We describe a case of craving for menthol sweets in a 53-year-old woman with excessive consumption of menthol sweets (100 units/day). She was admitted with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, anxiety associated with onychophagia and pinching of the skin. Organic disorders were ruled out with paraclinical tests and in-hospital treatment was administered. At discharge, the patient's condition was stable, but because of exacerbated pain due to the rheumatological disease, she presented depressive symptoms, requiring her medication to be adjusted. INTRODUCTION: Menthol is a natural compound, of which the known effects on human physiology are manifold (a feeling of freshness, decongestant, bowel antispasmodic). Its implication in vesico-sphincteral physiopathology has been studied since the nineties.

Menthol is a naturally occurring cyclic terpene alcohol of plant origin, which has been used since antiquity for medicinal purposes. Its use in dermatology is ubiquitous, where it is frequently part of topical antipruritic, antiseptic, analgesic, and cooling formulations. Agonists such as icilin and menthol can activate the cool temperature-sensitive ion channel TRPM8. However, biological responses to menthol may occur independently of TRPM8 activation. In the rodent urinary bladder, menthol facilitates the micturition reflex but inhibits muscarinic contractions of the detrusor smooth muscle. The site(s) of TRPM8 expression in the bladder are controversial. In this study we investigated the regulation of bladder contractility in vitro by menthol. Bladder strips from wild type and TRPM8 knockout male mice (25-30 g) were dissected free and mounted in organ baths.

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between menthol cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence, quit attempts, and physical and mental health.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2007 Florida Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and a follow-up survey among current smokers (N = 3396). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted.
RESULTS: In multivariate analyses, menthol cigarette smoking was associated with women, African American and Hispanic race/ethnicity, and greater mental distress.

A distinct subset of sensory neurons are thought to directly sense changes in thermal energy through their termini in the skin. Very little is known about the molecules that mediate thermoreception by these neurons. Vanilloid Receptor 1 (VR1), a member of the TRP family of channels, is activated by noxious heat. Staphylococcus aureus is a significant human pathogen that is the major cause of a broad spectrum of illnesses, ranging from minor skin infections to life-threatening deep tissue infections and toxinosis. The ability of the organism to cause such a broad range of infections is, to a great extent, attributed to the secretion of a myriad of virulence-related extracellular proteins. Therefore, virulence as a target for antimicrobial chemotherapy has gained great interest. Menthol is a monocyclic terpene alcohol that occurs naturally in plants of the Mentha species lacking anti-S. aureus activity.

The transient receptor potential melastatin member 8 (TRPM8) is a polymodal ion channel that senses cold and menthol in mammals. Despite prior structural studies, the mechanisms by which cold and menthol activate TRPM8 remain unresolved.
