A comparison between intermittent and constant wheelchair propulsion strategies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different synchronous push strategies on physiological parameters and temporal timing characteristics. Eight novice male able-bodied participants completed four counter-balanced conditions: two push strategies (constant pushing) and intermittent pushing (INT) at two push frequencies (40 and 70 pushes/min) at 27 W. The ANOVA main effects for frequency indicated that regardless of push strategy, oxygen cost and mechanical efficiency increased with an increase in push frequency (p < 0.01). The INT40 strategy resulted in the lowest heart r

[Research on Exoskeleton Human-Machine Interaction for Walking Assistance in Myasthenia].

To address the insufficient human-machine interaction adaptability in current lower-limb rehabilitation exoskeletons, this study proposes a lower-limb assistive exoskeleton featuring active actuation at the hip and knee joints and passive following at the ankle joint. A rigid self-adaptive human-machine interface is adopted to provide both effective assistive torque and structural compliance, aiming to deliver gait assistance for individuals with muscle weakness while improving wearing comfort. First, a bionic geometric structure of the exoskeleton was constructed based on human lower-limb bio

Recent Advances in Supplementary Haptic Feedback for Human-Machine Interfaces in Upper Limb Assistance and Rehabilitation.

Despite the rapid technological advancements we witnessed in the last few decades, effective regaining or substituting the impaired sensorimotor function of the upper limb is still a dream for many patients and researchers worldwide. While technology-aided motor therapy and advanced human-machine interfaces have significantly evolved, the efforts to integrate supplementary sensory feedback (SSF) to promote sensorimotor restoration after neurological or orthopedic damage became relevant only in recent years. In this review, we examine emerging strategies for encoding and delivering somatosensor

Electrooculography-based continuous eye-writing recognition system for efficient assistive communication systems.

Human-computer interface systems whose input is based on eye movements can serve as a means of communication for patients with locked-in syndrome. Eye-writing is one such system; users can input characters by moving their eyes to follow the lines of the strokes corresponding to characters. Although this input method makes it easy for patients to get started because of their familiarity with handwriting, existing eye-writing systems suffer from slow input rates because they require a pause between input characters to simplify the automatic recognition process. In this paper, we propose a contin

Using a Sequence of Earcons to Monitor Multiple Simulated Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether a sequence of earcons can effectively convey the status of multiple processes, such as the status of multiple patients in a clinical setting. BACKGROUND: Clinicians often monitor multiple patients. An auditory display that intermittently conveys the status of multiple patients may help. METHOD: Nonclinician participants listened to sequences of 500-ms earcons that each represented the heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels of a different simulated patient. In each sequence, one, two, or three patients had an abnormal leve

Upper limb functional electrical stimulation devices and their man-machine interfaces.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a technique that uses electricity to activate the nerves of a muscle that is paralysed due to hemiplegia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease or spinal cord injury (SCI). FES has been widely used to restore upper limb functions in people with hemiplegia and C5-C7 tetraplegia and has improved their ability to perform their activities of daily living (ADL). At the time of writing, a detailed literature review of the existing upper limb FES devices and their man-machine interfaces (MMI) showed that only the NESS H200 was commercially available. Howev

Dynamic velocity scaling for industrial collaborative robots: a gaze-driven approach.

Implementing an effective human-robot seamless interaction (HRSI) is a critical challenge for the industrial robotics community, which requires capturing all human mental processes and turn them into suitable robot's actions. This work presents a method to adjust the robot behavior in real-time considering both human's low-frequency, i.e. cognitive workload, and high-frequency cognitive processes, i.e. visual attention, which are generally overlooked in literature, to optimize safety, productivity and ergonomics. Regarding high-frequency processes, the system monitors the operator's gaze - the

Microstructure-engineered flexible tactile sensors for bioelectronics and human-machine interactions: a review.

Flexible tactile sensors, distinguished by their mechanical compliance and skin-like characteristics, have emerged as highly promising platforms for applications in bioelectronics and human-machine interactions. However, their sensing performance remains substantially constrained by intrinsic material limitations, while the persistent trade-off between sensitivity and detection range continues to hinder their practical utility in complex application scenarios. This review systematically summarizes the principal sensing mechanisms of flexible tactile sensors, including capacitive, piezoresistiv

An intelligent hybrid-fabric wristband system enabled by thermal encapsulation for ergonomic human-machine interaction.

Human-machine interaction has emerged as a revolutionary and transformative technology, bridging the gap between human and machine. Gesture recognition, capitalizing on the inherent dexterity of human hands, plays a crucial role in human-machine interaction. However, existing systems often struggle to meet user expectations in terms of comfort, wearability, and seamless daily integration. Here, we propose a handwriting recognition technology utilizing an intelligent hybrid-fabric wristband system. This system integrates spun-film sensors into textiles to form the smart fabric, enabling intelli

Social stress and performance in human-machine interaction: a neglected research field.

