Mentalization Based Treatment of an Adolescent Girl with Conduct Disorder This paper will give a short overview on the theoretical concept of mentalization and its specific characteristics in adolescence. A previous study on Mentalization based treatment for adolescents (MBT-A) demonstrated the effectiveness of MBT-A for the treatment of adolescents with symptoms of deliberate self-harm (Rossouw u. Fonagy, 2012). Based on the results of this study Taubner, Gablonski, Sevecke, and Volkert (in preparation) developed a manual for mentalization based treatment for adolescents with conduct disorder

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether therapists from orientations that do not explicitly target mentalizing-namely psychodynamic therapy (PDT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-use interventions consistent with Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), and how their use compares with MBT-oriented therapy.
METHODS: Seventy-five verbatim transcripts were randomly selected from audio-recorded psychotherapy sessions involving patients with personality disorders or subclinical personality difficulties. Therapist orientation was determined by self-identification (MBT = 25, CBT = 25, PDT = 25). S

OBJECTIVES: Although treatments of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) were historically associated with relatively high dropout rates, dropout rates in contemporary evidence-based treatments for BPD are typically substantially lower. However, only a few studies have investigated dropout rates in mentalization-based treatment (MBT), and even fewer have investigated predictors of dropout in this type of treatment. In this study, we investigated dropout rates in two types of MBT (day hospital MBT [MBT-DH] and intensive outpatient MBT [MBT-IOP]) using data from a recent multicente

BACKGROUND: Body-oriented mentalization based therapy (L-MBT) is used in specialist mental health care for the treatment of patients with somatic symptom disorder or functional neurological disorder. L-MBT focuses on increasing awareness of bodily sensations and integrating them with psychological functions such as thinking, feeling or remembering. The goal of L-MBT is that patients with somatic symptom disorders learn to mentalize their body signals and the associated inner experiences. There are favorable experiences in clinical practice, but to date the mechanism of change and the effective

OBJECTIVES: Mentalization has been primarily investigated in Borderline Personality Disorders. This pilot study takes the first step toward investigating mentalization in depressive patients.
METHODS: First, we present the theoretical background of the concept of mentalization and previous studies. Secondly, we report the results of this pilot study. 20 female inpatients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder were investigated with SKIDI+II, depression-scales (HAM-D, BDI), cognitive tests (TMT, MCVCT), and the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI), rated according to the Reflective Functioning S

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the role of parental emotion regulation (ER) and parental mentalization as possible contributors to hostile and coercive parenting in families of children with ADHD. Method: Seventy-four Israeli families (64 mothers and 48 fathers) seeking parent training for child ADHD completed measures during the intake session. Measures included parental ER; parental mentalization; hostile, coercive, and submissive parenting; and child symptoms. Results: Findings suggested a relationship between parental ER and coercive parenting independent of child age, symp

BACKGROUND: Mentalization, the ability to understand one's own and another's thoughts and feelings, is considered important for couple functioning. Many couple-focused interventions aim to improve mentalization, either as the process through which change occurs or as a central goal of treatment. We aimed to examine (a) associations between mentalization and couple relationship processes and (b) the impact of interventions designed to enhance mentalization in couples.
METHODS: We included studies of adult romantic couples that assessed associations between mentalization and relationship outcom

Knowledge of the long-term consequences of child sexual abuse (CSA) is crucial to further develop preventive strategies and treatment programs. The aim of this study is to investigate attachment and mentalizing ability in people who have experienced CSA. Attachment style, measured with the Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures Questionnaire (ECR-RS), and mentalization, measured with the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ), were examined through a quantitative questionnaire survey in a sample of 49 individuals who had experienced CSA, and a control group of 612 with

This study aimed to first investigate the role that general impairment in mentalization plays in gambling disorder and to analyze the interplay among mentalizing, impulsivity, and time perspective in adolescent gambling. Four hundred and ten late adolescents took part in the study. Participants were administered the South Oaks Gambling Screen Revised for Adolescents (SOGS-RA), the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ-8), the Functional and Dysfunctional Impulsivity Scale (FDIS), and the 14-item Consideration of Future Consequences scale (CFC-14). The results showed that male adolescents a

