This retrospective study reviews the diseases associated with morbidity and mortality in 221 budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) from a captive population from 2013 to 2019. The study aimed to evaluate the health status of a flock of budgerigars typical of today's zoologic collections. Based on previous literature, it was hypothesized that age-related conditions such as neoplasia would be common, whereas metabolic and nutritional disorders would be less common. Neoplasia was widespread among the population, affecting 34% of birds (75/221). Carcinomas made up most neoplastic processes and mos

Two budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were presented for coelomic distension. Contrast barium gastrointestinal radiographic examination showed that both birds had abdominal wall hernias containing intestinal loops. Tenesmus was observed in both patients, and hernia repair surgery was performed. In case 1, an X-shaped incision was made in the skin covering the patient's hernia. This was followed by a transverse incision of the hernial sac and removal of the oviduct, as the hernial contents exceeded the capacity of the intestinal peritoneal cavity. The intestine was reduced into the peritone

The syrinx is the main source for phonation in birds, its function is analogous to the mammalian larynx. Birds have both a larynx and a syrinx, but they use only the latter to vocalize. The objective of this work to give a detailed description of the anatomical, histological, and ultrastructural of syrinx in male budgerigars as a model of a passerine bird. The syrinx in the current study was to be found as a tracheobronchial type, it consists of cranial (tympanum) part and caudal (bronchosyringeal) part and, additionally, there are lateral vibrating membranes. The tympanum is formed of the las

Permanent loss of auditory nerve (AN) fibers occurs with increasing age and sound overexposure, sometimes without hair cell damage or associated audiometric threshold elevation. Rodent studies suggest effects of AN damage on central processing and behavior, but these species have limited capacity to discriminate low-frequency speech-like sounds. Here, we introduce a new animal model of AN damage in an avian communication specialist, the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The budgerigar is a vocal learner and speech mimic with sensitive low-frequency hearing and human-like behavioral sensiti

PURPOSE: Loss of auditory nerve afferent synapses with cochlear hair cells, called cochlear synaptopathy, is a common pathology in humans caused by aging and noise overexposure. The perceptual consequences of synaptopathy in isolation from other cochlear pathologies are still unclear. Animal models provide an effective approach to resolve uncertainty regarding the physiological and perceptual consequences of auditory nerve loss, because neural lesions can be induced and readily quantified. The budgerigar, a parakeet species, has recently emerged as an animal model for synaptopathy studies base

The authors describe a solitary adenoma in a 5.5-year-old female Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The tumour was partially blocking the lumen of the proventriculus and filled it almost completely. Decreased passage of food towards the gizzard and the intestines developed in the bird as result of the obstruction, which periodically hindered the passage, leading to slow emaciation. An epithelial tumour composed of irregular glandular acini was diagnosed by histological examination. Immunohistochemical reaction with pancytokeratin showed a positive cytoplasmic reaction both in the neoplastic

This investigation was conducted on 30 adult, male and female budgerigars. The thyroid and parathyroid glands adhere to each other on both sides of the body and are surrounded by a common connective tissue capsule. The glandular "cluster" on the right side was cranial and dorsal in relation to that on the left. The thyroid glands were most often supplied with blood by the following glandular arteries: the caudal thyroid (1-4), the cranial thyroid (1-3) and the middle thyroid (1 or 2). The caudal thyroid generally branched from the oesophagotracheobronchial artery. On the right side the cranial

A 2-year-old male budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) died after a 1-day history of fracture of the rostral rhinotheca with pale mucous membranes, dyspnea, dull mentation, and ataxia. Histopathology revealed an infiltrative neoplasm composed of interweaving streams of spindle cells effacing the dermis and bone of the rostral upper beak as well as a ganglion and two cranial nerves. No visceral metastasis was observed. Neoplastic cells exhibited strong cytoplasmic immunolabeling for alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and lacked immunolabeling for S100, Melan-A, PNL2, and cytokeratin AE1/AE3. The

The locations of brainstem motor nuclei supplying efferents to organs of the vocal tract of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) were determined as a first step in describing brain pathways for vocal control in this species. We identified four major nerves supplying the muscles of the syrinx, larynx, and tongue, and separately treated each of these with horseradish peroxidase. Nerves supplying efferents to the larynx and tongue arise from ipsilateral cells in the nucleus ambiguus and hypoglossal nucleus, respectively. Each right and left half of the syrinx is supplied by both right and lef

The present study describes the pathological and bacteriological findings and diagnosis by immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence methods in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) naturally infected with Salmonella gallinarum obtained from three commercial budgerigar rearing farms. The course of the disease in young budgerigars was peracute or acute, whereas in adult budgerigars the disease was acute or chronic. Clinically, yellow-white diarrhoea was observed in the young budgerigars with the acute form. In the adult budgerigars with the acute and chronic forms, a decrease in feed and water co

