Salivary gland neoplasms in non-human primates: A case series and brief literature review.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland neoplasms are rare in non-human primates. METHODS: Thirty-five years of pathology records were reviewed at the Southwest (SNPRC) and Yerkes (YNPRC) National Primate Research Centers. An in-depth literature search for salivary gland neoplasms in non-human primates was performed. RESULTS: Seventeen salivary gland neoplasms (nine from SNPRC and YNPRC, eight from published literature) were identified. There were seven malignant, nine benign, and one of undetermined behavior identified in eight rhesus macaques, six baboons, a chimpanzee, a bonnet macaque, and a moustach

Imaging of Jaw Lesions.

Mandibular and maxillary lesions are common imaging findings, which pose a unique diagnostic challenge as dental pathology overlaps that of the remainder of the oral cavity. This review will guide radiologists in the interpretation of benign and malignant odontogenic and non odontogenic neoplasms.

Navigation-assisted transoral endoscopic surgery for mandibular ramus-condyle tumours.

Neoplasms of the mandibular ascending ramus and condyle cause facial asymmetry, trismus, malocclusion, swelling in the temporomandibular joint area, and pain. Conventional surgeries require an external incision, with a risk of facial nerve injury and leaving a scar. This study aimed to establish a minimally invasive approach for mandibular ramus-condyle tumour resection, using intraoperative navigation and endoscopes. The safety and feasibility were assessed by cadaveric dissection. Nine patients with osteomas or osteochondromas occurring from the mandibular ascending ramus and condyle were in

[Evaluation of the usefulness of autogenic bone grafts in reconstruction of the mandible].

The treatment of reconstructions of mandible by means of autogenic bone graft in 64 patients has been presented (Fig. 1). In 55 cases the bone material was taken from the iliac crest, in 5--the skin-muscle flap, in 4--the free bone graft from VIII rib and tibial bones. The resection in 47 patients was performed because of malignant neoplasms, in 4 cases--oral and mandibular benign neoplasms, in 3 cases a part of the mandible was resected because of the osteodystrophy, in 3 cases due to osteoradionecrosis, in 3 cases--congenital anomalies, in 2 cases because of a cyst, while in other 2--after a

[Actinomycosis of the tonsils with a pseudotumoral presentation: a clinical case].

A case of actinomycosis of the tonsils with a neoplasm-like clinical presentation is presented. Tonsillectomy confirmed the diagnosis and the patient's evolution was favorable after postoperative antibiotic therapy. The scant literature on cervicofacial actinomycosis is reviewed. These processes often are confused with neoplasms, as in our case, or with mandibular osteomyelitis. Treatment is surgery and prolonged antibiotic administration. Actinomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses, particularly when the biopsy is negative for carcinoma.

A Rare and Extensive Case of Oral Malignant Melanoma involving Mandibular Gingiva.

Oral malignant melanoma is an infrequent but an aggressive neoplasm of unknown etiology, seen most commonly in middle age male patients and is more frequently seen at the hard palate and gingiva. The tumor tends to metastasize or locally invade tissue more readily than other malignant tumors in the oral region. In this article, we report a rare case of extensive oral melanoma in a 55-year-old male patient, with a chief complaint of painless growth in mandibular anterior gingiva measuring about 2.6 X 1.7 X 0.8 cm and extending bilaterally till posterior mandibular gingiva and unilaterally to ri

Current status of transport-disc-distraction osteogenesis for mandibular reconstruction.

Surgical intervention including composite mandibulectomy is the mainstay of treatment for extrication of disease in patients with neoplasms involving the mandible. The associated morbidities and reduction in quality of life after reconstruction of the mandibular defect are dependent on the quality of the reconstruction. Therefore, alternative treatments, such as distraction osteogenesis, could be a viable option to improve patient outcome. The goal of this technology is to restore bony continuity through the use of in-situ bone in an attempt to create an anatomically correct regenerate that is

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the mandibular salivary gland in a dog.

A 14-year-old spayed female shepherd/collie crossbred dog had a 6 x 4-cm mass excised from below the right ear. The partially encapsulated, neoplastic mass had a necrotic core and was embedded in the mandibular salivary gland. Histologically, the mass was composed of numerous multinucleate giant cells and large, oval, pleomorphic cells that produced osteoid. Neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for vimentin and actin but not for keratin, desmin, or S-100 protein. At postmortem examination 1 month later, an 11-cm spherical mass had recurred at the surgical site, and there were metastatic nodule

Infantile fibrous dysplasia of the mandible.

Fibrous dysplasia of the craniofacial skeleton is an uncommon benign neoplasm. Its appearance in infancy (<1 year) is extremely rare. The authors report a case of mandibular fibrous dysplasia presenting in a patient 12 weeks of age as a painless, primarily left-sided, enlarging neoplasm of bone. Surgical contouring was successfully performed when the patient was 9 months of age. The authors anticipate recurrence, but at 6 months of follow-up no new growth has been observed.

Prosthodontic rehabilitation of patient with marginal mandibular resection using attachment supported prostheses: A clinical report.