BACKGROUND: Mentalizing defines the set of social cognitive imaginative activities that enable interpretation of behaviors as arising from intentional mental states. Mentalization impairments have been related to childhood trauma (CT) and are widely present in people suffering from mental disorders. Nevertheless, the link between CT exposure, mentalization abilities, and related psychopathology remains unclear. This study aims to systematically review the evidence in this domain.
METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA)-compliant systematic review

AIMS: The Mentalization Scale (MentS) is a self-report measure for the assessment of mentalizing capacities, consisting of 28 items, yielding a three-factor structure: self-mentalizing, mentalizing others and motivation to mentalize. Its anglophone version has been validated for usage in both research and clinical contexts. The present study explores the psychometric properties of the francophone translation of the MentS, in both control and clinical samples.
METHOD: A total of 711 participants were enrolled in this study. The MentS was administered to a community sample (N = 302, 161 females

Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Borderline Personality Disorder - Concept and Efficacy In recent years, the concept of mentalization has become increasingly important in practice and research. It describes the imaginative ability to understand human behavior in terms of mental states. Mentalization is a central component to understand the etiology and to treat patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Both adult and adolescent patients with BPD have limited mentalization abilities, which can be reliably assessed using the Reflective Functioning Scale. Mentalizatio

Dissociation is a common reaction subsequent to childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and has been identified as a risk factor for child psychopathology. There is also evidence that mentalization contributes to resilience in the context of abuse. However, at this stage little is known regarding the relationship between mentalization and dissociation, and their respective contributions to psychopathology. The aim of this study was to examine pathways from CSA to depressive symptoms, externalizing behaviour difficulties and sexualized behaviour through mentalization and dissociation. These pathways were

Balint groups are a widely used form of reflective practice in medical education that offer clinicians a structured space to examine the emotional and relational dimensions of patient care. A substantial body of evidence suggests that participation can enhance empathy, communication skills, and professional resilience. Traditional Balint formats, however, do not explicitly address two critical areas: (1) cultural humility, recognition of how identity, power, and social context shape clinical encounters; and (2) mentalization, the ability to understand one's own and others' thoughts, feelings,

INTRODUCTION: Shame is a fundamental self-conscious emotion that can disrupt self-narratives and identity coherence. This study explored how mentalization moderates the impact of shameful memories on self-narrative organization.
METHODS: A qualitative design using thematic narrative analysis was employed. Six participants with significant experiences of shame were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured narrative interviews, transcribed, and analyzed using MAXQDA. Trustworthiness was ensured through prolonged engagement.
RESULTS: Findings showed that sham

BACKGROUND: Academic research shows that mentalizing (MZ) and executive function (EF) are important components in maintaining mental health and in responding adaptively to stressors. Therefore, they may be better associated with post-traumatic stress-related mental health problems. However, studies of the relationship between EF, MZ and post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms have mostly focused on childhood traumas and related mental health problems. Few studies have examined the relationship of these variables with trauma types common in adulthood, such as exposure to an earthquake.

IntroductionMentalization is one's ability to understand and predict one's own mental states and those of others. It is an important developmental capacity that fosters emotional and social functioning. Mentalization research in Iran has recently received attention; hence, findings on the development of mentalization in Iranian children are limited. Since mentalization is dependent on context and culture and develops in attachment relationships, identifying these themes in Iranian children was necessary. This study aimed to investigate the attachment-based mentalization themes in middle-aged I

BACKGROUND: Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is an evidence based treatment for patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Although MBT is effective, on average, for individuals with BPD, there are large individual differences in treatment outcomes. Research on predictors of the treatment effect of MBT, such as intelligence, is needed to determine which treatment is most effective for which 'category' of BPD patients, providing more knowledge about optimal indications.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate whether intelligence is associated with MBT outcomes in pati
