Using Systemic Functional Linguistics in the Clinical Management of Neurogenic Communication Disorders: An Introduction and Worked Example.

BACKGROUND: The ability to converse with others enables us to participate in everyday life. People with neurogenic communication disorders (NCDs), such as aphasia or traumatic brain injury (TBI), often experience difficulties engaging in conversation. While Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) has been used to analyze conversations involving people with NCDs, its application to clinical assessment and intervention remains limited. AIMS: The primary aim of this paper is to make the case for Systemic Functional Linguistics as a clinically useful framework for understanding, assessing, and supp

Dissociating linguistic and non-linguistic gesture processing: electrophysiological evidence from American Sign Language.

A fundamental advance in our understanding of human language would come from a detailed account of how non-linguistic and linguistic manual actions are differentiated in real time by language users. To explore this issue, we targeted the N400, an ERP component known to be sensitive to semantic context. Deaf signers saw 120 American Sign Language sentences, each consisting of a "frame" (a sentence without the last word; e.g. BOY SLEEP IN HIS) followed by a "last item" belonging to one of four categories: a high-close-probability sign (a "semantically reasonable" completion to the sentence; e.g.

Visual Attention and Linguistic Preferences in Time-Telling: A Cross-Linguistic Study of German, Czech, and Russian Speakers.

This study investigates how speakers’ initial fixations on analog clock regions (minute vs. hour hand) align with the production of relative and absolute time expressions in German, Czech, and Russian. Building on previous research on linguistic preferences in time‑telling, we tested whether fixation patterns primarily reflect syntactic word order, language‑specific expression preferences, or the interaction of both factors. Eye‑tracking data revealed broadly similar fixation patterns across languages for relative expressions: all groups tended to fixate first on the minute hand, consistent wi

Rigidity in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Unified (Evolutionary) Account of Salient Linguistic and Non-Linguistic Characteristics.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically exhibits stereotyped or repetitive behavior that can be described as rigid, but also certain characteristics in the domain of language that can equally be characterized as rigid. These include heightened, enhanced sensitivity to the rules of grammar (morpho-syntax), often resulting in hyper-systemizing, as well as rigidity interpreting metaphorical, non-literal language. Human cognition and behavior (including language) believably resulted from an intense feedback loop between an increase in cognitive flexibility (primarily through a gradual emergence a

Naming of grammatical classes in frontotemporal dementias: linguistic and non linguistic factors contribute to noun-verb dissociation.

We studied noun and verb naming in three main variants of frontotemporal dementia: the frontal variant(Fv-FTD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and semantic dementia (SD). We further distinguished PPA in nonfluent and fluent forms and restricted diagnosis of SD to subjects with progressive semantic breakdown leading to agnosia for words and objects. Fv-FTD and nonfluent-PPA named objects better than actions, SD showed an inverse dissociation and no specific pattern emerged in fluent-PPA. In this last group, in spite of the broad definition of fluent aphasia, quite heterogeneous patterns of l

Cross-linguistic patterns in the acquisition of quantifiers.

Learners of most languages are faced with the task of acquiring words to talk about number and quantity. Much is known about the order of acquisition of number words as well as the cognitive and perceptual systems and cultural practices that shape it. Substantially less is known about the acquisition of quantifiers. Here, we consider the extent to which systems and practices that support number word acquisition can be applied to quantifier acquisition and conclude that the two domains are largely distinct in this respect. Consequently, we hypothesize that the acquisition of quantifiers is cons

Ordinal linguistic personification as a variant of synesthesia.

This study examines the principles underlying ordinal linguistic personification (OLP): the involuntary and automatic tendency in certain individuals to attribute animate-like qualities such as personality and gender to sequential linguistic units (e.g., letters, numerals, days, months). This article aims to provide four types of evidence that OLP constitutes a form of synesthesia and is likely to have the same neurodevelopmental basis. We show that (a) OLP significantly co-occurs with other variants of synesthesia, (b) OLP associations (like those of synesthesia) are highly consistent over ti

Linguistic resources of individuals with Asperger syndrome.

In this paper the available literature on the communication skills of individuals with Asperger Syndrome (AS) is reviewed. Current issues regarding diagnosing and understanding disorders with a core social deficit are examined as well as the potential application of sociolinguistic analyses to the study of Asperger Syndrome, such as that provided from within a Systemic Functional Linguistic framework. The need for investigations that address a broader view of "language" and its use in social situations by individuals with AS as opposed to their mastery of syntactic aspects of language, will be

Schizophrenia and the structure of language: the linguist's view.

