Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is a critical transboundary pathogen that causes devastating infections in cattle, buffalo, and other ruminants. The virus induces characteristic clinical manifestations, including cutaneous nodules, marked reduction in milk yield, and impaired production performance, leading to severe economic losses in the global livestock sector. Although LSDV exhibits remarkable multi-tissue tropism and persistent viral shedding in various organs, posing significant challenges for disease control, the molecular mechanisms underlying its tissue-specific adaptation remain poor

This study documented critical field epidemiological parameters of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and farmer-adopted mitigation strategies, utilizing primary data collected from 2,351 cattle farms across seven states in India. Reported clinical LSD incidence was 76–94% in the surveyed villages and 30–57% in the surveyed farms across the study states. LSD incidence was observed round the year but the peak incidence period varied across the states. The pooled reported clinical incidence and farmer-reported mortality levels across the study states was 23.4% and 4.0% and 22.3% and 5.5%, in crossbred and

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a disease of cattle and other ruminants caused by the LSD Virus (LSDV). LSD infections are characterized by high morbidity, low mortality, and significant economic impact. Initially endemic to Africa only, LSD has spread to the Middle East, Europe, and Asia in the past decade. In 2023, LSD posed a significant threat to Bhutan's livestock population, with outbreaks reported across 20 Dzongkhags (districts) and 192 Gewogs (groups of villages). This study investigated the epidemiology and molecular aspects of the outbreak. A total of 19,907 animals (16,728 cattle and 3

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Lumpy skin disease (LSD), caused by the LSD virus (LSDV), results in severe economic losses, reduced productivity, and restricted livestock trade. Although live attenuated vaccines are available, they pose risks such as viral shedding, recombination, and reversion to virulence. Inactivated vaccines, being safer alternatives, are particularly suitable for disease-free regions. This study aimed to develop an inactivated oil-adjuvanted vaccine using a local LSDV isolate and evaluate its immunogenicity and protective efficacy in rabbits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scab samples wer

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is an emerging livestock capripoxvirus (CaPV) that continues to cause substantial economic losses across Africa, Asia and Europe. However, important uncertainties remain regarding LSDV genome structure, particularly at the telomeric inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that are central to host interaction, replication and adaptive evolution. Structural variation at the ITRs is driven by recombination during virus replication. Previous assemblies have relied primarily on short-read sequencing, which provides limited resolution of repeat-rich telomeric regions and pro

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), historically restricted to Africa, has in recent years exhibited a marked expansion into several Asian and European countries, resulting in substantial economic impacts on the global cattle industry. In August 2019, the first confirmed outbreak of LSD was documented in the Xinjiang region of China. In response to this emerging threat, our study established primary, basic, and working seed banks utilizing the LSDV/MZGD/2020 strain, which was isolated from Meizhou, Guangdong. These seed banks underwent rigorous validation via sterility assays and evaluation of prolifera

Development of an effective vaccine against Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV) is crucial for protecting livestock. The current study outlines a web-based platform developed to aid the scientific community in designing effective peptide-based vaccines against LSDV. First, we generated all possible overlapping (K-mer value 9 and 15) peptides from the proteins of 73 LSDV strains. Second, after removing redundancy, the obtained peptides were utilized for predicting B-cell and T-cell epitopes. Third, the predicted B-cell and T-cell epitopes were screened for immunogenicity, allergenicity, and toxicit

The pathology caused by three different isolates of lumpy skin disease virus, classical field cluster 1.2 strain Dagestan/2015, recombinant vaccine-like cluster 2.1 strain Saratov/2017, and cluster 2.2 strain Udmurtiya/2019, in cattle was compared from experimental infections. The infection of cattle was performed using intravenous administration of 2 mL of 105 TCID50/mL of each specific LSDV. Both classical and recombinant forms of LSDV cause pathological changes in the skin and lymph nodes, as well as the trachea and lungs. Due to circulatory disorders in the affected organs, multiple areas