The protozoan Dientamoeba fragilis is one of the most common parasites in the digestive system of humans worldwide. The host range and transmission routes of D. fragilis, including the role of animals, are still ambiguous with few reports from non-human primates, sheep, rodents, pigs, a cat and a dog. In this study, we used microscopic and TaqMan qPCR analyses to investigate D. fragilisin 150 faecal samples from pet budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. Dientamoeba fragilis DNA was detected in 32 samples, resulting in a mean prevalence of 21.3%. In mic

Macrorhabdus ornithogaster, avian gastric yeast, is a common cause of gastrointestinal disease in budgerigars ( Melopsittacus undulatus). To better understand the clinical disease in budgerigars presented in a practice population, we reviewed the occurrence, clinical signs, and treatment success of M ornithogaster disease in budgerigars during a 2.5-year period at the Clinic for Birds and Reptiles, University of Leipzig (Leipzig, Germany). The yeast was diagnosed by microscopic examination of fresh fecal samples. Male budgerigars of all ages were most affected. Most clinical signs in birds wit

Aspergillosis is a disease caused by species of fungi of the genus Aspergillus sp. and is important for wild birds. A female budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) presenting with dyspnea, apathy, anorexia, ruffled feathers, and drowsiness with abnormal tail movements, suggesting respiratory distress, was treated in the emergency room at the Center for Wildlife Medicine and Research. The animal died and the body was sent to the Ornithopathology Laboratory. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal areas of mixed inflammatory infiltrate associated with septate fungal hyphae, with dichotom

Limiting stress during interactions between captive animals and humans is important for effective husbandry. One physiological change during the vertebrate stress response is the release of glucocorticoid hormones. Here, we measured plasma corticosterone in female domesticated budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to test whether human presence, restraint, or removal and return of a newly stressed neighbor increases corticosterone. The presence of humans for 15 min at the beginning of the experiment did not significantly elevate corticosterone above baseline levels, suggesting that birds that

Currently the posterior approach undertaken to perform cervical hemilaminectomy and foraminotomy provides sufficient exposure to treat the majority of lateral soft-disc herniations or osteophytes causing radiculopathy. Limitations imposed by the surgical field, however, often necessitate excessive retraction of the nerve root and epidural venous plexus, which may potentially exacerbate a preexisting radiculopathy or increase intraoperative blood loss. Partial resection of the inferior pedicle augments exposure and enlarges the neural foramen, thus facilitating decompression while minimizing ma

Histoplasmosis is an endemic disease caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. This systemic disease can affect various organs beyond the lungs, such as the liver, spleen, adrenal gland, and lymph nodes. The clinical symptoms can range from asymptomatic to severe, life-threatening conditions, depending on the state of the patient's immune system. This report describes a 40-year-old male who presented with reports of weight loss, low back pain, and progressively worsening movement disorder of the bilateral lower extremities for months. Computed tomography (CT) examination showed multiple lytic lesions

Sensorineural hearing loss is a prevalent problem that adversely impacts quality of life by compromising interpersonal communication. While hair cell damage is readily detectable with the clinical audiogram, this traditional diagnostic tool appears inadequate to detect lost afferent connections between inner hair cells and auditory nerve (AN) fibers, known as cochlear synaptopathy. The envelope-following response (EFR) is a scalp-recorded response to amplitude modulation, a critical acoustic feature of speech. Because EFRs can have greater amplitude than wave I of the auditory brainstem respon

Chewing lice of the species Afrimenopon waar (Eichler) were collected from captive budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) in Pakistan. This is the first record of amblyceran lice from this host. It is also the first record of the genus Afrimenopon from Pakistani region. The primary host species of Afrimenopon waar is the rosy-faced lovebird Agapornis roseicollis (Vieillot). The finding of A. waar on budgerigars is, most likely, a result of a contamination in captivity. Morphological variation and origin of these lice are discussed.

A flock of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) was purchased from a licensed breeder and quarantined at a zoologic facility within the United States in 2016. Following 82 deaths within the flock, the remaining 66 birds were depopulated because of ongoing clinical salmonellosis despite treatment. Gross necropsy was performed on all 66 birds. Histopathologic examination was performed on 10 birds identified with gross lesions and 10 birds without. Pathologic findings were most often observed in the liver, kidney, and spleen. Lesions noted in the livers and spleens were consistent with published

This randomized, crossover study evaluated three sedation protocols administered subcutaneously in nine budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and nine black-cheeked lovebirds (Agapornis nigrigenis). All protocols included midazolam (5 mg/kg), combined with butorphanol (5 mg/kg) (BM), medetomidine (20 lg/kg) (MM), or alfaxalone (13 mg/kg) (AM). Mortalities from suspected cardiorespiratory arrest were observed when AM was used in lovebirds, even after reduction of alfaxalone dosage to 3 mg/kg, and therefore this protocol was excluded from further use in this species. Induction and recovery times
