Inflammation is a key feature of atherosclerosis and its clinical manifestations. The leukocyte count is a marker of inflammation that is widely available in clinical practice. This paper reviews the available epidemiologic evidence for a relationship between the leukocyte count and coronary heart disease (CHD). Numerous epidemiologic and clinical studies have shown leukocytosis to be an independent predictor of future cardiovascular events, both in healthy individuals free of CHD at baseline and in patients with stable angina, unstable angina, or a history of myocardial infarction. This relat

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Inflammatory markers predict first-time ischemic events. We investigated whether leukocyte and differential counts predict recurrent events and ischemic events in high-risk populations, and whether such events are preceded by acutely exacerbated inflammation.
METHODS: We studied 18 558 patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease who participated in the trial of Clopidogrel versus Aspirin in Patients at Risk of Ischemic Events (CAPRIE), a study that compared the occurrence of ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or vascular de

Background: Post-ischemic inflammatory response might be affected by many factors. We chose leukocyte count as a marker of inflammatory response and investigated whether the effects of leukocyte count on the clinical outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients are different according to different factors. Methods: We derived data from the China National Stroke Registry II. Patients with ischemic stroke were classified into four groups by leukocyte count quartiles within the first 24 h after admission. Adverse clinical outcomes were defined as recurrent stroke, all-cause death, and poor function

INTRODUCTION: Elevated proinflammatory cytokines are associated with disease progression in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of study is to investigate whether components of peripheral blood leukocyte are associated with clinical symptoms in patients with de novo PD.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 123 newly diagnosed de novo patients who had no focal and systemic inflammatory diseases. Associations between clinical symptoms and differential leukocyte count (DLC) or DLC associated peripheral inflammatory biomarkers were examined.
RESULTS: Altered DLC and DLC associated peripher

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether white blood cell (WBC) count with differential analysis may predict severity of disease in acute appendicitis.
METHODS: We conducted this retrospective study on appendectomy patients from 1996 to 2001, at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We reviewed patient's age, gender, duration of symptoms, temperature on admission, WBC count including differential and the histological diagnosis of the appendicular specimen. We further analyzed the data of those patients found to have acute, gangrenous and perforated appendicitis to determine

Interpretation of leukograms of 181 infants with acute otitis media purulenta (OMP) has shown that these patients had leukopenia in 15.5%, normal leukocyte count in 66.3%, leukocytosis in 6.6%, neither neutrophylesis with a left shift nor toxic granularity of leukocytes, neutropenia in 13.8%, neutrophylesis in 5%, monocytopenia in 87.8%, normal lymphocyte count in 78.6%, lymphocytopenia in 21.2%. The leukograms of the infants with acute OMP evidence for low tension of normal adaptation reactions. This may help in assessment of the efficacy of on-going treatment.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare disorder involving pathological platelet-von Willebrand factor interaction, resulting in microvascular thrombosis. The consumption of platelets in TTP microthrombi results in severe thrombocytopenia which resolves with resolution of the microvascular thrombosis. Over the course of treatment, patient platelet counts often rise and fall multiple times before stable remission is achieved. On casual inspection, we noted that total leukocyte counts follow a pattern that appears to correspond to platelet counts. To explore whether changing leukocyt

Introduction Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common cause of acute abdomen in young adults. The diagnosis is usually made on various clinical findings. However, a missed case of acute appendicitis is a catastrophe as it later presents with life-threatening complications and results in medicolegal issues. Raised total leukocyte count (TLC) is a frequent finding in patients with acute appendicitis. As a convention, a normal leukocyte count usually rules out the differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Recent studies claimed that a substantial proportion of patients with normal TLC also

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating disease, in the majority of cases caused by a rupture of an arterial intracranial aneurysm. The effect of systemic low-grade inflammation on incidence of SAH is not known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between leukocyte count, a marker of systemic inflammation, and incidence of SAH in a large cohort study.
METHODS: Leukocyte count and other cardiovascular risk factors were measured in 19,794 individuals (17,083 men and 2,711 women, mean age 44 years) participating in a health screening program between 197