In this comparative study, we examine the safety of the sheeppox (SPP) and goatpox (GTP) vaccines and the protective response of these vaccines in cattle against a virulent lumpy skin disease (LSD) field strain. The vaccine safety was tested in rabbits, mice and cattle using ten times recommended dose. In the safety trial, none of the vaccinated animals showed any deviation from physiological norms or fever, inappetence or local/ generalized skin reactions. In the challenge trial, both SPP and GTP vaccine groups developed virus-neutralizing antibodies with an average titre of 2.1 log2 at 21 da

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a viral disease of cattle and buffalo, caused by a Capripox virus. A field study was performed during an LSD epidemic which occurred in 2012-2013 in Israel, in order to assess the efficacy of two commercial vaccines for protection against LSD. Fifteen dairy herds, vaccinated 2-5 months prior to study onset with a single dose of 10(2.5) TCID50 of RM65 attenuated sheep-pox vaccine, and not affected previously, were enrolled in the study. 4694 cows were randomized to be either vaccinated with a 10(3.5) TCID50/dose of RM65 vaccine (x10RM65) or with a same dose of an att

Lumpy skin disease (LSD), caused by Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV, genus Capripoxvirus), is an emerging transboundary disease of cattle and water buffalo. Although rarely fatal, it results in severe economic losses due to decreased productivity, hide damage, infertility, and trade limitations. This review summarizes the etiology, susceptible hosts, modes of transmission, and advances in control, vaccination, and treatment strategies, with a particular focus on Europe, where spread into previously unaffected areas has recently been reported. Since its first identification in Zambia in 1929, LS

Lumpy skin disease (LSD), caused by Capripoxvirus, poses significant threats to global livestock due to its high contagion and economic impact. Current diagnostic methods are limited by their dependence on laboratories, while vaccine efficacy monitoring relies on cumbersome virus neutralization tests (VNTs). To address these challenges, a laser-induced graphene (LIG)-based electrochemical immunoassay has been developed for the sensitive detection of LSD and the validation of vaccination. The platform employs recombinant F13L antigen and IgM antibody, configured for dual applications: F13L quan

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an important transboundary disease of cattle that compromises animal welfare and causes major production and economic losses. Early on-farm recognition is challenging, particularly when lesions are small, low contrast, or obscured by complex coat patterns. Meanwhile, the growing use of on-farm cameras and smartphones creates opportunities for image-based tools to support herd-level screening and earlier veterinary intervention. Here, we develop a morphology‑driven image analysis model for lumpy skin disease detection in cattle (LSDD). The framework is designed to re

BACKGROUND: Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an emerging viral disease of cattle in Bangladesh, first reported in 2019. Given the critical role of veterinarians in disease detection, management, and control, it is essential to evaluate their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding the clinical and epidemiological aspects of LSD and its treatment strategies.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among early-career veterinarians using a cluster random sampling technique to assess epidemiological insights and clinical practices regarding the LSD outbreak in the field.
RESULTS:

Lumpy skin disease (LSD), caused by the LSD virus (LSDV) from the Capripoxvirus genus, affects cattle, water buffalo, and wild bovines, leading to significant economic losses. Characterised by fever, skin nodules, and mucosal lesions, LSD raises global concerns due to vector-borne transmission. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) classifies LSD as a notifiable disease, emphasising the need for rapid diagnostic methods for timely disease confirmation and control. This study evaluates the performance of two previously developed ELISA tests - competitive and indirect. The validation i

In this study, miRNA profiling of cells infected with lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) was conducted for the first time. When compared to mock-infected cells, LSDV-infected primary lamb testicle (LT) cells showed dysregulation of 64, 85, and 85 miRNAs at 12 hours postinfection (hpi), 48 hpi, and 72 hpi, respectively. While some of these miRNAs were found to be dysregulated at a particular time point following LSDV infection, others were dysregulated at all three time points. Analysis of the differentially expressed miRNA-mRNA interaction networks, Gene Ontology analysis of the predicted targets