Marginal mandibular resection to treat neoplasms leads to loss of alveolar bone and teeth at the affected side. Consequently patient suffers with poor masticatory performance and esthetic disfigurement, which we need to restore with the help of prosthodontic rehabilitation. The success of rehabilitation of these patients depends on strategic treatment planning and choice of most suitable treatment modality. In this article, case of a patient has been presented who underwent marginal mandibular resection and reported with many limiting factors like obliterated buccal and lingual sulci, attachme

An exceptionally rare case of renal metastasis from mandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm characterized by slow growth, frequent perineural invasion, and a propensity for late distant metastasis, while renal involvement remains exceptionally uncommon. We report the case of a 48-year-old woman who presented renal lesion was diagnosed approximately three years after the initial treatment of the mandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma. The patient underwent right radical nephrectomy, and histopathological examination with immunohistochemical analysis confirmed secondary renal involvement by metastatic mandibular adenoid cystic carcinom

Erupted compound odontome.

Odontomas are considered to be hamartomas rather than a true neoplasm. They consist chiefly of enamel and dentin, with variable amount of pulp and cementum when fully developed. They are generally asymptomatic and are included under the benign calcified odontogenic tumors. They are usually discovered on routine radiographic examination. Eruption of an odontoma in the oral cavity is rare. Peripheral compound odontomas arise extraosseously and have a tendency to exfoliate. In this article we are reporting a case of a 15-year-old girl with peripheral compound odontoma, with a single rudimentary t

Segmental Mandibulectomy in the Dog.

This step-by-step manuscript describes surgical technique of segmental mandibulectomy in the dog. This surgical procedure may be indicated for the excision of small- to mid-sized neoplasms or as a salvage procedure for mandibular fractures. Long-term postoperative complications are not common and cosmetic appearance following the procedure is generally acceptable to the pet owner.

Secondary reconstruction for mandibular osteoradionecrosis defect with fibula osteomyocutaneous flap flowthrough from radial forearm flap using stereolithographic 3-dimensional printing modeling technology.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most serious complications of oral and nasopharyngeal malignant neoplasms after radiotherapy. The incidence of mandibular ORN is significantly higher than that of maxilla. A radical surgical intervention such as mandibulectomy for advanced ORN is appropriate and effective to relieve pain and control infection. However, recovery of functionality and aesthetics is usually not the primary purpose of the one-stage radical surgery. Some patients often need a 2-stage operation owing to the bone defect, scar contracture, or recurrence. Although free flap has bee

Mandibular Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors: A Literature Review with a New Case Presentation.

Aim: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with few reported mandibular cases. This review aims to describe the clinical characteristics, surgical management and outcomes of 13 mandibular IMT cases, and to introduce the Jaw in a Day (JIAD) approach as a novel surgical option. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched systematically. From an initial pool of 261 articles, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Results: Thirteen mandibular IMT cases were identified in the literature. A new case is also presented: a 15-year-old fem

Solitary Plasmacytoma of the Mandible: A Rare Presentation.

Solitary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm, most often arising in vertebrae and long bones; among these, mandibular involvement is exceptional. The following report documents a rare mandibular presentation in a 48‑year‑old female patient who presented with pain and swelling in the right lower jaw. Clinical examination, radiographic findings, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. The lesion was managed surgically with hemi‑mandibulectomy and reconstruction, with no recurrence to date. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of maxillofacial plasmacytomas by dent

Malignant ameloblastoma: a challenging diagnosis.

Ameloblastoma is an uncommon and locally aggressive, benign, odontogenic tumor, with local recurrence when not adequately excised. A rare variant of this neoplasm with the benign features but accompanied with metastases has been described. This rare variant is malignant ameloblastoma and is known to have a poor prognosis. We present the case of a young woman who had recurrent mandibular tumors, which were resected twice and histologically reported as ameloblastoma. Four years later, she presented with pulmonary metastasis and atelectasis. A review of the literature on this very rare neoplasm w

Mandibular Fracture as First Sign of an Occult Intraosseous Hemangioma.

Intraosseous hemangioma (IH) in the maxillofacial area is a very uncommon neoplasm. Here, the authors show an exceptional case not previously reported in the literature of a 65-year-old man who presented with a pathological mandibular fracture following a facial trauma that was the first sign of an occult cavernous IH. Complete excision of the tumor in the mandibular ramus reduced the risk of severe bleeding and prevented long-term recurrence, whereas immobilization of the fracture obtained an excellent functional result. This clinical report highlights the possibility that a previously unknow

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the mandible.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a high-grade neoplasm that is usually located in the extremities and retroperitoneum. In the past, UPS was considered the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults; due to improvements in diagnostic techniques, most cases have been reclassified as other lineage-specific tumors. Gnathic bones are rarely affected, and the clinicopathological characteristics of this neoplasm when diagnosed in the jaw remain to be better described. In this report, we present a rare case of mandibular UPS affecting an 88-year-old female who demonstrated a painful swelli