Reference values for blood cell count are not established at birth in Mali. This study aimed to determine reference values for erythrocyte and leukocyte at birth in Bamako. Blood was collected from the umbilical cord immediately following its clamping and studied for complete blood cell count in 481 newborns with a birth weight > 2500g, Apgar score ≤ 7 at 5 or 10 minutes, without abnormal hemoglobin mutations and whose mothers were willing in Bamako, Mali. Other than the median and mean values, 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles were calculated. The findings suggest that the normal reference values foll

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and white blood cell (WBC) count are routine blood chemistry parameters for the early assessment of wound infection after surgical procedures, little is known about the natural history of their serum values after major and minimally invasive spinal procedures.
METHODS: Pre- and postoperative CRP serum levels and WBC count in 347 patients were retrospectively assessed after complication-free, single-level open posterior lumbar interlaminar fusion (PLIF) (n = 150) for disc degeneration and spinal stenosis and endoscopically assis

The total and differential leukocyte counts of 238 infants with acute gastroenteritis were evaluated as an aid in differentiating between nonbacterial and bacterial infection. In contrast to the total leukocyte count, which was noncontributory, the absolute band count and the ratio between band and total neutrophil count (B/N ratio) were helpful, with the highest values seen in patients with Shigellosis. A B/N ratio greater than 0.10 can help differentiate Shigella, Salmonella, and Campylobacter infections from E. coli and nonbacterial gastroenteritis with a sensitivity of 84.3 per cent and a

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a key feature of heart failure including HFpEF. The leukocyte count is a marker of inflammation that is widely used in clinical practice. However, there is little available evidence for the relationship between leukocyte count and the outcomes of HFpEF.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the TOPCAT (Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist) trial. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality, the secondary outcome was composite cardiovascular events and hospitalization for heart failure. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard m

In order to study the value of leukocyte counts and quantitative microbiologic cultivation of milk in the diagnosis of puerperal mastitis, 491 milk samples from nursing women were examined. In milk samples from mammary glands without inflammatory symptoms, leukocyte counts were less than 10(6)/ml of milk, and the milk was sterile or harbored less than 10(3) bacteria/ml. Samples from mammary glands with inflammatory symptoms could be divided into three groups. In one group, leukocyte counts were less than 10(6)/ml of milk, and cultivation results were similar to those of mammary glands without

The leucocyte counts in the peripheral blood and titers of the serum lysozyme under conditions of various experimental models were compared. Albino rats, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits exposed to the effect of various factors of a biological and chemical nature were used in the experiments. In addition, observations on humans immunized with bacterial and viral vaccines were analyzed. Development of 3 reaction types was shown to be possible. In the 1st type the dynamics of the lysosome activity and blood leucocyte counts changed in the same way (immunization with smallpox vaccine, listeria infec

Coronary heart disease incidence during 1958-1974, in a cohort of Hiroshima and Nagasaki residents, was found to relate significantly (p = 0.01) to total leukocyte count, taken an average of two years earlier. Relative risks, as a function of leukocyte count, did not appear to depend on sex or cigarette smoking status, but may be larger for subjects less than 65 years of age than for older persons. This study examines, for the first time, differential leukocyte counts and percentages in relation to coronary heart disease incidence. Both neutrophil count and eosinophil count significantly relat

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary disease that causes deoxygenated erythrocytes to stiffen, resulting in vaso-occlusive crises, endothelial damage, organ failure and systemic consequences. An abnormal leukocyte count is associated with a worse clinical picture in SCD.
METHODS: I studied the link between an abnormal leukocyte count and sickle cell disease. I used the PRISMA guidelines to conduct a systematic review of 5 different clinical literatures that discussed the link. Use of databases including Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, EMBASE,

According to the compensatory prophylaxis hypothesis, women in the luteal phase, characterized by a high progesterone level, which suppresses various mechanisms of immune response, should exhibit higher disgust sensitivity, compared to the follicular phase. In this study we test the hypothesis on the compensatory role of disgust sensitivity at the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, when immune functions are expected to change due to a rise in progesterone level. Disgust sensitivity, progesterone level (P) and white blood cell count (WBC), a general marker of immunocompetence, were measured i