Patients with schizophrenia often display unusual language impairments. This is a wide ranging critical review of the literature on language in schizophrenia since the 19th century. We survey schizophrenic language level by level, from phonetics through phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. There are at least two kinds of impairment (perhaps not fully distinct): thought disorder, or failure to maintain a discourse plan, and schizophasia, comprising various dysphasia-like impairments such as clanging, neologism, and unintelligible utterances. Thought disorder appears to be p

On markers of linguistic impairment in autism and their implementation.

Language abilities in autism show considerable variability across linguistic domains: vocabulary, grammar/structural language, and pragmatics (language in context) may be affected to differing degrees and not always simultaneously, as is the case in other neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs), e.g. Down syndrome, Williams syndrome, or Developmental Language Disorder. This selective review synthesises empirical markers of language impairment across linguistic domains in autism, sometimes in comparison to other NDCs, while also evaluating theoretically driven assessment tools, both established an

Non-linguistic auditory speech processing.

OBJECTIVES: A method for testing auditory processing of non-linguistic speech-like stimuli was developed and evaluated. DESIGN: Monosyllabic words were temporally reversed and distorted. Stimuli were matched for spectrum and level. Listeners discriminated between distorted and undistorted stimuli. STUDY SAMPLE: Three groups were tested. The Normal group was comprised of 12 normal-hearing participants. The Senior group was comprised of 12 seniors. The Hearing Loss group was comprised of 12 participants with thresholds of at least 35 dB HL at one or more frequencies. RESULTS: The Senior group

Linguistic profiles of dyslexic and good readers.

Linguistic profiles of 60 boys with average intelligence were examined at kindergarten, grade 2, and grade 4. The subjects were 7 dyslexic, 7 mildly dyslexic, 30 average, and 16 good readers, defined in terms of the discrepancy between standardized reading and intelligence scores. Across the three ages, reader groups did not differ in language comprehension, but did differ in confrontation and rapid automatized naming (RAN), three syntactic measures, and verbal memory. Group strengths and weaknesses were, with few exceptions apparent in kindergarten and maintained throughout. The kindergarten

Digital inverse filtering for linguistic research.

To enable differences in modes of glottal vibration to be studied, glottal air volume velocity waveforms can be recovered from speech recordings by inverse filtering. Most previous published work in this area has made use of analog filters. Digital inverse filters offer many advantages, including the ability to change filter settings to match changing vocal tract filter functions. Although the theory and many of the methods necessary for digital inverse filtering have been described in the literature, a straightforward description of the entire process has been lacking. The digital inverse fil

Effectiveness of rhythmic training on linguistics skill development in deaf children and adolescents with cochlear implants: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This review compiles the scientific evidence to date on the effectiveness of musical/rhythmic training for improving and/or enhancing the development of language skills in deaf children aged 6-16 years with cochlear implants. METHODS: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were used for the research following the PRISMA protocol. RESULTS: The reviewed studies indicate that rhythmic training can improve language skills (perception, production, and comprehension) in this population, as well as in other cognitive skills. CONCLUSION: Although further research is still needed, the

False but phonologically plausible linguistic priors induce cross-linguistic auditory illusions and attenuate electrophysiological markers of surprise.

According to predictive coding theory, perception arises from the interplay between top-down expectations and bottom-up sensory input. In the auditory domain, this interplay can lead to illusory experiences-for instance, when phonetic similarities between languages cause listeners to mishear foreign lyrics as familiar words in their native language. This study investigated how linguistic priors influence auditory perception during song listening. Participants read sentences in English or Italian before hearing English song excerpts, then rated how well the lyrics matched the text. Crucially, s

Binocular coordination of children with dyslexia and typically developing children in linguistic and non-linguistic tasks: evidence from eye movements.

Given the increased evidence suggesting the presence of binocular coordination deficits in dyslexia, investigations of binocular eye movements are beneficial to clarify the underlying causes of reading difficulties. This systematic review aims to (a) synthesize the literature through the examination of binocular coordination in children with dyslexia by describing the normative development of stable binocular control and (b) outline future directions. Boolean expressions in the PubMed search were used to define papers. Following a literature search and selection process, 25 papers were include

Effect of Network Structure on the Spread of Linguistic Behavior.

Theoretical and computational models predict that social-network topology shapes the diffusion of linguistic forms, yet direct experimental evidence remains limited. Across three laboratory experiments, we tested whether network structure or seed placement influences the spread of target lexical items, while holding task demands constant. Experiment 1 compared clustered (high-transitivity) and random (low-transitivity) 12-node networks (N = 120). Experiment 2 extended this design to larger 24-node networks (N = 240). Experiment 3 provided an exploratory follow-up on seed placement within clust