Given the increasing capabilities of highly automated systems, the article argues for a need to address the issue of social stress in human-machine interaction. It suggests a classification system of subordinate concepts found in the research literature under the heading of social stress. A review of the literature revealed a paucity of studies examining the effects of social stressors on performance. In particular, the review showed a shortage of experimental lab-based work, needed to establish clear cause-effect relationships. The article examined the suitability of different social stressor

[Functional dynamics of the pilots of heavy transport helicopters in the course of a flight shift].

Before and after flights about 300 crewmembers of heavy transport helicopters were examined, using psychophysiological and integral methods that yield professionally important information. During a flight shift the health state of helicopter pilots varies via three stages: habituation, initial decline and distinct lassitude, with the latter developing after 5 h flight load. In order to increase human reliability in the pilot-helicopter system, it is advisable to allow 4 h flight time during a flight shift onboard helicopters of the above type. In this case the pilot exposure to vibration effec

Visual and somatic sensory feedback of brain activity for intuitive surgical robot manipulation.

This paper presents a method to evaluate the hand-eye coordination of the master-slave surgical robot by measuring the activation of the intraparietal sulcus in users brain activity during controlling virtual manipulation. The objective is to examine the changes in activity of the intraparietal sulcus when the user's visual or somatic feedback is passed through or intercepted. The hypothesis is that the intraparietal sulcus activates significantly when both the visual and somatic sense pass feedback, but deactivates when either visual or somatic is intercepted. The brain activity of three subj

System characterization of RiceWrist-S: a forearm-wrist exoskeleton for upper extremity rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation of the distal joints of the upper extremities is crucial to restore the ability to perform activities of daily living to patients with neurological lesions resulting from stroke or spinal cord injury. Robotic rehabilitation has been identified as a promising new solution, however, much of the existing technology in this field is focused on the more proximal joints of the upper arm. A recently presented device, the RiceWrist-S, focuses on the rehabilitation of the forearm and wrist, and has undergone a few important design changes. This paper first addresses the design improvemen

Comparison of required operating forces between floor-based and overhead-mounted patient lifting devices.

This study investigated the differences in required push, pull and rotating forces for moving fully loaded, floor-based and overhead-mounted full body patient lifting devices with simulated patients of varying weight on a floor of optimal design (i.e. level vinyl tile over concrete). A single person operated the lifting devices for all of the tests. Eighteen male and female volunteer participants, ranging in weight from 51 to 146 kg, acted as patients during the lifting tests. For each test, the simulated patients were pushed and pulled for 3.7 linear metres and were rotated while sitting in t

Toward developing an approach for alerting drivers to the direction of a crash threat.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the potential for auditory and haptic spatial cuing approaches to alert drivers to the direction of a crash threat. BACKGROUND: For an automobile equipped with multiple crash avoidance systems, effective cuing of the crash threat direction may help the driver avoid the crash. Because the driver may not be looking in the direction of a visual crash alert, nonvisual crash alerts were explored as an additional means of directing attention to a potential crash situation. METHODS: In this in-traffic study, 32 drivers were asked to verbally report alert direction in

A Multimodal Agentic AI Framework for Intuitive Human-Robot Collaboration.

Widespread acceptance of collaborative robots in human-involved scenarios requires accessible and intuitive interfaces for lay workers and non-expert users. Existing interfaces often rely on users to plan and issue low-level commands, necessitating extensive knowledge of robot control. This study proposes a multimodal agentic AI framework integrating natural user interfaces (NUIs) to foster effortless human-like partnerships in human-robot collaboration (HRC), which enhance intuitiveness and operational efficiency. First, it allows users to instruct robots using plain language verbally, couple

A Large-Area Broadband Multimodal Dual-Resonant Haptic Device for Bidirectional Telerobotic and Augmented Interactions.

Bidirectional haptic systems demand interfaces that combine sensing and actuation, enabling concurrent detection of tactile inputs and delivery of perceptually rich feedback across a broad frequency spectrum. However, most existing haptic technologies remain limited to simple tactile sensing or narrowband feedback, struggling to resolve continuous motions and simultaneous sensory cues required for naturalistic human-machine interaction (HMI). These limitations fundamentally constrain the fidelity and expressiveness of tactile communication, preventing current human-machine interfaces from repr

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Inter-Session Re-Calibration of Ultrasound-Based HMIs.

Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) have gained popularity as they allow for an effortless and natural interaction between the user and the machine by processing information gathered from a single or multiple sensing modalities and transcribing user intentions to the desired actions. Their operability depends on frequent periodic re-calibration using newly acquired data due to their adaptation needs in dynamic environments, where test-time data continuously change in unforeseen ways, a cause that significantly contributes to their abandonment and remains unexplored by the Ultrasound-based (US-base
