Efficacy of indigenous bacterial antagonists from the anthosphere of Macadamia integrifolia in controlling Cladosporium raceme blight.

Floral diseases of macadamia, such as raceme blight, are among the main limiting factors for crop production, and the low availability of registered products for phytosanitary management further aggravates this challenge. In this context, biocontrol agents emerge as a sustainable and effective alternative for integrated disease management. This study aimed to select antagonistic bacteria for the control of raceme blight in macadamia, caused by Cladosporium xanthochromaticum. For this purpose, bacteria were isolated from macadamia racemes, identified, and tested against the phytopathogen in bot

Macadamia Nut-Induced Anaphylactic Shock Requiring Repeated Intramuscular Adrenaline Administration in a Three-Year-Old Girl.

Cases of macadamia nut-induced anaphylactic shock have been rarely reported. We report the case of a three-year-old girl with anaphylactic shock who presented with generalized erythema two hours after ingesting macadamia nuts. She required two doses of intramuscular adrenaline for the treatment of anaphylactic shock. The diagnosis of macadamia nut allergy was confirmed by a prick-by-prick skin test using roasted and raw macadamia nut paste extracts and elevated serum macadamia nut-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. Appropriately using a prick-by-prick test may contribute to accurately dia

Efficient In Planta Induction of Transgenic Hairy Roots in Macadamia Seedlings and Mature Trees Using Visual Reporters.

Macadamia (Macadamia spp.) is an economically important nut crop whose severe recalcitrance to genetic transformation substantially hinders progress in functional genomics and molecular breeding. To overcome this critical technical bottleneck, this study established a highly efficient and broadly applicable in planta hairy root genetic transformation system with integrated visual screening. This system utilizes an Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation method, employing multiple visual reporter gene systems (DsRed2, eGFP, RUBY, and AtPAP2) to achieve antibiotic-independent and non-de

Green and sustainable use of macadamia nuts as support material in Pt-based direct methanol fuel cells.

The successful commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is hindered by inadequate methanol oxidation activity and anode catalyst longevity. Efficient and cost-effective electrode materials are imperative in the widespread use of DMFCs. While Platinum (Pt) remains the primary component of anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) electrocatalysts, its utilization alone in DMFC systems is limited due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, instability, methanol crossover, and high cost. These limitations impede the economic feasibility of Pt as an electrocatalyst. Herein, we present the

Macadamia oil alleviates brain injury induced by potassium dichromate via modulation of galectin-3/caspase-3 and Sitruin1.

The protein galectin-3 is essential for cell migration, activation, and proliferation. It also functions as an inflammatory mediator and triggers caspase-3, which causes brain damage. The purpose of this study was to unveil the phytochemical richness of macadamia nut oil (MO) and assess its potential as a treatment for brain damage caused by potassium dichromate (PDC), as well as its impact on galectin-3/caspase-3 and Sitruin1. The active ingredients of MO were determined by thorough analyses using GC-MS, HPLC, and spectrophotometry. These included oleic acid (47.53%), palmitoleic acid (16.48%

Rice bran wax-structured macadamia oleogels and temperature-responsive water-in-oil emulsions: Fabrication, characterization and astaxanthin delivery.

Oil structuring has been considered as a promising design for fat replacement due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids and solid fat-like texture. In this study, rice bran wax (RBW) was used as an oleogelator to construct astaxanthin-loaded macadamia oleogel system, and the crystal morphology, intermolecular force and rheological behavior of the oleogels were evaluated. The results showed that RBW formed a stable oleogel at low concentration (5.0 wt%), which was attributed to the formation of a network of RBW crystals held together by van der Waals interactions. Moreover, the oleogel

Identification and Functional Analysis of WOX Genes in Macadamia spp. Reveal WOX1 and WOX4 Homologs Involved in Shoot Regeneration.

Macadamia spp., high-value forest crops, face considerable challenges in increasing yields due to inefficient clonal propagation of superior varieties, which severely limits industrial development. This study focused on the WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) family, which includes key regulators of plant regeneration. We systematically identified the members of the WOX family in four cultivated varieties of the "smooth-shelled" type and in one species of the "rough-shelled" type. We demonstrated the presence of 19 WOX family members in M. integrifolia "GR1." Expression analysis revealed that the W

Interactions mechanisms decoding of macadamia protein isolate-procyanidins dimer complexes and synergistic effect for high internal phase Pickering emulsions stabilization.

Macadamia protein isolate (MPI) is a promising plant-based protein but its poor emulsifying functionality limits broader applications. This study investigated the interaction mechanisms between MPI and procyanidin dimer (PA2) and their synergistic effect on the stabilization of high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs). Spectroscopic and physicochemical analyses demonstrated that MPI and PA2 formed complexes through a spontaneous binding process mainly driven by hydrogen bonding, accompanied by hydrophobic interactions. These interactions induced notable conformational changes in MPI, l

Queensland nut tree (Macadamia integrifolia) activated carbon-based material for methylene blue dye removal: experimental design optimization with desirability function.

The discharge of dye-containing wastewater, particularly methylene blue (MB) dye, poses significant environmental and health concerns due to its toxicity and persistence in aquatic systems. Herein, Queensland nut tree (Macadamia integrifolia) biomass waste was converted into mesoporous activated carbon (MAC-AC) for MB dye removal from aqueous environment. The MAC-AC was produced by using microwave-assisted H3PO4 activation at operating power (600 W) and residence time (15 min). Several characterization methods such as BET, XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX, and pHpzc were applied to investigate the physicoch

Integrating olfactory and visual cues for trap-based monitoring of the tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus (F.) (Coleoptera: Scolytinae), a key pest of macadamia in Hawaii.

The tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus (F.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is a significant economic pest in Hawaii's macadamia orchards, contributing to substantial pre- and postharvest losses. Existing management strategies relying on cultural controls and generalist predators have been proven inefficient. This study developed and evaluated a trap-based monitoring system integrating both olfactory and visual cues to improve pest monitoring and management for H. obscurus. Field trials conducted over 2 yr assessed various alcohol-based lure formulations and trap color preferen

Seed-breaking forces exerted by orang-utans with their teeth in captivity and a new technique for estimating forces produced in the wild.

Orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus) at the Singapore Zoological Gardens were presented with two thick-shelled edible seeds, Mezzettia parviflora (Annonaceae) and Macadamia ternifolia (Proteaceae) in order to estimate their maximum bite forces. The orang-utans could break the Macadamia seeds in one bite, while those of Mezzettia required repeated attempts. Examination of shell fragments showed that many had scratches and some had clear, but small (ca. 1-2 mm diameter), impressions on them. Building upon this information, semi-imitative tests were performed on the seeds in a universal testing machine b
