-year-old girl with poor vision and signs of mental retardation beginning at four months of age. An intravenous urogram showed dilatation of the minor calyces of both kidneys. Genital agenesis and typical retinitis pigm

Ocular findings in the Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

PURPOSE: To improve the description of the ocular part of the Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome. METHODS: We examined 44 Scandinavian individuals who all had retinal dystrophy plus at least 2 more of the traditional cardinal signs of the syndrome: obesity, hypogenitalism, polydactyly and mental retardation. RESULTS: Full-field electroretinograms were obtained in 36 of the individuals and were abnormal in all. The dark adaptation thresholds were elevated by on average 3.5 log units. Symptoms of night blindness were observed at a mean age of 4 years and visual problems at daytime at 6-7 year

[Laurence-Moon (Bardet-Biedl) syndrome with growth hormone deficiency].

BACKGROUND: The features of Laurence-Moon syndrome vary widely from mental retardation, hypogenitalism to retinopathy; the dominant one is progressive neurological involvement, ataxia and spastic paraplegia. Like Bardet-Biedl syndrome, its inheritance is autosomal recessive. This paper describes the endocrine investigation of a new family of Laurence-Moon syndrome subjects. CASE REPORT: The 5 patients (3 girls, 2 boys) in this family of 12 sibs, all suffered from retinopathy, mental retardation and first metacarpal hypoplasia with proximal placement of thumb. All five had had spastic parapleg…

Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome accompanied by congenital hepatic fibrosis.

A 33 year old woman with mental deficiency, retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, and parental consanguinity (heredity) was diagnosed as having Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome. She also had diabetes mellitus, slight hepatic dysfunction, and hepatomegaly. Liver biopsy showed perilobular fibrosis and bile duct proliferation with cystic dilatation; these findings are consistent with those of congenital hepatic fibrosis.

Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome: electrophysical and psychophysical findings.

Four cases of Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome were studied through electrophysiological and psychophysical examinations, and findings were correlated with those of fluorescein angiography. In all cases the macula showed degenerative changes, including a bull's eye appearance. The fundus periphery could be devoid of clumps of pigmentation, but all cases showed profound functional abnormalities that affected the macula and the periphery, impairing both the cone and rod systems equally. Bull's eye macula associated with severe, diffuse functional abnormality of the macula and peripheral retin

Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome associated with diabetes insipidus neurohormonalis.

The case of a girl with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome without polydactyly is described. Additional features were small stature, diabetes insipidus neurohormonalis and a renal disorder. The diabetes insipidus neurohormonalis was successfully treated with a new vasopressin analogue, DDAVP. The importance of renal studies in patients with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome is emphasized.

Congenital renal abnormalities in the Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome.

Two children with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome had radiographic evidence of cysts in the renal medulla, and one had impaired renal function and infection. The frequency of cystic disease in this syndrome implies that intravenous urography should be carried out on all patients with this syndrome. Children with renal abnormalities should be followed to avoid further damage from urinary infection, or from dehydration in those with a concentrating defect. Regular renal function tests should be carried out on other children. and full investigation should follow if abnormalities are found in order t

Histopathology of mitochondrial cytopathy and the Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome.

Clinical and histopathological studies of two patients with distinctly different inherited juvenile retinal dystrophies indicate that the ocular defect in mitochondrial cytopathy involves the underlying pigment epithelium, whereas in the Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome the photoreceptor cells are primarily affected.

The cause of death in Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

The certificates of death of 14 deceased patients with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl (LMBB) syndrome, in which retinal dystrophy is dominant feature, were review. Death occurred at a considerably younger age than in the general population. Renal disease was noted as primary or contributing cause of death in 7 cases with the diagnoses: cyst of the kidney, renal sclerosis, renal failure, proteinuria, renal disease unspecified and malignant hypertension with renal involvement. It is concluded that renal involvement is characteristic of individuals with LMBB syndrome and seems to reduce life expectan

The spectrum of renal disease in Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome.

To determine the nature, extent, and severity of renal involvement in Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome (obesity, mental retardation, polydactyly, hypogonadism, and pigmented retinal dystrophy), we evaluated 20 of 30 patients with the disorder identified from ophthalmologic records in Newfoundland. The mean age was 31 years, and seven were male. All 20 patients had structural or functional abnormalities of the kidneys or both. Three had end-stage renal disease, with two requiring maintenance hemodialysis. The remaining 17 patients had normal serum creatinine values and estimated creatinine clearanc

Quadriparesis in the Laurence-Moon-Biedl-Bardet syndrome: case report.

A 36 year old patient known to suffer from the Laurence-Moon-Biedl-Bardet syndrome (LMBBS) developed spastic quadriparesis. The typical features of the syndrome, presented by this patient were polydactyly, obesity, hypogonadism, retinitis pigmentosa and relative mental retardation. Severe spinal cervical and lumbar canal stenosis imaged by plain X-rays and computerised tomography was found. Magnetic resonance imaging showed significant atrophy of the spinal cord, indicating that the cause of the quadriparesis was cervical myelopathy. The patient underwent laminoplasty with some improvement.
